Book Rediscovering the Other America

Download or read book Rediscovering the Other America written by Keith Kilty and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn why it is imperative to bring a progressive focus back to social welfare policy! This vital book explores recent research on poverty and inequality, identifies strategies for ensuring adequate services, and challenges many of the inaccurate beliefs that were used to justify welfare reform legislation in 1996. You'll find up-to-date information on various marginalized groups and their social problems, including lack of health coverage for women with mental health, substance abuse, and domestic violence problems. In addition, you'll find data on the health coverage situation for the poor, for Appalachians, and for women in general. Finally, Rediscovering the Other America: The Continuing Crisis of Poverty and Inequality in the United States suggests strategies for changing public perceptions about the nature of poverty and the poor. From the editors: “In 1962, Michael Harrington published The Other America, which documented how deeply entrenched poverty and inequality were in one of the wealthiest countries in the world. Four decades later, we find it necessary once again to rediscover this profound social condition. The purpose of this book is to awaken policymakers and the public to this situation once again, in order to affect the nature of public policies dealing with these issues.” Rediscovering the Other America: The Continuing Crisis of Poverty and Inequality in the United States covers a wide range of issues, some similar to what Harrington described in 1962 and some reflecting recent social, political, and economic developments. Specifically, the book addresses: providing health care coverage for the poor why poverty persisted during the economic boom of the Clinton presidency politicians' views and beliefs regarding poverty, welfare, and welfare recipients the impact of the 1996 welfare reform legislation on the nonprofit sector economic differences between women and men poverty in Appalachia the impact of welfare reform on those who receive public assistance

Book Inflation or Depression

Download or read book Inflation or Depression written by Cy Gonick and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 1975-01-01 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in the mid-1970s, Inflation or Depression attributes the contemporary world economic crisis to the post-Vietnam War decline of the U.S. as a preeminent world economic power. Rather than offering abstract economic theory, Gonick's analysis is based on the actual behaviour of multinational corporations, on the links that bind Western economies together, and on the limitations determining the economic policies of Canada and other countries. The author traces a consistent pattern by which U.S. policymakers intentionally exported their economic problems abroad during the early '70s. Inflation or Depression offers a bold interpretation of the malaise affecting the world economy at the beginning of the 1970s.

Book The Racial Crisis in American Higher Education

Download or read book The Racial Crisis in American Higher Education written by William A. Smith and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Why is it that as we enter the twenty-first century, the nation's predominantly white colleges and universities continue to be settings where people of color feel unwelcome and marginalized? The contributors to this volume dissect a variety of structural and attitudinal factors that are prevalent in the higher education community, organizational constructs and value orientations which seem to hark more to the past than to the future. They comment on the political, social, and economic factors that have shaped academic culture, and buttressed its quietly efficient maintenance of racially discriminatory practices. "The American system of higher education is often regarded as the best in the world. Smith, Altbach, and Lomotey have edited a volume that implicitly asks how much better still it could be if it embraced people of color and provided them with a supportive and nurturing environment, one which encouraged them to reach their fullest creative and intellectual potential. Indeed, this will probably be the most significant challenge that the academy faces in the twenty-first century." — William B. Harvey, Vice President and Director, Office of Minorities in Higher Education American Council on Education, Washington, D.C.

Book The Crisis of Capitalist Democracy

Download or read book The Crisis of Capitalist Democracy written by Richard A. Posner and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following up on his timely and well-received book, A Failure of Capitalism, Richard Posner steps back to take a longer view of the continuing crisis of democratic capitalism as the American and world economies crawl gradually back from the depths to which they had fallen in the autumn of 2008 and the winter of 2009. By means of a lucid narrative of the crisis and a series of analytical chapters pinpointing critical issues of economic collapse and gradual recovery, Posner helps non-technical readers understand business-cycle and financial economics, and financial and governmental institutions, practices, and transactions, while maintaining a neutrality impossible for persons professionally committed to one theory or another. He calls for fresh thinking about the business cycle that would build on the original ideas of Keynes. Central to these ideas is that of uncertainty as opposed to risk. Risk can be quantified and measured. Uncertainty cannot, and in this lies the inherent instability of a capitalist economy. As we emerge from the financial earthquake, a deficit aftershock rumbles. It is in reference to that potential aftershock, as well as to the government's stumbling efforts at financial regulatory reform, that Posner raises the question of the adequacy of our democratic institutions to the economic challenges heightened by the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression. The crisis and the government's energetic response to it have enormously increased the national debt at the same time that structural defects in the American political system may make it impossible to pay down the debt by any means other than inflation or devaluation.
