These investigations were pursued by all available scientific methods. Among these, the X-ray diffraction method provided a powerful tool for phase identification and structure determination, which greatly assisted in the solution of the metallurgical and chemical problems. Isostructural compounds with the composition U6M (where M = Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni) have been found and the structure determined. Single crystals, examined by the rotation, oscillation, Laue, and Weissenberg methods, exhibited the diffraction of D4h - 4/mmm.

Book excerpt: The compounds CeB4, ThB4, and UB4 have been shown to crystallize in a new structure, which has been worked out from x-ray diffraction patterns. This structure is designated as the "ThB4-type structure," since that was the compound first observed. These borides were prepared by D.L. Sawyer and L. Brewer of the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, who heated the metals and boron together in vacuum at about 1500© C. Powder diffraction patterns were obtained of the three compounds. Rotation and Weissenberg patterns were obtained for 110 and 001 axes of a small single crystal of ThB4. The patterns were indexed on tetragonal lattices.

The hydrides ThH{sub 2}, ThD{sub 2} and ZrD{sub 2} have been studied by neutron diffraction in order that hydrogen positions could be determined. The hydrides are isomorphous, and have a deformed fluorite structure. Metal-hydrogen distances in thorium hydride are unusually large, as in UH{sub 3}. Thorium and zirconium scattering amplitudes and a revised scattering amplitude for deuterium are reported.
