Book excerpt: A “well-written, engaging detective story” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) about a rogue who trades in rare birds and their eggs—and the wildlife detective determined to stop him. On May 3, 2010, an Irish national named Jeffrey Lendrum was apprehended at Britain’s Birmingham International Airport with a suspicious parcel strapped to his stomach. Inside were fourteen rare peregrine falcon eggs snatched from a remote cliffside in Wales. So begins a “vivid tale of obsession and international derring-do” (Publishers Weekly), following the parallel lives of a globe-trotting smuggler who spent two decades capturing endangered raptors worth millions of dollars as race champions—and Detective Andy McWilliam of the United Kingdom’s National Wildlife Crime Unit, who’s hell bent on protecting the world’s birds of prey. “Masterfully constructed” (The New York Times) and “entertaining and illuminating” (The Washington Post), The Falcon Thief will whisk you away from the volcanoes of Patagonia to Zimbabwe’s Matobo National Park, and from the frigid tundra near the Arctic Circle to luxurious aviaries in the deserts of Dubai, all in pursuit of a man who is reckless, arrogant, and gripped by a destructive compulsion to make the most beautiful creatures in nature his own. It’s a story that’s part true-crime narrative, part epic adventure—and wholly unputdownable until the very last page.

Book A Trip of a Lifetime July 5Th July 31St 2008

Download or read book A Trip of a Lifetime July 5Th July 31St 2008 written by Loretta Kier and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-12-01 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story is about a journey of eight thousand miles across the United States. It is a family’s adventures traveling to the national parks in a thirty-seven-foot RV and going on tours by trains, bikes, mules, hikes, and white-water rafting. It is treating you to the journal that Jenny keeps on the trip. They bring the little people along also. They are just three and four inches tall that Jenny and Jimmy found a few years ago in their barn. The first book was The Little People in the Barn. I wrote and told the story of how the little people got to America, how they traveled the United States, how they ended up in a barn in Glenmore, Pennsylvania, and how that is where Jenny and Jimmy found them. This is my second book about the little people. After being a mother, a teacher, and a nurse, I decided to become an author. My five children are raised. I have retired from nursing and now have the time to write these stories. It has always been a dream of mine to share the feeling that the little people have to express. Who are the little people? Are they us? The ones that the government are in control of, but when the little people gather together in unconditional love, there is no greater story. The little people’s village is a mastermind of undisturbed sighting. They rationalize and talk things out. They have great faith in God, and they are not supernatural in any way. They are just like us, and this is what I want to convey. Who are the little people? They might just be you. Can we learn from them? Yes, we can. The journey across the United States was a wonderful family-oriented trip. It brought the little people closer together, and it brought us closer together. We learned about how the Indians feel, their struggle, and we saw the great skywalk of the Grand Canyon. Yes, I have enjoyed my second book.

Book The Arabian Nights Encyclopedia 2 volumes

Download or read book The Arabian Nights Encyclopedia 2 volumes written by Ulrich Marzolph and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2004-08-24 with total page 950 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most comprehensive treatment of the Arabian Nights ever published, with more than 800 detailed encyclopedic entries and a wealth of authoritative essays and resources. The tales of the Arabian Nights have long been the focus of scholarly research and critique, but no English language work has ever attempted an all-embracing treatment of them. The fruit of years of research, The Arabian Nights Encyclopedia is the first comprehensive reference work introducing both the Arabian Nights and the context of their genesis and aftermath in Near Eastern, European, and world culture. Editors Ulrich Marzolph, one of the world's foremost scholars of Near Eastern narrative culture, and Richard van Leeuwen, a prominent scholar of the Arabian Nights, present detailed, authoritative, and up-to-date research on virtually all aspects of the tales, including major protagonists, themes, important translations, textual history, adaptations, reworkings, works inspired by the Arabian Nights, and aspects of literary theory, and provide extensive bibliographies for each tale. In addition to the 800+ encyclopedic entries and numerous essays, the work introduces research that has not previously been published, making it an invaluable resource to scholars, educators, students, and the general public, as well as an essential addition to the core collection of academic and public libraries.

Book The Language of Television

Download or read book The Language of Television written by Albert Hunt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first part of this book assesses how television presents viewers with information - contrasting the ‘official reality’ of news and current affairs programmes with the anarchic view of the world put out by such as Morecambe and Wise and the two Ronnies. It challenges the politics of programme schedules and takes care to consider the language used in programs designed for different purposes. The second, inspiring part contains accounts of three of the author's collaborative video projects which aimed to use the medium of video storytelling to access a different way of teaching. The third and most polemical part of the book explores more about education in relation to television and video. Originally published in 1981, it is a book about the way that television, through massive and constant reinforcement, made its own language the only language; and it presents the attempts – instructive, hilarious, occasionally quite touching – made by the author and students to discover other possible languages that television might use.

Falcon Smoke’s image graces posters all over the city, touting him as the shining new hope for Springhaven. Yet every time Falcon sees those pictures of himself he feels like more of a sham. He tries to lead by example as a good and just Enforcer, but it’s hard to do right within a broken system. The cost of his fame has forced Falcon to leave his family home and move into a small house he can only afford with the help of another young gent by the name of Keene. A handsome and self-confident man, Keene fills their new home with wonderful aromas of his delicious tea blends and the scrumptious meals he makes for his catering clients. Seeing Falcon’s need to lie low, Keene does his best to ensure his housemate feels safe, warm, and protected. Fate, however, is not so kind. The Enforcer order is undergoing reform and many are calling for Falcon to drive their initiatives. Thankfully, Falcon has some much-deserved leave time coming up, and he plans to take full advantage of it by spending time with his handsome housemate. Unfortunately, before they can kick off their vacation, their home is robbed. Knowing that involving the Enforcers means condemning the perpetrators to a lifetime of imprisonment and torture, Falcon and Keene decide to solve the case themselves. While Falcon would prefer to handle this matter alone, Keene refuses to be left out. The two grow closer throughout the investigation, with sparks of romance igniting between them. But when someone notifies the Enforcers of the crime, Falcon is forced to choose where he’ll throw the considerable weight of his support. Fans of cozy mysteries full of sweet romance, witty interactions, and gripping suspense are sure to love Falcon’s Favor by Dana Fraedrich!
