Book excerpt: Few other Hindu gods guide a regional consciousness, pervade walks of everyday life and define a collective psyche the way Lord Jagannath does in Odisha and its contiguous areas. Jagannath is metonymic of Odisha and the Odia way of life, arguably much more than any other god for a particular geography or its peoples. While not derecognising the historical and the spiritual aspects of Jagannath, Bonding with the Lord attempts to look at the deployment of Jagannath in contemporary cultural practices involving the sensorium in the widest sense. The project of a cultural Jagannath not only materialises him in people's everyday practices but also democratises scholarship on him. The expansion of the scope of research on Jagannath to cultural expressions in a more encompassing way rather than confining to 'elitist' religious/literary sources makes him an everyday presence and significantly enhances his sphere of influence. Jagannath's 'tribal' origin, his association with Buddhism and Jainism and his avatari status make him an all-encompassing, multilayered symbol and a treasure trove for multiple interpretations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Rig-Veda, 10.155.3, there is mention of a Daru (log of wood) floating in the ocean. Vedic prayers have indicated for taking shelter in the Daru. In spite of the fact that Acharya Sayana, the noted commentator on the Vedas, has categorically interpreted the hymn with Jagannath as the Daru floating at the sea shores, some scholars have refuted this interpretation under the argument that the hymn deals with âAlaxmi Stavaâ of Arayi.

Book Jagannatha in Historical Perspectives

Download or read book Jagannatha in Historical Perspectives written by Rabinārāẏaṇa Dāśa and published by . This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through different phases of history, Jagannatha culture has attracted not only the pilgrims and the believers, but also has been a focal point of research in terms of historical antecedents, processes and cultural ramifications. Eclectic as well as syncretistic by nature, the Jagannath culture cannot be understood in terms of one single cult. This has been emphasized in the present monograph in various papers written by scholars of history, archaeology, anthropology and Sanskrit literature etc. Critical use of different kinds of sources - archaeological, epigraphic, literary and archival - is an important aspect of this volume. Emphasis has been put on the influence of Vaishnavite, Saivite, Jaina and Buddhist traditions in the making ofJagannatha culture. Besides, issues relating to other shrines in Jagannath temple complex, management of the temple in different periods, and various rituals followed are also discussed. An account of various Jagannatha temples in West Bengal and importance ofJagannatha among Assamese Hindus imply the pan-Indian network of the Jagannatha culture. Thus, this volume tries to incorporate multiple historical perspectives associated with the Jagannatha culture.
