His mother had set a glass of milk on the table beside his bed, and left the stair door ajar so that he could call Hannah, the cook, if he wanted any thing, and then she had gone over to her own room. The little boy had always enjoyed being ill, for then he was read aloud to and had lemonade, but this had been a real illness, and though he was better now the doctor still would not let him have anything but milk and gruel. He was feeling rather lonely, too, though the fire crackled cheer fully, and he could hear Hannah singing to herself in the kitchen below. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New World Fairy Book Rennie's father was a teacher; and when he was teaching white men's knowledge to the young redskins in the little log school-house, or making up lessons for them in his log study, his own small boy used to play among the litter of hickory shavings down on the bank of the big river and bother the Indian men and women who sat there making snowshoes and lacrosse sticks. They rather liked his bothering, even those who could hardly understand a word of his chatter; and the whittling and stringing never went on so merrily when Little Sunrise had to stay at home helping his mother about the house. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Knave of Hearts: A Fairy Story My aunt sipped a glass of wine and wiped her lips with a handkerchief, the exquisite lace embroidery of which was yellow with time. She had a thin face, with a peaked chin and small ferret eyes. Her nose was a marked aquiline. She wore no cap, and her hair, which, though snow-white, was still abundant, lay smooth as wax upon either side of the part, and culminated at each temple in a knob-like bunch of curls. Her dress was precise in its neatness, but of extreme simplicity. A straight gown of black silk, unrelieved by ornament or conventionalized by crinoline, had been her costume as far back as my memory extended.
