Book THE CONSTRAINTS THAT IMPACT WOMEN FACULTY IN THE PARKS RECREATION AND TOURISM MANAGEMENT FIELD AT NC HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS IN THEIR CAREER DEVELOPMENT

Download or read book THE CONSTRAINTS THAT IMPACT WOMEN FACULTY IN THE PARKS RECREATION AND TOURISM MANAGEMENT FIELD AT NC HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS IN THEIR CAREER DEVELOPMENT written by Elizabeth Bengala and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organizational, individual and societal constraints are holding women back from seeking leadership roles in higher education, although it is not just one of these constraints that stand out. It is a combination of all of these constraints together in its own complex equation that challenges women for leadership roles and positions (Arini, Collings, Conner, McPherson, and Wilson, 2011) within higher education. Women within the recreation-related field are challenged by the same constraints but have also struggled for recognition and status (Henderson, Bialeschki, and Sessoms, 1990). While Eagly and Wood (1999) have found that due to the physical differences between men and women, social roles were given to each gender. Therefore, due to the perception of the recreation-related field, challenges within higher education and social roles that are placed upon women, the path that women must take in the development of their career could be complex (Henderson, Harrolle, Rich, and Moretz, 2011). The purpose of this current study was to identify constraints that hinder career development for women faculty within PRTM departments at NC higher education institutions, discover if men and women view these constraint categories differently and reveal if constraints impact women differently at three different career stages. The significance of this current study is to raise the perception of the profession and awareness within higher education for women faculty in the higher education PRTM field. This study will provide a review of literature, framework used to guide the study, the methods of the participants surveyed, how the data was collected and how it was analyzed.

Book Trifecta of Male Dominance

Download or read book Trifecta of Male Dominance written by Ashley Nicole Ryder and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher education has been historically dominated by men (Hunnum et al., 2015). To that end, recent scholarship has shed light on how sport management faculty programs, similar to the sport industry itself, is dominated by men (Baker et al., 2019). Despite this imbalance in gender representation, a dearth of information on the sport management faculty perspective exists. This is cause for concern as faculty members impact students, the academic discipline, and the sport industry (Taylor et al., 2020). Therefore, in order to illuminate the stories of women who are underrepresented in these programs, this study explored the career experiences, navigation of demands, supports, and barriers of women sport management professors. To this end, narrative inquiry (Clandinin & Connelly, 2000) was used in the current study to explore the stories of 10 women sport management professors. During zoom interviews along with reflection journals, participants described their various career experiences, how they navigate career demands, and differing career supports and barriers they have encountered throughout their careers. Themes that emerged through a thematic analysis (Braun & Clark, 2006) of these stories include: (a) culture of academia, (b) individualistic purpose and passion, (c) socialization, (d) career evolution, (e) eliminating systems of inequity, (f) value of mentorship and sponsorship, (g) developing systems of support, (h) gendered systems, (i) lack of support and resources, and (j) being a women professor during a pandemic. Based on the emergent themes, implications are offered for further investigation of career development theory. Furthermore, implications and recommendations are provided for sport management programs and institutions of higher education to address gendered structures and other systemic structures that disadvantage marginalized groups. These recommendations and implications are a starting point to aid programs in their efforts to retain, support, and recruit women sport management faculty.

Book Gender Tenure and the Pursuit of Work life family Stability

Download or read book Gender Tenure and the Pursuit of Work life family Stability written by Kristen E. Willmott and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to explore how female, tenure-track faculty navigate the process of balancing their personal and professional lives at a research-extensive "new Ivy" university. Female faculty underrepresentation in higher education is perpetuated by gender-based social and professional practices and roles. Existing research confirms gender disparities in faculty recruitment, retention, salary, tenure, and mentorship. Utilizing a qualitative phenomenological approach, this study examined the stories of nine purposely selected female, full-time tenure-track and tenured faculty as well as four administrators employed in faculty diversity, development, and work-life at a medium-sized, research-extensive "new Ivy" private university in the Northeastern United States. With a blended application of post-structuralist feminism and work-family border theoretical framework, this study expanded upon existing research by exploring gender norms, roles, and boundaries as experienced and interpreted by female faculty navigating their work, family, and community spheres of influence. This is the first known study to explore a "new Ivy" institution and there are no other known studies that incorporate both the qualitative perspectives of female faculty as well as those of the faculty diversity and development administrators who oversee and develop the very programs and policies that support those faculty. Modified analytic induction yielded five thematic findings: faculty support comes in many forms; seeking clarity in job elements and teaching, research, service (TRS) ratios; coping strategies in the wake of an overloaded TRS ratio; family borders in the academy, and work-life-family fit stability, not balance. This study recognized the importance of university-provided attainable faculty TRS ratios, faculty priority lines, and sacrifices for faculty work-life-family stability. This study's findings stimulate faculty gender norm consciousness and acknowledge and relay the unique challenges in faculty's pursuit of work-life-family stability, career path navigation, and role negotiation. This study offers faculty and administrator insight for the benefit of tenure-track faculty, their departments, their families, and higher education institutions at large. Findings may also better inform university and departmental policy planning and enhance institutional understanding and subsequent support in and of the faculty experience, and thus the experiences of the increasingly diverse students whom educational institutions aim to serve"--Pages ix-x

