Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Contention of the Bards, Vol. 1 Irish Scholars and Irish Historians have been long wishing for a critical edition of the Contention of the Bards. They felt it a shame and a loss that no considerable body of Bardic poetry should exist in print, and they thought it especially desirable that the Contention, which caused such a stir in the Ireland of the early 17th century, should be rescued from the precarious keeping of manuscripts. Download or read book Unity in Diversity Volume 2 written by Julitta Rydlewska and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-11 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work investigates various markers of identity, which, if ignored, may harm the development of the healthy identity of cultural groups at the cost of a progressively instable unity. This is made clear when looking at various areas of linguistics, particularly translation and socio-linguistics, but also when studying cultural and political developments. This book, therefore, constitutes a rich repository for linguists, especially of minority languages and specifically in translational studies and sociolinguistics, and for scholars of cultural and political, as well as literary studies.

Book The Cambridge History of Ireland Volume 2 1550 1730

Download or read book The Cambridge History of Ireland Volume 2 1550 1730 written by Jane Ohlmeyer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-26 with total page 1349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers fresh perspectives on the political, military, religious, social, cultural, intellectual, economic, and environmental history of early modern Ireland and situates these discussions in global and comparative contexts. The opening chapters focus on 'Politics' and 'Religion and War' and offer a chronological narrative, informed by the re-interpretation of new archives. The remaining chapters are more thematic, with chapters on 'Society', 'Culture', and 'Economy and Environment', and often respond to wider methodologies and historiographical debates. Interdisciplinary cross-pollination - between, on the one hand, history and, on the other, disciplines like anthropology, archaeology, geography, computer science, literature and gender and environmental studies - informs many of the chapters. The volume offers a range of new departures by a generation of scholars who explain in a refreshing and accessible manner how and why people acted as they did in the transformative and tumultuous years between 1550 and 1730.

Book A Treatise on Northern Ireland Volume I

Download or read book A Treatise on Northern Ireland Volume I written by Brendan O'Leary and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 3. After the ratification of the Good Friday Agreement in two referendums, for the first time in history political institutions throughout the island of Ireland rested upon the freely given assent of majorities of all the peoples on the island.0It marked, it was hoped, the full political decolonization of Ireland. Whether Ireland would reunify, or whether Northern Ireland remain in union with Great Britain now rested on the will of the people of Ireland, North and South respectively. This volume explains the making of this settlement, and the many failed initiatives that preceded it under British direct rule. Long-term structural and institutional changes and short-term political maneuvers are given their due in this lively but comprehensive assessment. The Anglo-Irish Agreement is identified as the political tipping point, itself partially the outcome of the hunger strikes of 1980-81 that had prevented the criminalization of republicanism. Until 2016 the prudent judgment seemed to be that the Good Friday Agreement had broadly worked, eventually enabling Sinn Fein and the DUP to share power, with intermittent attention from the sovereign governments. Cultural Catholics appeared content if not in love with the Union with Great Britain. But the decision to hold a referendum on the UK's membership of the European Union has collaterally damaged and destabilized the Good Friday Agreement. That, in turn, has shaped the UK's tortured exit negotiations with the European Union.
