Book excerpt: The current qualitative phenomenological study involved identifying and exploring the factors contributing to the nursing faculty shortage of Western Massachusetts. Through interviews, 24 participants, including 5 for the pilot study, identified and discussed the reasons why they chose not to teach, or to continue to teach, and why registered nurses did not choose faculty teaching as a career track in education. Poor salaries were the primary factor contributing to the shortage of nursing faculty in Western Massachusetts. Participants provided personal insight and suggestions concerning various educational institutions in Western Massachusetts and participated in a Massachusetts survey that examined many suggestions to alleviate the faculty shortage in Western Massachusetts.

Book excerpt: While hospitals are facing an endless number of challenges ranging from financial challenges to healthcare reform implementation to patient safety and quality, a challenge that has proven to be consistently plaguing hospitals is the efficient staffing of nurses. According to the American College of Healthcare Executives, shortage of staff has been in the top five issues facing hospital CEOs (Hospital, 2011). In the past few years, the healthcare industry contributes more jobs to the economy than any other industry. Even though this is the case, the demand for some health professionals is still greater than the supply available. The exact number of nurses in demand varies from hospital to hospital, publication to publication, but the overall consensus remains the same: there are not enough nurses currently working and the problem is going to continue to get worse. The reason for this nursing shortage cannot be easily explained, as there are several contributing factors. The nursing shortage has been growing since the 1980s and becoming increasingly severe. It has been projected that the shortage could reach 800,000 nurses by the year 2020 (HeartMath, 2004). It was originally believed that this shortage was caused by the increasing demand of health care services due to the aging population. During the 1990s, there were attempts to recruit more nurses and this seemed like a simple solution to the problem. However, even with the growing number of students entering nursing school, the shortage continued to grow (HeartMath, 2004). These factors were making it clear that the nursing problem was complex and worthy of further exploration. This capstone will provide an understanding of the numerous factors that contribute to the nursing shortage, explore the impact of the nursing shortage on the health care system, and iv will help identify possible solutions to the growing problem. The major factors contributing to the nursing shortage problem include: 1. Workplace Climate 2. Shortage of Experienced Nursing Faculty After these factors are explored and identified, the impact of the nursing shortage on health care will be presented, and long-term and short-term solutions to the problem will be discussed and evaluated. Long-term solutions include increased recruitment of nurses through the expansion of facilities and the retainment of faculty in schools. Another long-term solution is the participation of hospitals in the development and aid to existing schools. A final long-term solution to the nursing shortage is the development of public-private partnerships to implement policy that will help to turn the problem around and foster relationships between stakeholders that have similar interests in different fields. Short-term solutions include the retention of current nurses through reward accomplishment, providing an attractive compensation and benefits plan, and offering job stability. Other short-term solutions include the utilization of technology-based training, and redesigning work content and the role of the nurse to be more flexible in nature. A final short-term solution is the implementation of an automated staffing system that will help provide more power to the nurses and help with job satisfaction. The nursing shortage currently in effect is expected to get worse before it gets better. A report done by Price Waterhouse Cooper forecasts a registered nurse shortage ranging from 400,000 to one million by the year 2020. The combination of an increasing demand for services and the constant decline of nurses available is compounding the problem by adding pressure to the supply and demand forces at work (Neisner, 2002). Nurses have increasingly become v perceived as undervalued and overworked with less than desirable working conditions. There are various reasons that lead to the complex nursing shortage problem.

Nurses should be fully engaged with other health professionals and assume leadership roles in redesigning care in the United States. To ensure its members are well-prepared, the profession should institute residency training for nurses, increase the percentage of nurses who attain a bachelor's degree to 80 percent by 2020, and double the number who pursue doctorates. Furthermore, regulatory and institutional obstacles-including limits on nurses' scope of practice-should be removed so that the health system can reap the full benefit of nurses' training, skills, and knowledge in patient care. In this book, the Institute of Medicine makes recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing.

