The seismic sections provided fundamental new insight into deep geological structure of the European continent and the dynamics of continental formation. They formed the basis for worldwide comparative studies of orogenic structure. The complicated signature of the reflections from the deep crust indicated that new processing and interpretation techniques must be considered to better image the crystalline crust. Results of these efforts, including pre-stack migration, 3-D imaging, shear waves and seismic anisotropy, are presented in this special volume. In part, the articles open the perspective to new and future research. In part, they document research activity triggered by technical and interpretational questions raised by DEKORP field work and profiling results. Book excerpt: Given the established nature of geoscientific knowledge of the Kaapvaal craton compared to the Slave craton, and given the exciting new interdisciplinary results coming from the Kaapvaal Project and from Slave craton studies, scientists working on both cratons were brought together in a workshop to compare and contrast the nature of these two cratons. Of the 54 papers presented at the workshop, 24 are included in this volume. There are clearly major similarities and differences between these two Archean cratons. The crust of both was predominantly formed in the Mesoarchean. Both contain crustal sections consisting of terranes of different ages welded together by Archean accretionary events. Both crustal sections are underlain by lithospheric mantle sections consisting of peridotites that experienced extensive partial melt extraction between 2.9 Ga and 3.2 Ga, but this is where the similarities between the cratons end. One of the most striking differences between the Slave and Kaapvaal cartons is the apparent seismic homogeneity of the Kaapvaal craton's SCLM whereas the Slave craton is seismically layered. The seismic layering in the centre of the craton correlates laterally and with depth with electrical layering and geochemical layering. Taken together, these differences suggest that SCLM formation was different for the two cratons, implying that the search for a single causative formation process is bound to fail. The International Lithosphere Program was launched in 1981 as a ten-year project of interdisciplinary research in the solid earth sciences. It is a natural outgrowth of the Geodynamics Program of the 1970's, and of its predecessor, the Upper Mantle Project. The Program — "Dynamics and Evolution of the Lithosphere: The Hazards" — is concerned primarily with the current state, origin and development of the lithosphere, with special attention to the continents and their margins. One special goal of the program is the strengthening of interactions between basic research and the applications of geology, geophysics, geochemistry and geodesy to mineral and energy resource exploration and development, to the mitigation of geological hazards, and to protection of the environment; another special goal is the strengthening of the earth sciences and their effective application in developing countries. The origin and evolution of sedimentary basins is an obvious focus of the International Lithosphere Program because it is fundamentally a problem in the dynamics and evolution of the lithosphere, and moreover, it provides special opportunities for strengthening the interactions between basic research and the applications of geology, geophysics, geochemistry and geodesy to mineral and energy exploration and development. Accordingly, at both the XXVIIth International Geological Congress in Moscow, in 1984, and at the XIXth General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics in Vancouver, in 1987, the International Lithosphere Program convened special symposia on the subject of the origin and evolution of sedimentary basins and their mineral and energy resources.
