Book The contribution that reporting of greenhouse gas emissions makes to the UK meeting its climate change objectives

Download or read book The contribution that reporting of greenhouse gas emissions makes to the UK meeting its climate change objectives written by Great Britain. Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-11-30 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report examines the contribution that corporate reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions makes to the UK meeting its climate change objectives. Current research shows that businesses are considering their environmental impact at the highest level. 62 per cent of FTSE all-share companies reported quantified figures on climate change or energy use in their 2009 annual reports. Measuring emissions, then reporting, enables enabling target-setting which leads to emissions reductions. There is significant and growing interest from investors in GHG emissions data and investor pressure is one of the main drivers for reporting. Though there are costs in the reporting process, the research found additional benefits for companies in areas such as reputation, brand value, improving investor relations and being able to respond to shareholder requests.

Book Building a Low carbon Economy

Download or read book Building a Low carbon Economy written by Great Britain. Committee on Climate Change and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change resulting from CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions poses a huge threat to human welfare. To contain that threat, the world needs to cut emissions by about 50 per cent by 2050, and to start cutting emissions now. A global agreement to take action is vital. A fair global deal will require the UK to cut emissions by at least 80 per cent below 1990 levels by 2050. In this report, the Committee on Climate Change explains why the UK should aim for an 80 per cent reduction by 2050 and how that is attainable, and then recommends the first three budgets that will define the path to 2022. But the path is attainable at manageable cost, and following it is essential if the UK is to play its fair part in avoiding the far higher costs of harmful climate change. Part 1 of the report addresses the 2050 target. The 80 per cent target should apply to the sum of all sectors of the UK economy, including international aviation and shipping. The costs to the UK from this level of emissions reduction can be made affordable - estimated at between 1-2 per cent of GDP in 2050. In part 2, the Committee sets out the first three carbon budgets covering the period 2008-22, and examines the feasible reductions possible in various sectors: decarbonising the power sector; energy use in buildings and industry; reducing domestic transport emissions; reducing emissions of non-CO2 greenhouse gases; economy wide emissions reductions to meet budgets. The third part of the report examines wider economic and social impacts from budgets including competitiveness, fuel poverty, security of supply, and differences in circumstances between the regions of the UK.

Book Memorandum to the Energy and Climate Change Committee Post Legislative Scrutiny of the Climate Change Act 2008 Cm 8696

Download or read book Memorandum to the Energy and Climate Change Committee Post Legislative Scrutiny of the Climate Change Act 2008 Cm 8696 written by Great Britain: Department of Energy and Climate Change and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013-09-04 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memorandum provides a preliminary assessment of the Climate Change Act 2008 ch. 27 (ISBN 9780105427087) The Act aims to create a legislative framework for the effective management and delivery of policies to tackle climate change, in particular by: a). establishing an economically credible emissions reduction pathway to 2050, by putting into statute medium and long-term targets and a system of carbon budgets; b). providing greater clarity and predictability for industry to plan effectively for, and invest in, a low-carbon economy; c). providing a strong evidence base and expertise to underpin statutory targets; d). establishing a duty on the Government regularly to assess the risks to the UK from climate change and draw up a programme to address them; and e. creating a power for the Government to require a range of public authorities or statutory bodies to assess and address the impacts of climate change. The memorandum concludes that the Act has created an effective legislative framework and is structured to provide a degree of flexibility, setting a framework to motivate and enable policy action without being too prescriptive about how the framework should be applied. This is required to address the inherent unpredictability around future emissions projections and to ensure that mitigation is not unnecessarily costly. In this vein, the Climate Change Act allows for a carbon budget level to be amended if it appears to Government that there have been significant changes affecting the basis on which the previous decision was made

This book was released on 2011-10-11 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report by the Environmental Audit Committee welcomes the Government's decision to set the fourth carbon budget - required under the Climate Change Act - at the level recommended by the independent Committee on Climate Change. But it questions the Government's decision to announce a review of this budget in 2014 in response to fears that it could be bad for business. The MPs warn that the prospect of a review could weaken investor confidence in low-carbon industries as it creates uncertainty about the future trajectory of emissions reductions. In setting the fourth carbon budget, the Government announced that it would bring forward a package of measures to help energy intensive industries most at risk of so-called 'carbon leakage'. There should be a robust sector-by-sector assessment of whether jobs and production could be displaced by the UK's carbon budgets. The 2014 review could ease the budget if the UK's emissions reduction trajectory is steeper than that required by the EU's Emissions Trading System. However, the recommended carbon budgets should be regarded as an absolute minimum - less ambitious budgets would make the UK's 2050 climate change targets harder and more costly to achieve. The MPs strongly support the mandatory emissions reporting by business in order to aid transparency and illustrate the contributions that companies are making. The report also criticises Ministers for dropping plans to require Government Departments and Local Authorities to budget for the carbon emissions produced by their policies and operations.

