Book excerpt: Errol Flynn set the standard for the modern action hero in films like The Adventures of Robin Hood, Dodge City, and The Sea Hawk. This biography follows Flynn from his birth in Tasmania, Australia, in 1909, to his death in Vancouver, Canada, in 1959. Included is analysis of his films, discussion of the 1943 rape trial that changed his life, a survey of the FBI's infamous surveillance, and the first detailed account of his television appearances in the 1950s. First-hand interviews with Flynn's friends and colleagues are complemented by research from FBI files, correspondence, Flynn's diary, and other sources. Illustrated with rare and previously unpublished photographs, the study also gives attention to the historical backgrounds and cultural influences that contributed to Flynn's fame; the work takes an objective and analytical look at the actor's adventurous life. The study includes two appendices: the first is a collection of quotations from various celebrities, from memories of his talent and style to anecdotes about his wild pool parties. The second appendix is a filmography including all Flynn's work for film, stage, and television, with cast and crew information.

Book Hollywood s Hellfire Club

Download or read book Hollywood s Hellfire Club written by Gregory William Mank and published by Feral House. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They made fans go crazy and censors apoplectic, spent fortunes faster than they made them, forged Rembrandts and hung them in major museums, went on trial for committing statutory rape with necrophiliac teenage girls, reinterpreted Hamlet as an incestuous mama's boy,and swilled immeasurable quantities of spirits during week-long parties on wobbly yachts. They were "The Bundy Drive Boys," and they made the Rat Pack look like Cub Scouts. Their self-destructiveness was spectacular, the misanthropy profound, but behind the boozy bravado was a devoted mutual affection. The Bundy Drive Boys' un-bowdlerized stories have never been illustrated so well or told so completely as within Hollywood's Hellfire Club. Author Gregory William Mank also wrote It's Alive!: The Classic Cinema Saga of Frankenstein and Hollywood Cauldron.

Book The Loss of the Schooner KESTREL

Download or read book The Loss of the Schooner KESTREL written by Richard Dey and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-03-19 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Loss of the Schooner Kestrel & Other Poems is a contemporary book of sea poetry based on recreational boating and commercial fishing. The boats in Dey’s poems are many and varied, and he writes about them in both literal and figurative ways. He regards yachts not as images of conspicuous consumption but as vehicles of trial and transport, and in this he is revolutionary. He sees them in the continuum of ships. The title poem is a narrative about the predicament of a modern sailor in a traditional battle against an ageless sea.

Book The Pirate s Daughter

    Book Details:
  • Author : Margaret Cezair-Thompson
  • Publisher : Unbridled Books
  • Release : 2007-10-01
  • ISBN : 1936071290

Download or read book The Pirate s Daughter written by Margaret Cezair-Thompson and published by Unbridled Books. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Back in America, little was known of my life in Jamaica,” wrote Errol Flynn. In 1946, a storm-wrecked boat carrying Hollywood’s most famous swashbuckler shored up on the coast of Jamaica, and the glamorous world of 1940’s Hollywood converged with that of a small West Indian society. After a long and storied career on the silver screen, Errol Flynn spent much of the last years of his life on a small island off of Jamaica, throwing parties and sleeping with increasingly younger teenaged girls. Based on those years, The Pirate’s Daughter is the story of Ida, a local girl who has an affair with Flynn that produces a daughter, May, who meets her father but once. Spanning two generations of women whose destinies become inextricably linked with the matinee idol’s, this lively novel tells the provocative history of a vanished era, of uncommon kinships, compelling attachments, betrayal and atonement in a paradisal, tropical setting. As adept with Jamaican vernacular as she is at revealing the internal machinations of a fading and bloated matinee idol, Margaret Cezair-Thompson weaves a saga of a mother and daughter finding their way in a nation struggling to rise to the challenge of independence.

