Book Behind the Scenes

Download or read book Behind the Scenes written by Christina Hardyment and published by ABRAMS. This book was released on 1997 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christina Hardyment conducted a fascinating quest into the history of housekeeping through the well-preserved properties of Britain's National Trust, among them Petworth, Uppark, Shugborough, and Lanhydrock. To reconstruct the ingenious methods used by earlier generations to make a house a home and to keep themselves warm and well-fed, she squirmed through drains, poked around sculleries and cellars, and clambered into icehouses and up chimneys. The result of her explorations is an informative, amusing text that recounts not only the history of the kitchen, the bathroom, and the laundry, but also investigates bakehouses and breweries, dairies and dovecotes, the lamp room and the larder. Accompanying Hardyment's descriptions of what she found in great mansions, humble cottages, medieval castles and Victorian townhouses are archival documents and accounts and a wealth of color photographs, many taken especially for this book.

Book The People s Home Recipe Book

Download or read book The People s Home Recipe Book written by Mrs. Alice Gitchell Kirk and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The People's Home Recipe Book: Book II of the People's Home Library Though the world is full of cook books of every description, yet it has been my experience that there are few of them that are more than a collection of recipes. There are few really good teachers of the science of cooking. For the past thirty years the author has been engaged in teaching of some kind, ranging from kindergarten work to assistant at Chicago University and from private teacher of cooking to Public Lecturer on Domestic Science. This training has not only given mea knowledge of the subjects in hand but has perhaps rendered me capable of imparting this knowledge to others in a way to be easily. Understood by all. Having managed a home of my own for twelve years and having lived in both the country and the city have probably given me a knowledge of the practical needs of the average home. Further than this I am called upon reg ularly each week by 'phone to direct the culinary affairs of many Cleveland homes, thus giving me the practical experience which is lacking in so many teachers of Domestic Science. Furthermore, during the past five years I have delivered (and am still engaged in the lecture work) a series of over six hun dred public lectures on cooking, a larger number than ever before delivered on this subject by any woman in one place. These things have brought me in direct contact with thousands of people of all classes, given me a knowledge of their needs and at the same time fitted me for imparting this knowledge to others in a practical way. Having been principal of private schools and being at the present time a member of The Domestic Science and Art Association of Cleveland, and The American Home Economics Association of Chicago, and also! State Secretary of The Associated Clubs of Domestic Science has brought me in contact with many of our ablest instructors in Domestic Science and afforded me an excellent opportunity to get the best and most modern ideas relative to the science of booking. These ideas I have endeavored to incorporate in this work, leaving out the technical things and making them practical for the home. Book The Oxford Handbook of Kenyan Politics

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Kenyan Politics written by Nic Cheeseman and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kenya is one of the most politically dynamic and influential countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Today, it is known in equal measure as a country that has experienced great highs and tragic lows. In the 1960s and 1970s, Kenya was seen as a ''success story" of development in the periphery, and also led the way in terms of democratic breakthroughs in 2010 when a new constitution devolved power and placed new constraints on the president. However, the country has also made international headlines for the kind of political instability that occurs when electoral violence is expressed along ethnic lines, such as during the "Kenya crisis" of 2007/08 when over 1,000 people lost their lives and almost 700,000 were displaced. The Oxford Handbook of Kenyan Politics explains these developments and many more, drawing together 50 specially commissioned chapters by leading researchers. The chapters they have contributed address a range of essential topics including the legacy of colonial rule, ethnicity, land politics, devolution, the constitution, elections, democracy, foreign aid, the informal economy, civil society, human rights, the International Criminal Court, the growing influence of China, economic policy, electoral violence, and the impact of mobile phone technology. In addition to covering some of the most important debates about Kenyan politics, the volume provides an insightful overview of Kenyan history from 1930 to the present day and features a set of chapters that review the impact of devolution on regional politics in every part of the country.
