Book Agrarian Justice

Download or read book Agrarian Justice written by Thomas Paine and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tom Paine's 'Agrarian Justice' (1797) continues to inspire progressive politicians today as a source of two contemporary policies, Land Value Taxation and Universal (Basic) Income (Citizen's Income). His starting point was the belief, widespread until the end of the eighteenth century, that the Earth is the common property of humankind. Rather than advocating the common ownership of land, he proposed that landowners 'owe to the community a ground-rent', the market rent of their land. He advocated that this be paid into a fund to be used for the benefit of all, both as a lump sum payment on reaching adulthood and as a pension for older people. He is well worth reading for his passion and rhetoric. This publication also includes a riposte written in the same year by Thomas Spence, who had published a similar but more radical proposal in 1776. It also contains a 20th century re-statement of individual and common rights to the Earth and a summary of the relevance of Agrarian Justice today.

Book Adam Smith s Discourse

Download or read book Adam Smith s Discourse written by Vivienne Brown and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adam Smith's name has become synonymous with free market economics; The Wealth of Nations is taken as the definitive account of the benefits of free competitive markets. Yet recent scholarship has challenged this view and given us a richer, more nuanced figure, steeped in the intricacies of enlightenment social and political philosophy. Adam Smith's Discourse both develops this literature and gives it a radical new extension by taking into account recent debates in literary theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memoirs of Emma Courtney (1796) is a novel by English writer and feminist Mary Hays. Inspired by events from her own life, as well as by her acquaintance with radical political philosophers William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft, Hays’s novel received mixed reviews and was controversial for its representation of female sexuality, adultery, infanticide, and suicide. Modern critics and readers, however, have recognized the novel as a groundbreaking work of feminist fiction. In a series of letters to her adopted son Augustus Harley, Emma Courtney reveals the tragic details of her life. Young and in love with Augustus’s father, Courtney dreamed of marrying him and starting a family. Despite their true connection, Harley is unable to marry—his continued income is only guaranteed, he claims, if he remains a bachelor. Meanwhile, a man named Mr. Montague promises Courtney a life of safety and financial stability if she will agree to marry him, which, after learning that Harley has secretly been married all along, she does. Heartbroken, Courtney settles for a life with her new husband, and raising her daughter becomes her only cause for passion. When she realizes the extent of Mr. Montague’s dishonesty, however, she struggles to reconcile her former sense of individuality with the life she has been forced to live. When Harley suddenly reappears, however, feelings from the past return that threaten to flood Courtney’s heart and overturn what stability she thought had been her own. Memoirs of Emma Courtney is an epistolary novel exploring themes of desire, inequality, and the love that transcends the values and bonds of society. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Mary Hays’s Memoirs of Emma Courtney is a classic of English literature reimagined for modern readers.

Book Hazlitt on English Literature

Download or read book Hazlitt on English Literature written by William Hazlitt and published by anboco. This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present selection of Hazlitt's critical essays has been planned to serve two important purposes. In the first place it provides the materials for an estimate of the character and scope of Hazlitt's contributions to criticism and so acquaints students with one of the greatest of English critics. And in the second place, what is perhaps more important, such a selection, embodying a series of appreciations of the great English writers, should prove helpful in the college teaching of literature. There is no great critic who by his readableness and comprehensiveness is as well qualified as Hazlitt to aid in bringing home to students the power and the beauty of the essential things in literature. There is, in him a splendid stimulating energy which has not yet been sufficiently utilized. The contents have been selected and arranged to present a chronological and almost continuous account of English literature from its beginning in the age of Elizabeth down to Hazlitt's own day, the period of the romantic revival. To the more strictly critical essays there have been added a few which reveal Hazlitt's intimate intercourse with books and also with their writers, whether he knew them in the flesh or only through the printed page. Such vivid revelations of personal contact contribute much to further the chief aim of this volume, which is to introduce the reader to a direct and spontaneous view of literature...: Chronology of Hazlitt's Life and Writings Introduction The Age of Elizabeth Spenser Shakspeare The Characters of Shakspeare's Plays Cymbeline Macbeth Iago Hamlet Romeo and Juliet Midsummernight's Dream Falstaff Twelfth Night Milton Pope On the Periodical Essayists The English Novelists Character of Mr. Burke Mr. Wordsworth Mr. Coleridge Mr. Southey Elia Sir Walter Scott Lord Byron On Poetry in General My First Acquaintance With Poets On the Conversation of Authors Of Persons One Would Wish To Have Seen On Reading Old Books

Book Writings of Thomas Paine

Download or read book Writings of Thomas Paine written by Thomas Paine and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An anthology of writings from Thomas Paine, including "Common Sense," "African Slavery in America," "An Occasional Letter on the Female Sex," "Agrarian Justice," "The Rights of Man," and "The Age of Reason." Paine's radical views on the abolition of slavery, the emancipation of women, the redistribution of wealth and social equality, and religion, made him an outcast even among his fellow American Revolutionaries. Even today, he remains the only major figure of the American Revolution who has no monument anywhere in Washington DC.
