Book The Nature Study Course Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Nature Study Course Classic Reprint written by Sidney Silcox and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nature Study Course The introduction of nature study as a subject Of the school course is an effort to meet, in part, these changed conditions. Through the school garden the activities of the child are brought into play. In the study of nature he is led to consider the materials and processes of social life. His powers of observation are stimulated, and his study of the lower forms of life has the effect of broadening his sympathies for life in general. In spite, however, of the fact that nature study now holds an established place in the school curriculum, there are still those among the public, and even among the teaching profession, who consider its introduction as a formal subject of study to have been unnecessary. In reply it may be said that in general the best teach ers in the past have taught nature study, even before its formal introduction. The fact is indisputable that literature, composition, geography, and drawing, can not be properly taught except by means of nature study. Whether formally prescribed or not, it must be taught; and it is, one may be certain, from the most inefficient teachers that the greatest objection is sure to come. So-called teachers, who follow only the bare letter of the curriculum, are sure to object to any innovation as a probable addition to their work. Book Nature s Geography

Download or read book Nature s Geography written by Karl S. Zimmerer and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America are increasingly influenced by human-induced environmental changes. It is crucial that sustainable development be based on insights into these expanding processes--conservation as well as deterioration. Nature's Geography offers a new perspective on the geographical nature of these changes. The book reveals how human-environment relations must be understood at multiple scales and time frames. Editors Karl S. Zimmerer and Kenneth R. Young have forged an exciting group of case studies from distinguished geographers focusing on high mountains, tropical forests, and lowlands, as well as humid and arid-semiarid landscapes. Each chapter analyzes the implications for meshing environmental protection and sound resource use with development. The case studies evaluate three topics: spatial habitat fragmentation and forest dynamics; disturbances in mountain ecosystems; and the major activities of settled areas, chiefly farming, livestock-raising, and forestry. Included are analyses of interactions involving wildlife, such as primates and wild pandas; assessment of fire impacts and road-building; long-term forest management as well as recent techniques; and the role of environmental variation and ecosystem properties in agriculture and rangeland. Nature's Geography demonstrates the vital importance of advancing a new approach to geography. This definitive study of landscape change and environmental dynamics will have wide appeal for those interested in geography, ecology, environmental studies, conservation biology, and development studies.

  • Pages : 934 pages

Download or read book Nature Guiding written by William Gould Vinal and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 934 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nature Guiding is the science of inculcating nature enthusiasm, nature principles, and nature facts into the spirit of individuals. "Doing" nature-study means observing, wondering, and solving problems. It could include collecting, building, measuring, painting, planning, writing, touching, experimenting or any of a wide range of other activities. Most importantly, it allows children to be "original investigators." This book is intended as a resource for teachers and students engaged in nature study at summer camps and in schools. William Gould Vinal believed that the teacher of nature study should be "in sympathy with the simple life and the country way," that the nature study should emphasize observation of the interactions of plants and animals in their environment, and not be reduced to matters of taxonomy and anatomy. In Nature Guiding, he offers advice to camp counselors and school teachers on incorporating nature study into everyday activities, as well as suggestions for parents and others about using visits to state and national parks to teach nature lore.