Many factors contribute to the nursing faculty shortage such as retirement, dissatisfaction with the nursing faculty role and low salary compensation. Academic incivility has been identified as contributing to nursing faculty role dissatisfaction. Academic incivility diminishes the presence of a caring environment, lowers an individual's self-esteem, and negatively impacts the formation of caring relationships. Nursing faculty members who experience significant and ongoing academic incivility indicate they will leave nursing education as a career. The purpose of this Academic Incivility in Nursing Education (AINE) Project was to promote the utilization of evidence-based strategies to develop a civil educational environment for nursing faculty through active engagement and dialogue among a group of nursing faculty to address academic incivility. This AINE Project purpose was achieved by surveying a group of nursing faculty regarding their perceptions and experiences with academic incivility. Two continuing education sessions were provided to address academic incivility and to promote a civil educational environment. The findings from this AINE Project supported the conjecture that when academic incivility is perceived as mild within an educational environment, there is increased work satisfaction and a positive relational engagement between the nursing faculty members.

Book excerpt: National predictions forecast a significant shortage of registered nurses by 2020, with one of the major causes of the shortage being a lack of qualified nurse educators. Predictions for the state of Ohio mirror the national picture; however, there is little research about nursing faculty in the state, or their intentions related to their academic role. This dissertation analyzed what factors, if any, predict intent to leave academe within five years. Participants included 426 full-time nursing faculty from 60 public and private, not-for-profit nursing programs in Ohio, including both pre-licensure and advanced degree programs. A web-based survey was used to obtain faculty data. Blocked stepwise regression analysis revealed four significant predictors of intent to leave academe within five years - age, years ago highest nursing and non-nursing degree were earned, and overall satisfaction. The results of the research can be used to guide the development of strategies to retain nursing faculty in academe in the state of Ohio. Future research should be encouraged to explore the underlying issue related to the faculty shortage and its implications for the nursing shortage.

First, a brief history of nursing shortages is provided. Contributing factors to the shortage such as retiring baby boomers, decreased numbers of nursing faculty, and an expansion in nurse workloads are examined. Several solutions to combat the shortage were discovered in the literature review. Retaining aging nurses, increasing faculty and student enrollments in nursing programs, and ways to reduce nurse burnout are investigated. Nurses need to promote nursing as a profession to students as a potential career choice. Future projections of the nursing shortage across the United States will necessitate innovative solutions to address this far-reaching problem.

At a time when the health care industry requires more nurses, the capacity of the nursing education system is diminishing (Henry & Zane, 2006). The nursing shortage is intricately tied to the nursing faculty shortage (AACN, 2006). The shortage of nurses requires educational programs to supply more graduates; however, the shortage of nursing faculty limits student enrollments and likely decreases the number of graduates. The nursing shortage is due, in the past, to a decrease in the number of individuals entering the profession. Additionally, an inadequate number of teaching facilities, a limited number of clinical sites, and decreased availability of qualified nursing faculty are contributing to the shortage (AACN, 2006). Nursing is bound in an ideology based on women's duty and members of the profession have had to battle sexist beliefs and values (Orla & Reilly, 2003). Hierarchies within the health care system and academia place the status of women subservient to men. Subsequently, the crisis in the nursing profession cannot be explored without examining the relationship between the role of the nurse and the position of women (Kane & Thomas, 2000). The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the influence of gender, practice, and policy on the nursing faculty shortage as perceived by nurse educators. Using a qualitative approach through the phenomenological method, the researcher elicited information about lived experiences of female nurse educators. Feminist critical analysis provided the framework to explore the nursing faculty shortage. Two major themes were revealed: "Being a woman, nurse, and faculty member" and "Gender-role conflict." Minor themes that expressed the richness of the major themes included: gender role orientation, reward and punishment in higher education, paradoxical communication, us and them mentality, lack of support within the profession, and more career opportunities for women. The data indicated nurse educators perceive that employment in gendered institutions may influence their work environments, compensation levels, and federal and state policy development thus contributing to the nursing faculty shortage.
