Book The Battlecruiser New Zealand

Download or read book The Battlecruiser New Zealand written by Matthew Wright and published by Seaforth Publishing. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of HMS New Zealand, a battlecruiser paid for by the government of New Zealand at the height of its pro-Imperial ‘jingo’ era in 1909, when Britain’s ally Japan was perceived as a threat in Australasia and the Pacific. Born of the collision between New Zealand’s patriotic dreams and European politics, the tale of HMS New Zealand is further wrapped in the turbulent power-plays at the Admiralty in the years leading up to the First World War. The ship went on to have a distinguished First World War career, when she was present in all three major naval battles – Heligoland, Dogger Bank and Jutland – in the North Sea. The book ‘busts’ many of the myths associated with the ship and her construction, including the intent of the gift, New Zealand’s ability to pay, deployment, and the story behind the piupiu (skirt) and tiki (pendant) that, the crew believed, bestowed special protection upon the vessel. All is inter-woven with the human and social context to create a ‘biography’ of the ship as an expression of human endeavour, in significantly more detail than any of the summaries available in prior accounts. Extensively illustrated, this is a book with appeal to a wide audience, from naval enthusiasts and historians to the general reader with a wider interest in the story of Empire. The use of archival material available only in New Zealand, including the Ship’s Book, adds a dimension and novelty not previously included in histories of this great battlecruiser.

Book The Compleat Guide to HMS New Zealand

Download or read book The Compleat Guide to HMS New Zealand written by Fred Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is a tale of two ships (and there was nearly a third) called HMS New Zealand in the Royal Navy, shortly after the turn of the 20th century. It is a complex story, as is any chronicle where the Admiralty and British interests are involved, and never more so than in the jingoistic early Edwardian years. This book lays out the full details surrounding these two ships, their connections with each other and their connections with the country after which they were named. Its aim is to bring together in a single volume, all the information that hitherto has been in small books, and, by the use of comprehensive research, to add significantly to, or correct, the tales already told."--Page 1.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Hilliard's God's Gentlemen, originally published in 1978, remains the only detached and detailed historical analysis of the work of the Melanesian Mission. Starting with its New Zealand beginnings and its Norfolk Island years (1867-1920), the work follows the Mission's shift of headquarters to the Solomon Islands and on until the beginning of the Second World War. The Mission, which grew out of the personal vision of the first Church of England Bishop of New Zealand, George Selwyn, formally defined its field of work as 'the Islands of Melanesia' although its activities were confined almost entirely to the island groups that now make up Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands. The Diocese of Melanesia was a fully constituent diocese of the Anglican Church of New Zealand from its formation in 1861 until the creation of the autonomous Church of the Province of Melanesia in 1975. Based on a wide range of sources, God's Gentleman is the inner history of the slow growth of an important and genuinely Melanesian church.
