Book excerpt: ❤ A bride in trouble, a doubting cowboy ❤ ** USA TODAY BESTSELLER ** “Are you sure, baby?” The worried father of the bride-to-be asks when he sees the turmoil on his daughter’s face. Just before she’s supposed to walk down the aisle, Judi Monroe overhears a conversation that indicates marrying this groom might be an epic mistake. Fleeing the groom and wedding, she drives west, covering her tracks as she goes. In an isolated corner of Wyoming, she swerves to avoid hitting a horse and rider – the Lone Ranger? she fleetingly wonders -- and drives into a tree. She’s rescued from the wreck by the rider, a rugged rancher named Thomas Vance. Judi needs a place she won’t be found and time to puzzle out the predicament awaiting her back in Illinois. But thinking straight is no easy task around this doubting Thomas, a man with a strong jaw, remarkable green eyes, a commanding presence, and a lot of suspicions. While Judi evades his personal questions, Thomas dismisses his half-sister Becky's diagnosis of amnesia. But to his surprise, his beloved grandmother backs Becky on amnesia and that Judi must be the caretaker they expected to help Gran post-surgery. Judi seizes on this foot in the door, gladly caring for Gran. Judi finds a family on the Diamond V, even as her masquerade as a home health aide slowly unravels. If she reveals her secrets will Thomas bolt from her life? Thomas knows in his bones that this impostor is lying, another outsider betraying his family. But even predicting disaster, can he stop himself from giving this sexy, independent, smart woman his heart? Book excerpt: Laying the foundations for Clint Eastwood’s nameless character in ‘The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly,’ ‘The Virginian’ is a landmark novel of the western genre. The eponymous hero is the strong, tall, silent type, acting as an armed escort to Tenderfoot on their journey to Judge Henry’s ranch in Sunk Creek. This action-packed story details their adventures and encounters along the way and includes, just as in any good western, a little romance. If you like your books full of hot bullets and cold killers, then this is the perfect place to start! Credited with setting the template for the classic western novel and the archetypal cowboy hero, Owen Wister (1860 – 1938) was born in Philadelphia. The son of an actress and a doctor, Wister spent his formative years travelling Europe, before returning to America at his father’s behest. After graduating from Harvard Law School, and suffering from poor mental health, he took the first of 15 trips to Wyoming. It was here that he was inspired to write notes and journals about the characters living in the beautiful wilderness. These notes were to serve as the basis for many of his books. His most famous work, ‘The Virginian’, would later become a TV series starring Doug McClure, and filmed for the silver screen, most recently in an adaptation starring Ron Perlman. Wister died in Rhode Island, at the age of 78.

Book excerpt: In the tradition of Helen Fielding and Cathy Yardley, RWA Golden Heart Award-winner, Nancy Robards Thompson makes her Five Star debut with this humorous, wry and sometimes poignant journey of self-discovery. Olivia Logan has always played it safe and quiet, but when her fianci calls from France to tell her he's married another woman, he provides a catalyst for her to reinvent herself. Knowing that her dreams are hand-me-downs from her mother, and surrounded by well-meaning friends, honorable and not-so-honorable men, and a job that's falling apart, Olivia begins to recognize that living a little isn't nearly as important as living a lot. Nancy Robards Thompson earned a degree in journalism only to realize reporting just the facts bored her silly. Much more content to report to her muse, Nancy has found nirvana doing what she loves most - writing romantic fiction. This two-time nominee for the Romance Writers of America's Golden Heart struck gold in July 2002 when she won the coveted award. Nancy lives in Florida and dreams of living the life of a bohemian writer in Paris with her husband, daughter and their three cats. Reinventing Olivia is her first published novel.

Book Words That Work

Download or read book Words That Work written by Dr. Frank Luntz and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2007-01-02 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nation's premier communications expert shares his wisdom on how the words we choose can change the course of business, of politics, and of life in this country In Words That Work, Luntz offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the tactical use of words and phrases affects what we buy, who we vote for, and even what we believe in. With chapters like "The Ten Rules of Successful Communication" and "The 21 Words and Phrases for the 21st Century," he examines how choosing the right words is essential. Nobody is in a better position to explain than Frank Luntz: He has used his knowledge of words to help more than two dozen Fortune 500 companies grow. Hell tell us why Rupert Murdoch's six-billion-dollar decision to buy DirectTV was smart because satellite was more cutting edge than "digital cable," and why pharmaceutical companies transitioned their message from "treatment" to "prevention" and "wellness." If you ever wanted to learn how to talk your way out of a traffic ticket or talk your way into a raise, this book's for you.