Book Errol Flynn

Download or read book Errol Flynn written by Robert Florczak and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-02-28 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though there have been myriad books on Errol Flynn - scores of biographies, film studies, analyses, etc. - there has never been one that unfurls his dashing life day-by-day, predominantly through photos, letters, news clippings, and documents. This book does so: from Flynn’s birth in Hobart, Australia in 1909 through to his death in Vancouver, Canada in 1959, with over 1,000 images (many rarely or never before published) culled from Florczak's personal collection of over 11,000. The book is the result of the author’s travels around the world to photograph locations key to Flynn’s life, and with text gathered from years of research in the Warner Bros. Archives, the USC Cinematic Arts Library, and the Margaret Herrick Library. Among other popular day-by-day pictorial biographies are those of Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland, Ernest Hemingway, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and Eric Clapton. Flynn’s colorful life was lived out on the world stage and a better candidate for a book of this style would be hard to find.

Book Raised by the Stars

Download or read book Raised by the Stars written by Nick Thomas and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2011-10-14 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of interviews, all conducted by the author, focuses on the children of Hollywood legends. Each child (and, in one case, grandchild) talks about the joys and difficulties of growing up in the shadow of the Hollywood spotlight. While some were significantly influenced by their famous parents and chose a career in entertainment, others felt no attraction toward the glamour of Tinseltown fame. Among the interviewees are the offspring of such major stars as Errol Flynn, Gary Cooper, Ingrid Bergman, Jimmy Stewart and Rosalind Russell, as well as such prominent supporting players as Jack Elam, Gene Lockhart, Billy Barty and Jesse White. The collection also includes a list of books and/or websites published by the children of the actors featured.

Book Vitaphone Films

Download or read book Vitaphone Films written by Roy Liebman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-05-20 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The headline of the Variety extra on October 27, 1926, proclaimed "Vitaphone1 Thrills L.A.!" Vitaphone, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. formed in association with Western Electric, was one of the major producers of talkies, even though its sound-on-disc technology barely lasted four years. The Vitaphone features and shorts that have survived intact, or that have been so carefully restored, preserve much of the show business history that might otherwise have been lost with the industry's fast-paced advances in movie making. This book is a catalogue of Vitaphone features and shorts. The first section lists the features and shorts by release number. The New York productions (1926-1940) are listed first, followed by the West Coast productions (1927-1970). For shorts, the following particulars, if known and if applicable, are given: title, alternate title(s), instrumental and vocal selections performed on screen, composer(s) and performers of instrumental and vocal selections, release date and synopsis of the film, names of major cast members and directors, set information if two or fewer sets were used, and the amount paid to early performers. For features, entries list release dates, genre, and major cast members. The section on performers includes only those who appeared in shorts, listing dates and places of birth when known.

Book Disaster and Memory

Download or read book Disaster and Memory written by Wheeler W. Dixon and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the media's coverage of the death of Princess Diana as a starting point, the author draws on the effects of new technologies, the role of the star system, the nature of public surveillance, and the development of media conglomerates to explain why Hollywood has become so repetitive. Discussing films such as Titanic the author argues that current films replay the same plotlines with greater wizardry and less humanity than those of fifty years ago and that our culture is fascinated with images of disaster.

Book Encyclopedia of American Short Films 1926 1959

Download or read book Encyclopedia of American Short Films 1926 1959 written by Graham Webb and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-07-13 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short subject films have a long history in American cinemas. These could be anywhere from 2 to 40 minutes long and were used as a "filler" in a picture show that would include a cartoon, a newsreel, possibly a serial and a short before launching into the feature film. Shorts could tackle any topic of interest: an unusual travelogue, a comedy, musical revues, sports, nature or popular vaudeville acts. With the advent of sound-on-film in the mid-to-late 1920s, makers of earlier silent short subjects began experimenting with the short films, using them as a testing ground for the use of sound in feature movies. After the Second World War, and the rising popularity of television, short subject films became far too expensive to produce and they had mostly disappeared from the screens by the late 1950s. This encyclopedia offers comprehensive listings of American short subject films from the 1920s through the 1950s.
