What reviewers say about the Three Worlds books “A compelling adventure in a landscape full of wonders.” – Locus “A page-turner of the highest order … Formidable!” – SFX on Geomancer “It is the most engrossing book I’ve read in years.” – Van Ikin, Sydney Morning Herald “Readers of Eddings, Goodkind and Jordan will lap this one up.” – Starlog “Utterly absorbing.” Stephen Davenport, Independent Weekly “For sheer excitement, there’s just no one like Irvine.” SFX on The Destiny of the Dead “As good as anything I have read in the fantasy genre.” – Adelaide Advertiser More reviews "In a world full of epic fantasy clones, this stands out as a world-building labour of love with some truly original touches." – Locus on A Shadow on the Glass “Hugely ambitious – an epic, tragic tale of history’s implacable impact on the present, full of driven, often unlikeable and inept characters, and betrayal. Interest and originality there is aplenty – and action.” – Starburst, UK, on The View from the Mirror quartet. “A page-turner of the highest order … Arguably the most inventive fantasy author to emerge in recent years, Irvine can now consider himself comfortably ranked next to the works of Robert Jordan and David Eddings and, more appropriately, the mighty Anne McCaffrey. Formidable!” – SFX on Geomancer. ‘It is the most engrossing book I’ve read in years, the lucid prose unfolding an action-and-suspense storyline featuring wonderfully credible characters.’ – Van Ikin, Sydney Morning Herald on Scrutator. “Hang on with both hands, because this story waits for no one.” Sandy Auden, SFX on The Fate of the Fallen. “The final payoff is fantastic. The most unflaggingly inventive storyteller we’ve seen in years.” Sydney Morning Herald on The Destiny of the Dead ‘Unbelievably, Irvine has managed to increase the pace of his story in this third and final volume – for sheer excitement, there’s just no one like Irvine around at the moment.’ SFX on The Destiny of the Dead. ‘This precise and beautifully crafted novel blooms from its ascetic opening to a resonant and rewarding climax. Makes what’s currently available on fantasy shelves seem hackneyed and formulaic. Utterly absorbing.” Stephen Davenport, Independent Weekly on The Destiny of the Dead.

Book The Magic of Yggdrasill

Download or read book The Magic of Yggdrasill written by Yves Kodratoff and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2020 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book took its start with the author’s realization that what Old Norse calls 'magic' can be understood as 'unconscious', as stated by C. G. Jung: (we find) "magical means everything where unconscious influences are at work." This book reveals the existence of several Norse words specifically dedicated to magic, as are 'sköp', for instance, and it details the magic they carry with them. In our modern civilization these "skop" still exist but their magical nature is no longer obvious, though this point can be disputed. Once this magic is discovered and acknowledged, it becomes possible to infer from Norse poetry the existence and handling of unconscious archetypes within its associated myths. A few of them have been analyzed in detail and this enabled us to better understand some surprising traits of this mythology... up to detecting 'magical spells' imbedded within Norse poetry (they are usually dubbed as 'Galdralag"). The book ends by sending to the readers a positive of such 'spells' by which "Odinn" self-increased his thoughts and deeds, as given in Havamal. The book aims at four logically connected targets: 1) spotting Poetic Edda stanzas using a vocabulary calling upon magic for improving our knowledge of ancient Norse magic, 2) checking that no convincing proof of "Christian influences" on Poetic Edda had been provided by the academic community, 3) spotting a few images of Old Norse unconscious archetypes, and 4) finding a few typical instances of the Eddaic meter called Galdralag ("incantation meter").

Book excerpt: When Odin breathed life into the mortal realms, he also created the Cardinal Wizards: the Northern Wizard as the representative of Good, the Southern as master of Evil, and the Western and Eastern as the keepers of the balance between Good and Evil, each neutral, both sharing the burden of holding their fellow magic wielders in check. But now the days decreed in ancient prophecy have come upon the mortal realms. The Great War has been fought and a Renshai has proven its Champion. Yet even as the war's heroes struggle to place the rightful king of Bearn upon his throne, and the also true Renshai seeks to train a new generation of his warrior race, the word is carried forth on falcon's wings that the Western Wizard is no more. And unless Shadimar, the Wizard of the East, can find the one mortal with any hope of surviving the challenge of the Seven Tasks of Wizardry, the worlds of gods and mortals alike will fall....

Book The Shadow of the Sun

Download or read book The Shadow of the Sun written by Ryszard Kapuscinski and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2001-07-05 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1957, Ryszard Kapuscinski arrived in Africa to witness the beginning of the end of colonial rule as the first African correspondent of Poland's state newspaper. From the early days of independence in Ghana to the ongoing ethnic genocide in Rwanda, Kapuscinski has crisscrossed vast distances pursuing the swift, and often violent, events that followed liberation. Kapuscinski hitchhikes with caravans, wanders the Sahara with nomads, and lives in the poverty-stricken slums of Nigeria. He wrestles a king cobra to the death and suffers through a bout of malaria. What emerges is an extraordinary depiction of Africa--not as a group of nations or geographic locations--but as a vibrant and frequently joyous montage of peoples, cultures, and encounters. Kapuscinski's trenchant observations, wry analysis and overwhelming humanity paint a remarkable portrait of the continent and its people. His unorthodox approach and profound respect for the people he meets challenge conventional understandings of the modern problems faced by Africa at the dawn of the twenty-first century.
