Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Court of a Saint Long the road which borders the meadows between Paris and Montl'hery there was, on a spring morning of the year 1227, an air of great bustle and commotion. From the gates of the city Since daybreak bands of men had been marching out till the road was an avenue, not of the straight poplars of the Seine country, but of armed men. Stout burghers in imposing if unaccustomed armour lined the way, followed by men with maces and cross-bows. Among them moved not a few knights with shining helmets and shields, and squires in charge of those heavy masses of tapestry beneath which lurked the horses of the Middle Ages. Here and there were glimpses of the ragged smocks and bright pitchforks of peasants from the fields, the gay head-dresses of women, the white and black cowls of passing monks. In the foreground of these moving figures may be pictured the prancing dogs and dignified flowers of a Botticelli or Filippo Lippi, in the background, the white towers and the white walls of Paris. In that eager crowd every face was turned towards the far-away turrets of Montl'hery. Above all the noise and gossip rose one persistent rumour, of how the lord King and his mother were returning to Paris, of how the lords of Champagne and Boulogne, of Dreux and Brittany. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Download or read book The Court of Louis XV Classic Reprint written by Imbert De Saint-Amand and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Court of Louis XV What conclusion can one draw from this except that neither the dazzle of riches, the prestige of pride, the fumes of incense, the caresses of flattery, the false joys of sensual pleasure, nor the intoxica tions of power can make man happy! He thirsts in the middle of the fountain; he finds thorns in the crown of roses that encircles his forehead, and a gnawing worm creeps, like Cleopatra's asp, into the odorous flowers whose perfume he inhales. The lamps of the festival grow dim, the boudoirs look like tombs, and suddenly the Manes, Telecl, Phares, appears in flaming letters on the portals of gold and marble. 0 King, expect neither truce to thy woes nor distraction from thine ennui, that implacable companion of thy grandeur! Thou art thine own enemy, and all will betray thee, because thou art not reconciled with thyself. Most Christian King, son of Saint Louis, thou dost suffer, and oughtest to suffer, for thou canst neither seat thyself tranquilly upon the throne nor kneel before the altar! Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saints and Heroes: Since the Middle Ages ON the last day of October, in the year 1517, a German monk posted a paper on a\church door in Wittenberg. It was written in Latin, and was addressed to theologians. It contained a series of state ments concerning the doctrine and practice of indulgences. The writer desired to have the matter discussed. It seemed to him that there was something wrong about it, and he would be glad to hear what wiser men might say. Here, he said, are indulgences preached and sold through out the Church: is it right? Is it in accord ance with the gospel and the truth? The paper was a question. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Lives and Legends of English Saints Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lives and Legends of English Saints Classic Reprint written by L. M. Shortt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives and Legends of English Saints In presenting to the public this treatise on the "Lives and Legends of English Saints," which is intended to form a prelude to further volumes on the holy men and women belonging to the other parts of the United Kingdom, I should like to say a few words, first as to its title and arrangement, and lastly as to its subject. I am well aware that there are many persons who will accept the life of a Saint with comparative readiness, but who will exclaim in horror at the credulity of those who can accept a legend or a miracle. And yet their attitude, in my humble opinion at least, appears somewhat irrational. I naturally do not wish to imply that every - I might almost say any - legend is to be accepted without reserve, but I would affirm that almost every legend contains some germ at least of truth, in that it indicates - though often in an allegorical form some characteristic of the Saint in question, or, more rarely, a poetical exposition of some familiar truth of Holy Scripture. Book Saints Legends Classic Reprint

Download or read book Saints Legends Classic Reprint written by Gordon Hall Gerould and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saints' Legends In the pages that follow I have tried to write the history of saints' legends as one part of the survey of English literature to be presented by the series of which this volume is a member. My difficulties have been many. Although the lives of saints began to affect the vernacular literatures of Europe as soon as such literatures came into being, and although legends in the vulgar tongues were everywhere exceedingly popular until modern times, they have been little studied, at least in their relations to one another and to their historical backgrounds. I have had, as a matter of fact, no model for this book, since no such study has hitherto been made for any of the European literatures. I have had at once the pleasures and the pains of mapping out a new region. I can only hope that I have escaped some of the errors to which the pioneer in cartography is liable. Furthermore, it has required a good deal of patience to disentangle what I can only describe as the snarl of legends from the later Middle Ages. Here, again, other scholars have given me little help, though I must gratefully acknowledge my indebtedness to Dr. Horstmann, who by his indomitable zeal in editing texts has done more than any other one man to make my study possible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work.
