Book The Creationist Debate Second Edition

Download or read book The Creationist Debate Second Edition written by Arthur McCalla and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whereas scholarly study of Creationism usually places it in the context of religion and the history or philosophy of science, The Creationist Debate, here revised and completely updated in its second edition, has been written in the conviction that creationism is ultimately about the status of the Bible in the modern world. Creationism as a modern ideology exists in order to defend the authority of the Bible as a repository of transhistorical truth from the challenges of any and all historical sciences. It belongs to and is inseparable from Protestant Fundamentalists' desire to resubject the modern world to the authority of the inerrant Bible. Intelligent Design creationism, to the extent that it distinguishes itself from reactionary biblicism, is a program advocating a supernaturalist, providentialist understanding of the world. Accordingly, The Creationist Debate situates Creationism and Intelligent Design in relation to the rise, from the early modern period onwards, of historical thinking in various scientific and scholarly disciplines (including theories of the earth, chronology, civil history, geology, biblical criticism, paleontology, evolutionary biology, and anthropology) in their complex relationship to the status of the Bible as an historical authority. It argues that the debate over Creationism is at bottom a debate over how to interpret the biblical text rather than over how to interpret the world.

Book excerpt: This book places the present Creationist opposition to the theory of evolution in historical context by setting out the ways in which, from the seventeenth century onwards, investigations of the history of the earth and of humanity have challenged the biblical views of chronology and human destiny, and the Christian responses to these challenges. The author's interest is not primarily directed to questions such as the epistemological status of scientific versus religious knowledge or the possibility of a Darwinian ethics, but rather to the problems, and various responses to the problems, raised in a particular historical period in the West for the Bible by the massive extension of the duration of geological time and human history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As early as the Warring States period in China (fourth through third centuries B.C.), debates arose concerning how and under what circumstances new institutions could be formed and legitimated. But the debates quickly encompassed more than just legitimation. Larger issues came to the fore: Can a sage innovate? If so, under what conditions? Where did human culture originally come from? Was it created by human sages? Is it therefore an artificial fabrication, or was it based in part on natural patterns? Is it possible for new sages to emerge who could create something better? This book studies these debates from the Warring States period to the early Han (second century b.c.), analyzing the texts in detail and tracing the historical consequences of the various positions that emerged. It also examines the time's conflicting narratives about the origin of the state and how these narratives and ideas were manipulated for ideological purposes during the formation of the first empires. While tracing debates over the question of innovation in early China, the author engages such questions as the prevailing notions concerning artifice and creation. This is of special importance because early China is often described as a civilization that assumed continuity between nature and culture, and hence had no notion of culture as a fabrication, no notion that the sages did anything other than imitate the natural world. The author concludes that such views were not assumptions at all. The ideas that human culture is merely part of the natural world, and that true sages never created anything but instead replicated natural patterns arose at a certain moment, then came to prominence only at the end of a lengthy debate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution versus creationism conflict is here to stay. Even after their devastating defeat in the Kitzmiller v. Dover decision, advocates of intelligent design and other forms of creationism continue to revise their strategies for undermining the teaching of evolution-and thus of science in general-in American schools. In this revision of Evolution vs. Creationism, Eugenie Scott, one of the leading proponents of teaching evolution in the schools, describes these ever-changing efforts to undermine science education and shows what students, parents, and teachers should be aware of to help ensure that American science education prepares our students to compete in the 21st century. This second edition of Evolution vs. Creationism will help readers better understand the issues involved in these debates. It expands and updates the original work with an insider's look at the Kitzmiller v. Dover trial, a new selection of primary source documents on the Creationism/Evolution controversy in the media, and an up-to-date analysis of the most recent creationist challenges across the country. The revision also expands and updates the collection of primary source documents that address cosmology, law, education, popular culture, and religious issues from all sides of the debate, as well as the resources for further information.

Book The Great Creation Debate

Download or read book The Great Creation Debate written by Brad Freckleton and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why isn't the evolution of flight shown in the fossil record? Bugs, birds, bats and dinosaurs flew and are shown fully formed in the fossil record, but there are no animals with halfway wings in the fossil record leading from ground based animals to flying animals. What is desperately wrong with the Grand Canyon if evolution is true? Where are the massive signs of erosion between the sedimentary layers of the Grand Canyon if they were laid down a "million years" at a time? Why does massive erosion only show up at the top? Animals with well-developed eyes show up suddenly in the fossil record as do flying animals. It's the norm for plants and animals to show up in the fossil record with the same separations as we see in different types of living animals and plants today. The "second law of thermodynamics" is a law of science that says everything left to its own will wear out, run down. It is a fundamental law of science. So how did evolution accidentally go up? How could a DNA molecule fumble together? The cell needs DNA; DNA needs the cell ñ which came first? 'Beneficial' mutations also weaken in other areas, and don't write evolutionary advancing DNA code. Spiral galaxies (which have the shape of a star fish that is spinning quickly) throughout our universe, like our Milky Way galaxy, are supposed to be over 10 billion years old. If they were over a billion years old they would lose their spiral arm shape. The arms of our galaxy, the Milky Way, only show a maximum age of 0.3 billion years. People want to know why they're here now and where they're going to go. They want surety of truth also. Read this book and see how well evolution holds up in all the sciences. Read this book and see if life can have meaning, direction and hope ñ with surety. For those who claim to be open minded, put on your seatbelts and keep your arms inside as you ride the roller coaster of your own value systems!

