The present generation has not been an exception in regard to the importance attached to these fundamental questions. Rather, in this respect it has set a new highwater mark. For while the fifth century is generally regarded as the golden age of christological controversy, yet, from the point of view of the number and variety of the scholars interested and of the individuality and diversity of the results reached, the last half century has had no parallel in the history of Christianity.