Book excerpt: Research has examined the experiences of women faculty in higher education. However, the experiences of non-faculty mid-level women administrators within higher education continues to be understudied. Women are often the majority in non-faculty positions, yet men dominate senior level positions. Instead, women are frequently clustered in entry and mid-level administrative roles within student affairs divisions or departments, often with limited access to career ladders. Drawing on the theoretical framework of gendered work organizations, this study explores the experiences of women working in non-academic departments, and analyzes how these experiences impact their career advancement at four-year public universities. More specifically, I examine workplace culture, elements of advancement, and student affairs as a helping profession as plausible factors that explain the disparate outcomes of non-faculty women working in higher education.

Book Examining the Experiences of Women Sport Management Faculty

Download or read book Examining the Experiences of Women Sport Management Faculty written by Hailey E. Daehnke and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Framed as an instrumental case study, the purpose of this investigation was to examine the challenges women face and the experiences that women have as faculty members in academia. Data was collected by using a qualitative in-depth semi-structured interview methodology. The women who were selected for this research are tenured or tenure-track faculty in sport management departments at a University in the Midwest. The data analysis consisted of unitizing the data, followed by coding the data in categories and themes. Feminist Standpoint Theory was utilized to help understand the experiences of the female faculty. This investigation found that female tenured or tenure-track faculty had several common experiences during their academic careers. All of the women discussed the importance of the institutional and departmental climate at the University. Additionally, they examined the marginalization they had felt from their students while teaching classes. Specifically, they cited many students questioned their knowledge about sport because they are female. Furthermore, the participants also discussed the challenges that came from work-life conflict. Each participant discussed the impact various mentor relationships had on them throughout their academic careers. Mentoring relationships were critical to those participants that had them as both students and current faculty members. Finally, the support mechanisms each faculty member used to benefit their career were examined, noting specifically the impact of conference attendance as both a means of professional and personal support.

Book Female Academic Department Chairs at a Public Very High Research Activity University

Download or read book Female Academic Department Chairs at a Public Very High Research Activity University written by Tamara Marcelle St. Marthe and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advancement of women into academic leadership remains a problem facing public, high-research activity universities. While there are more women who are qualified to assume the position of department chair in research institutions today than there were 30 years ago, women still lag behind their male counterparts in holding these academic leadership roles. The purpose of this study was to examine the personal and professional career experiences of women department chairs in a public, very high research activity institution, and to provide advice to women faculty seeking to become a department chair in the future. The department chair is among the most important academic administrators within any higher education institution, and the effectiveness of this leader is paramount to the overall success of their department. Historically males have occupied the majority of chair positions in research universities. Little is known about how women prepare for the position, why they are selected, and the challenges they face in becoming a department chair. The research design involved using a qualitative case study, which employed purposeful sampling methods. Eight current female department chairs, four college deans who were familiar with the chairs' appointment, and one provost from State University, a public, very high research activity university were selected to participate in the study. Face-to-face, open-ended interviews were employed as the primary source of data; however, additional documents were analyzed to corroborate the interview data and enrich the study. The research questions in this inquiry focused on four specific areas, which included: (a) knowledge, training, experience, and skills required to become a department chair in a public, four-year institution; (b) strategies used to obtain the position; (c) gender-based challenges faced by the women chairs; and (d) advice for aspiring female academic department chairs. The study's findings indicated that the women chairs possessed important academic and administrative leadership experience and interpersonal skills, and encountered unique challenges in their advancement to the position. The study's participants also offered advice for future women department chairs with regard to understanding the roles, responsibilities, and challenges related to the position of department chair, as well as professional preparation for the position.
