Book Moving Loads on Ice Plates

Download or read book Moving Loads on Ice Plates written by V.A. Squire and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moving Loads on Ice Plates is a unique study into the effect of vehicles and aircraft travelling across floating ice sheets. It synthesizes in a single volume, with a coherent theme and nomenclature, the diverse literature on the topic, hitherto available only as research journal articles. Chapters on the nature of fresh water ice and sea ice, and on applied continuum mechanics are included, as is a chapter on the subject's venerable history in related areas of engineering and science. The most recent theories and data are discussed in great depth, demonstrating the advanced state of the modelling and experimental field programmes that have taken place. Finally, results are interpreted in the context of engineering questions faced by agencies operating in the polar and subpolar regions. Although the book necessarily contains some graduate level applied mathematics, it is written to allow engineers, physicists and mathematicians to extract the information they need without becoming preoccupied with details. Structural, environmental, civil, and offshore engineers, and groups who support these industries, particularly within the Arctic and Antarctic, will find the book timely and relevant.

Book Ice and Construction

Download or read book Ice and Construction written by L. Makkonen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2004-03-01 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on two areas of ice technology: the use of ice as a construction material and the problems caused by ice to constructions. In connection with describing past and potential future applications of using ice in construction, a detailed discussion on the mechanical properties of ice is given. A state of the art description on ice-making methods, melt protection, methods and reinforcement of ice with the materials are covered.

Book Mathematical Techniques for Wave Interaction with Flexible Structures

Download or read book Mathematical Techniques for Wave Interaction with Flexible Structures written by Trilochan Sahoo and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-10-24 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical Techniques for Wave Interaction with Flexible Structures is a thoughtful compilation of the various mathematical techniques used to deal with wave structure interaction problems. The book emphasizes unique determination of the solution for a class of physical problems associated with Laplace- or Helmholtz-type equations satisfying higher order boundary conditions with the applications of the theory of ordinary and partial differential equations, Fourier analysis, and more. Features: Provides a focused mathematical treatment for gravity wave interaction with floating and submerged flexible structures Highlights solution methods for a special class of boundary value problems in wave structure interaction Introduces and expands upon differential equations and the fundamentals of wave structure interaction problems This is an ideal handbook for naval architects, ocean engineers, and geophysicists dealing with the design of floating and/or flexible marine structures. The book’s underlying mathematical tools can be easily extended to deal with physical problems in the area of acoustics, electromagnetic waves, wave propagation in elastic media, and solid‐state physics. Designed for both the classroom and independent study, Mathematical Techniques for Wave Interaction with Flexible Structures enables readers to appreciate and apply the mathematical tools of wave structure interaction research to their own work.

Book Moving Loads on a Floating Ice Sheet

Download or read book Moving Loads on a Floating Ice Sheet written by D. E. Nevel and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper considers a load moving with a constant velocity across an ice sheet that is floating on water. The ice sheet is assumed to be an isotropic, elastic, thin plate extending to infinity. The water is assumed to be inviscous, incompressible, and of a constant depth. The dynamic equations describing this ice-water system are solved for the steady state solution. Both a concentrated load and a uniform load distributed over a circular area are considered. The velocity which causes resonance is determined. The deflection and stress directly under the load are numerically evaluated.