Book Recruiting the Ancients for the Creation Debate

Download or read book Recruiting the Ancients for the Creation Debate written by Andrew J. Brown and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2023-10-05 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A careful and unbiased analysis of how thinkers from church history interpreted the creation narrative in Genesis How literally are we meant to take the creation week of Genesis 1? In this polarizing debate, contemporary interpreters invoke great theologians from history to support their own side, whether that be a young Earth or theistic evolution. The problem lies in trying to force ancient authors into contemporary boxes, as Andrew J. Brown shows in this thought-provoking volume. Covering Philo, Basil, Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Wesley, and more, Brown carefully interprets great thinkers’ readings of Genesis 1 in their intellectual contexts. He then assesses how these authors have been subject to cherry-picking and misappropriation in the trenches of the modern creation debate. By studying the intellectual history of the church in this way—to revisit rather than recruit the ancients—we can enrich our own biblical interpretation. Irenic and magisterial, Brown’s guide will interest both scholars of historical theology and anyone invested in the creation debate.

Book Three Views on Creation and Evolution

Download or read book Three Views on Creation and Evolution written by Zondervan, and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Christians, the issues raised by the different views on creation and evolution are challenging. Can a "young earth" be reconciled with a universe that appears to be billions of years old? Does scientific evidence point to a God who designed the universe and life in all its complexity? Three Views on Creation and Evolution deals with these and similar concerns as it looks at three dominant schools of Christian thought. Proponents of young earth creationism, old earth creationism, and theistic evolution each present their different views, tell why the controversy is important, and describe the interplay between their understandings of science and theology. Each view is critiqued by various scholars, and the entire discussion is summarized by Phillip E. Johnson and Richard H. Bube. The Counterpoints series provides a forum for comparison and critique of different views on issues important to Christians. Counterpoints books address two categories: Church Life and Bible and Theology. Complete your library with other books in the Counterpoints series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stunning revision of our founding document’s evolving history that forces us to confront anew the question that animated the founders so long ago: What is our Constitution? Americans widely believe that the United States Constitution was created when it was drafted in 1787 and ratified in 1788. But in a shrewd rereading of the Founding era, Jonathan Gienapp upends this long-held assumption, recovering the unknown story of American constitutional creation in the decade after its adoption—a story with explosive implications for current debates over constitutional originalism and interpretation. When the Constitution first appeared, it was shrouded in uncertainty. Not only was its meaning unclear, but so too was its essential nature. Was the American Constitution a written text, or something else? Was it a legal text? Was it finished or unfinished? What rules would guide its interpretation? Who would adjudicate competing readings? As political leaders put the Constitution to work, none of these questions had answers. Through vigorous debates they confronted the document’s uncertainty, and—over time—how these leaders imagined the Constitution radically changed. They had begun trying to fix, or resolve, an imperfect document, but they ended up fixing, or cementing, a very particular notion of the Constitution as a distinctively textual and historical artifact circumscribed in space and time. This means that some of the Constitution’s most definitive characteristics, ones which are often treated as innate, were only added later and were thus contingent and optional.

Download or read book Evolution or Creation written by Albert J. DeBenedictis and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-08-26 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered how the universe originated or whether the universe always existed? Have you ever wondered how life began on earth? Have you ever heard others discuss origins but felt unable to contribute to the conversation? Would you like to defend your views but feel unequipped or inadequate to do so? Are you unsure about what to believe? Would you like to learn more about the subject of origins? If so, this book will be a help to you. The subject of evolution and creation often causes much contention and controversy. The question that may be asked is, Why is there so much tension and animosity between those who hold to opposing views regarding the subject of origins? Others may ask, What do those of opposing views base their beliefs upon? Is there any reconciling of the different views? The differences, I believe, in part are due to ones perceptions regarding science and theology. This book is not about Christians versus atheists. This book is more about creation versus evolution than about Creationism versus Evolutionism. This book is about comparing various views, opinions and evidence related to evolution and creation. Some of the information being presented may be new to you and may take some time to digest. Evolutionists generally view creation in the same way that creationists generally view evolution. Opposing views are rarely taken seriously, as they are a contradiction to ones own bias. Whatever your current views are regarding the origins of the universe and life or level of knowledge of origins, this book is about considering various sides of the issue of evolution. In this book we will be comparing the evidence and arguments and then weighing the pros and cons in an attempt to determine the validity of each view. You will, however, be left to make your own decisions about each subject that is presented. This book may either strengthen your current views of origins or may cause you to re-think what you currently believe about origins. Whatever your views are regarding the origins of the universe and life, this book is about considering various sides of the issue of evolution. In this book the evidence and arguments will be presented for the reader to determine the validity of each view. Subjects such as: the origin of the universe, the age of the universe, the fossil evidence, the possibilities of a global flood, the origins of life, Stanley Millers Experiment of 1953, the fossils in the strata of the earth, the components of evolution (Natural Selection, Adaptation, Mutations, Speciation, and Genetic Drift), Punctuated Equilibrium, Haeckels Embryos and Recapitulation, Vestiges, Pseudogenes, Biological Complexity and Intelligent Design, Comparing biological similarities and differences between Chimpanzee and human genome, Comparing the Human and Ape Fossil Evidence, will be examined. Multiple top resources of various professions have been included in this book to provide information on the many different subjects discussed. Although this book is an in-depth study of evolution, it was written on the level so that the average teenager or adult will be able to understand what is being presented. Difficult words and terms are explained so that you will not need to consult a dictionary every time an unknown word or term appears. I attempted to present the subject matter on a level that most people will be able to easily understand. The various views and arguments are presented in a manner similar to having a debate. The aim of this book is to help either strengthen your current views of origins or cause you to re-think what you currently believe. It is hoped that at least you will develop a better appreciation for the opposing views and will better understand why those who believe in the opposing views believe as they do. I sincerely hope that this book will be beneficial to you whether you are se