Download or read book Companies and Climate Change written by Lisa Benjamin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-29 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Companies lie at the heart of the climate crisis and are both culpable for, and vulnerable to, its impacts. Rising social and investor concern about the escalating risks of climate change are changing public and investor expectations of businesses and, as a result, corporate approaches to climate change. Dominant corporate norms that put shareholders (and their wealth maximization) at the heart of company law are viewed by many as outdated and in need of reform. Companies and Climate Change analyzes these developments by assessing the regulation and pressures that impact energy companies in the UK, with lessons that apply worldwide. In this work, Lisa Benjamin shows how the Paris Agreement, climate and energy law in the EU and the UK, and transnational human rights and climate litigation, are regulatory and normative developments that illustrate how company law can and should act as a bridge to progressive corporate climate action.

Book Environmental Security

Download or read book Environmental Security written by Rita Floyd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-04 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic development, population growth and poor resource management have combined to alter the planet’s natural environment in dramatic and alarming ways. For over twenty years, considerable research and debate have focused on clarifying or disputing linkages between various forms of environmental change and various understandings of security. At one extreme lie sceptics who contend that the linkages are weak or even non-existent; they are simply attempts to harness the resources of the security arena to an environmental agenda. At the other extreme lie those who believe that these linkages may be the most important drivers of security in the 21st century; indeed, the very future of humankind may be at stake. This book brings together contributions from a range of disciplines to present a critical and comprehensive overview of the research and debate linking environmental factors to security. It provides a framework for representing and understanding key areas of intellectual convergence and disagreement, clarifying achievements of the research as well as identifying its weaknesses and gaps. Part I explores the various ways environmental change and security have been linked, and provides principal critiques of this linkage. Part II explores the linkage through analysis of key issue areas such as climate change, energy, water, food, population, and development. Finally, the book concludes with a discussion of the value of this subfield of security studies, and with some ideas about the questions it might profitably address in the future. This volume is the first to provide a comprehensive overview of the field. With contributions from around the world, it combines established and emerging scholars to offer a platform for the next wave of research and policy activity. It is invaluable for both students and practitioners interested in international relations, environment studies and human geography.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report finds that the Government is only on track to meet its first carbon budget because of the impact of the recession. There is now a worrying shortfall in delivery; UK emissions are currently falling by only about 1 per cent per year, instead of the 2-3 per cent per year which is needed. The management of the carbon budget is as vital as that of the fiscal budget and requires the same level of political attention, civil service commitment, and parliamentary scrutiny. Although the scientific case for more stringent targets is growing, the Government should focus on making more rapid progress against its existing budgets. The Government must first deliver the carbon savings promised in its Low Carbon Transition Plan, then urgently bring forward new measures to increase the rate at which emissions are falling to 2-3 per cent per year and then move to tighten carbon budgets and increase the 2020 target for reducing emissions to a cut of 42 per cent on 1990 levels by 2020. The Committee is also calling on the Government to: work in international climate negotiations on getting emissions to peak as soon as possible; secure competitive advantages for the UK in emerging markets for low-carbon technologies by being prepared to move unilaterally; monitor the latest science and start planning the options available for reducing emissions further and faster in case the scale of the crisis demands bigger cuts; put the right regulatory framework in place to ensure that we do not wrongly invest in high-carbon infrastructure.

This book was released on 2013-06-10 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hafren Power's proposal for an 18km fixed tidal barrage across the Severn estuary between Brean in England and Lavernock Point in Wales is likely to require a very high level of support over many years. It is not believed at this stage that the barrage would be competitive with other low-carbon technologies. Hafren Power have failed to answer the serious environmental concerns about a potential barrage adequately. The scale of mitigation measures and compensatory habitat required is unprecedented, and questions remain about how a barrage such as the one proposed would comply with EU legislation. Tidal energy is a vast resource which remains largely untapped. However, tidal and marine projects must demonstrate their economic, environmental and technological credentials and their ability to gain stakeholder support. The Government should consider whether a smaller tidal facility could develop expertise and provide evidence before a decision about scaling up is taken. Although construction of the barrage would be privately financed, Government support would be required for approximately thirty years through Contracts for Difference (CfD) or a similar mechanism. The long lifecycle of a tidal barrage, thought to operate for over 120 years, could lower the overall levelised cost of energy but is far too distant a prospect to overcome more immediate concerns. The strike price required by Hafren Power is unknown, but the ability of the project to compete with other low-carbon forms of energy is questionable. The likelihood of a high strike price over many years risks eating up an excessively large proportion of the funds available under the Levy Control Framework
