Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conspiracy in the United States: Navy Department Against Franklin W. Smith of Boston, 1861-1865 "Mr. Franklin W. Smith is a well-known merchant of the city of Boston. Boston is the principal city of Massachusetts.Massachusetts is the principal State of New England. New England governs the United States for the present. The United States compose a country distinguished as the patron of justice, and the paradise of free principles. This is the 19th century. "All these facts must be carefully borne in mind, lest any one should imagine that it is a romance which forms the subject of this article. "We have before us a pamphlet of sixty-one pages, being the report of a special committee of the Boston Board of Trade, which vouches for the truth of the story it contains. The statements in the pamphlet are signed by the following names: W. B. Spooner, Charles G. Nazro, Charles O. Whitmore, Otis Norcross, James C. Converse, Joseph M. Wightman, Lorenzo Sabine. These will be recognized by many as the names of highly respectable merchants in the said city of Boston, State of Massachusetts aforesaid. They are men of truth and veracity." "Mr. Sumner and the Board of Trade make it clear enough that Mr. Smith was the victim of persecution on the part of the government officials." "Let us find a lesson in all this. The Boston Board of Trade has done well to print such a pamphlet." "Reparation can never be made for these wrongs. The national debt doubled would not suffice to make due return. Money can never do it." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Civil War Diary of Gideon Welles Lincoln s Secretary of the Navy

Download or read book The Civil War Diary of Gideon Welles Lincoln s Secretary of the Navy written by Gideon Welles and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 881 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gideon Welles’s 1861 appointment as secretary of the navy placed him at the hub of Union planning for the Civil War and in the midst of the powerful personalities vying for influence in Abraham Lincoln’s cabinet. Although Welles initially knew little of naval matters, he rebuilt a service depleted by Confederate defections, planned actions that gave the Union badly needed victories in the war’s early days, and oversaw a blockade that weakened the South’s economy. Perhaps the hardest-working member of the cabinet, Welles still found time to keep a detailed diary that has become one of the key documents for understanding the inner workings of the Lincoln administration. In this new edition, William E. and Erica L. Gienapp have restored Welles’s original observations, gleaned from the manuscript diaries at the Library of Congress and freed from his many later revisions, so that the reader can experience what he wrote in the moment. With his vitriolic pen, Welles captures the bitter disputes over strategy and war aims, lacerates colleagues from Secretary of State William H. Seward to General-in-Chief Henry Halleck, and condemns the actions of the self-serving southern elite he sees as responsible for the war. He just as easily waxes eloquent about the Navy's wartime achievements, extols the virtues of Lincoln, and drops in a tidbit of Washington gossip. Carefully edited and extensively annotated, this edition contains a wealth of supplementary material. The appendixes include short biographies of the members of Lincoln’s cabinet, the retrospective Welles wrote after leaving office covering the period missing from the diary proper, and important letters regarding naval matters and international law.

Seven Union regiments called the city home during the war. While no major engagement took place in St. Augustine, the city is filled with Civil War history, from supporting the Confederacy to accepting Union generals as respected residents. Book excerpt: “Help[s] readers to examine this period in history with a more cultural perspective than other books have . . . clear, concise, and crisp . . . fascinating” (San Francisco Book Review). • During the final days of the war, some Richmond citizens would throw “Starvation Parties,” soirees at which elegantly attired guests gathered amid the finest silver and crystal tableware, though there were usually no refreshments except water. • Union Rear-Admiral Goldsborough was nicknamed “Old Guts,” not so much for his combativeness as for his heft—weighing about three hundred pounds, he was described as “a huge mass of inert matter.” • 30.6 percent of the 425 Confederate generals, but only 21.6 percent of the 583 Union generals, had been lawyers before the war. • In 1861, J.P. Morgan made a huge profit by buying five thousand condemned US Army carbines and selling them back to another arsenal—taking the army to court when they tried to refuse to pay for the faulty weapons. • Major General Loring was reputed to have so rich a vocabulary that one of the men remarked he could “curse a cannon up hill without horses.” • Many militia units had a favorite drink—the Charleston Light Dragoons’ punch took around a week to make, while the Chatham Artillery required a pound of green tea leaves be steeped overnight. • There were five living former presidents when the Civil War began, and seven veterans of the war, plus one draft dodger, went on to serve as president. These stories and many more can be found in this treasury of anecdotes, essays, trivia, and much more—including numerous illustrations—that bring this historical period to vivid life.