Book Salt Sugar Fat

Download or read book Salt Sugar Fat written by Michael Moss and published by Signal. This book was released on 2013-02-26 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter at The New York Times comes the troubling story of the rise of the processed food industry -- and how it used salt, sugar, and fat to addict us. Salt Sugar Fat is a journey into the highly secretive world of the processed food giants, and the story of how they have deployed these three essential ingredients, over the past five decades, to dominate the North American diet. This is an eye-opening book that demonstrates how the makers of these foods have chosen, time and again, to double down on their efforts to increase consumption and profits, gambling that consumers and regulators would never figure them out. With meticulous original reporting, access to confidential files and memos, and numerous sources from deep inside the industry, it shows how these companies have pushed ahead, despite their own misgivings (never aired publicly). Salt Sugar Fat is the story of how we got here, and it will hold the food giants accountable for the social costs that keep climbing even as some of the industry's own say, "Enough already."

Book excerpt: The New York Times bestseller A New York Times Notable and Critics’ Top Book of 2016 Longlisted for the PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award for Nonfiction One of NPR's 10 Best Books Of 2016 Faced Tough Topics Head On NPR's Book Concierge Guide To 2016’s Great Reads San Francisco Chronicle's Best of 2016: 100 recommended books A Washington Post Notable Nonfiction Book of 2016 Globe & Mail 100 Best of 2016 “Formidable and truth-dealing . . . necessary.” —The New York Times “This eye-opening investigation into our country’s entrenched social hierarchy is acutely relevant.” —O Magazine In her groundbreaking bestselling history of the class system in America, Nancy Isenberg upends history as we know it by taking on our comforting myths about equality and uncovering the crucial legacy of the ever-present, always embarrassing—if occasionally entertaining—poor white trash. “When you turn an election into a three-ring circus, there’s always a chance that the dancing bear will win,” says Isenberg of the political climate surrounding Sarah Palin. And we recognize how right she is today. Yet the voters who boosted Trump all the way to the White House have been a permanent part of our American fabric, argues Isenberg. The wretched and landless poor have existed from the time of the earliest British colonial settlement to today's hillbillies. They were alternately known as “waste people,” “offals,” “rubbish,” “lazy lubbers,” and “crackers.” By the 1850s, the downtrodden included so-called “clay eaters” and “sandhillers,” known for prematurely aged children distinguished by their yellowish skin, ragged clothing, and listless minds. Surveying political rhetoric and policy, popular literature and scientific theories over four hundred years, Isenberg upends assumptions about America’s supposedly class-free society––where liberty and hard work were meant to ensure real social mobility. Poor whites were central to the rise of the Republican Party in the early nineteenth century, and the Civil War itself was fought over class issues nearly as much as it was fought over slavery. Reconstruction pitted poor white trash against newly freed slaves, which factored in the rise of eugenics–-a widely popular movement embraced by Theodore Roosevelt that targeted poor whites for sterilization. These poor were at the heart of New Deal reforms and LBJ’s Great Society; they haunt us in reality TV shows like Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and Duck Dynasty. Marginalized as a class, white trash have always been at or near the center of major political debates over the character of the American identity. We acknowledge racial injustice as an ugly stain on our nation’s history. With Isenberg’s landmark book, we will have to face the truth about the enduring, malevolent nature of class as well.

They're sixteen, and they are . . . fine. Scarlett comes home and finds a mom she barely recognizes, and doesn't really recognize the person she's supposed to be, either. But she thinks she remembers Lucas. Lucas remembers Scarlett, too, except they're entirely unable to recall where they've been or what happened to them. Neither of them remember the sixth victim, Max--the only one who hasn't come back. Which leaves Max's sister, Avery, wanting answers. She wants to find her brother--dead or alive--and isn't buying this whole memory-loss story. But as details of the disappearance begin to unfold, no one is prepared for the truth. This unforgettable novel--with its rich characters, high stakes, and plot twists--will leave readers breathless.

Book Gladiators

  • Author : Roger Dunkle
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2013-09-13
  • ISBN : 1317905202
  • Pages : 403 pages

Download or read book Gladiators written by Roger Dunkle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The games comprised gladiatorial fights, staged animal hunts (venationes) and the executions of convicted criminals and prisoners of war. Besides entertaining the crowd, the games delivered a powerful message of Roman power: as a reminder of the wars in which Rome had acquired its empire, the distant regions of its far-flung empire (from where they had obtained wild beasts for the venatio), and the inevitability of Roman justice for criminals and those foreigners who had dared to challenge the empire's authority. Though we might see these games as bloodthirsty, cruel and reprehensible condemning any alien culture out of hand for a sport that offends our sensibilities smacks of cultural chauvinism. Instead one should judge an ancient sport by the standards of its contemporary cultural context. This book offers a fascinating, and fair historical appraisal of gladiatorial combat, which will bring the games alive to the reader and help them see them through the eyes of the ancient Romans. It will answer questions about gladiatorial combat such as: What were its origins? Why did it disappear? Who were gladiators? How did they become gladiators? What was there training like? How did the Romans view gladiators? How were gladiator shows produced and advertised? What were the different styles of gladiatorial fighting? Did gladiator matches have referees? Did every match end in the death of at least one gladiator? Were gladiator games mere entertainment or did they play a larger role in Roman society? What was their political significance?
