Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cricket on the Hearth: Fairy Tale of Home The third of Charles Dickens's Christmas Books was, and is, by many considered his best, the introduction of the Cricket being in every way so happy and the various characters so well defined. Gruff and Tackleton, the Peerybingles, Caleb Plummer and his Blind Daughter, Tilly Slowboy - all are in the best Dickensian tradition. The title came through Dickens's predilection for journalism as a profession. He had, in early years of struggle, been a journalist of the mechanical order. Why not, in the days of success, be a journalist of the publicist and really influential type? Hence the idea which ultimately culminated in the foundation of the Daily News was often in his mind, and we find him writing to Forster at the beginning of 1845 suggesting the possibility of a weekly newspaper given over to reviews of books, theatrical criticism, "notices of all good things, notices of all bad ones, 'Carol' philosophy, cheerful views, sharp anatomisation of humbug, jolly good temper...becoming reference in everything to Home and Fireside. And I would call it, sir, 'The Cricket.'" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dickens gave his first formal expression to his Christmas thoughts in his series of small books, the first of which was the famous "Christmas Carol." There followed four others: "The Chimes," "The Cricket on the Hearth," "The Battle of Life," and "The Haunted Man." The five are known today as the "Christmas Books." Of them all the "Carol" is the best known and loved, and "The Cricket on the Hearth," although third in the series, is perhaps next in popularity, and is especially familiar to Americans through Joseph Jefferson's characterisation of Caleb Plummer. The title creature is a sort of barometer of life at the home of John Peerybingle and his much younger wife Dot. When things go well, the cricket on the hearth chirps; it is silent when there is sorrow. Tackleton, a jealous old man, poisons John's mind about Dot, but the cricket through its supernatural powers restores John's confidence and all ends happily

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The kettle began it! Don’t tell me what Mrs. Peerybingle said. I know better. Mrs. Peerybingle may leave it on record to the end of time that she couldn’t say which of them began it; but, I say the kettle did. I ought to know, I hope! The kettle began it, full five minutes by the little waxy-faced Dutch clock in the corner, before the Cricket uttered a chirp. As if the clock hadn’t finished striking, and the convulsive little Haymaker at the top of it, jerking away right and left with a scythe in front of a Moorish Palace, hadn’t mowed down half an acre of imaginary grass before the Cricket joined in at all! Why, I am not naturally positive. Every one knows that. I wouldn’t set my own opinion against the opinion of Mrs. Peerybingle, unless I were quite sure, on any account whatever. Nothing should induce me. But, this is a question of fact. And the fact is, that the kettle began it, at least five minutes before the Cricket gave any sign of being in existence. Contradict me, and I’ll say ten.
