Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Consciousness of Jesus Christ that the evangel was uttered, but, rather, that men should receive Christ and live into his conscious being, as he in the house of his humanity lived into the con scious life of the Father. A too great ex bibit of the detail of the earthly walk of Jesus would have defeated the exclusive ends of that which was written that, read ing, we might believe, and that, believing, we might be saved. A strictly scientific study of the consciousness of Jesus would fall short of the ends at which we aim. Every thoughtful student of modern-day theological literature has noted the too fre quent absence of both the spirit and the letter Of subjective inquiry from the methods of criticism. The critics have contented themselves with examining the aspects of the Old and New Testament Scriptures rather than looking deeply into the spirit and pur pose of their writers. Stress is laid upon his torical accidents, textual peculiarities and difficulties, rather than upon the tremendous facts symbolized by, and latent in, the writ ings, whose peculiarities and difficulties are. Book Christ and the Eastern Soul

Download or read book Christ and the Eastern Soul written by Charles Cuthbert Hall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ and the Eastern Soul: The Witness of the Oriental Consciousness, to Jesus Christ Mrs. Haskell's idea in founding the Barrows Lec tures in India was a noble one. With broad catholicity Of spirit she recognised the essential truth which is common to all forms Of religious thought, and realised that men are prone to quarrel about diversities rather than to rejoice in the elements Of unity. With this view it seemed to her that the essential Christian doctrines might well be presented to the acute Eastern mind in SO unpolemic and yet cogent a form as to win appreciation of their beauty and power far more than is possible from the customary preaching Of the gospel. The Indian is not a heathen, but is a man Of deep religious life and profound philosophy. He is worthy to be approached by a similar mind. Book The Psychology of Jesus

Download or read book The Psychology of Jesus written by Albert Wellman Hitchcock and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology of Jesus: A Study of the Development of His Self-Consciousness The standpoint from which this study is made is rather that of a layman than of a theologian, and the treatment of questions of theology is fuller and simpler in some places on that account. Each age must get at the truth through the forms of thought given into its keeping. Out of the inherited words and the old methods of approach, the student gathers up the essential truth in every sphere and recasts it in the newer and more familiar shapes of his day. The study of the psychological development of Jesus was assured from the time when in 1863 H. Holzmann asserted that Jesus did not claim to be the Messiah until after the episode at Caesarea Philippi. The battle-ground of criticism has been chosen in the realm of psychology of late, and scholarship is divided upon the question whether we are justified in treating the Gospels as of such historic value as to afford material for a psychology of Jesus. Book The Christ of History and of Experience Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Christ of History and of Experience Classic Reprint written by David William Forrest and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christ of History and of Experience During the four years that have elapsed since the publication of this book, the subject of which it treats - the problem raised by the union of the Historical and the Spiritual in Christianity - has come more and more into prominence. Modern critical theories as to the Gospel records are forcing the question to the front on its historical side; and its pressing theological interest, as attested by prevalent Hegelian and Ritschlian tendencies, has received a further illustration in the rise of the school of Religious Symbolism represented by the late Auguste Sabatier. In the discussion of this central problem for Christian faith to-day, perhaps some may find the line taken in these Lectures not unhelpful. It may be affirmed with confidence that no theory will long commend itself which is not primarily founded on a penetrative analysis of the self-consciousness of Jesus. The view adopted in the first Lecture, that our Lord abstained from uniting in prayer with His disciples, has been strongly contested by the late Professor Bruce. Book The Boyhood Consciousness of Christ

Download or read book The Boyhood Consciousness of Christ written by P. J. Temple and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boyhood Consciousness of Christ: A Critical Examination of Luke II. 49 Ever since Christianity presented itself for acceptance by mankind, questions of Christology have held a foremost place in religious research and discussion, and necessarily so, since the native and personality of the Author of a religion claiming to be ecumenical and exclusive compel the attentive study of men interested in religious thought and life. The present generation has not been an exception in regard to the importance attached to these fundamental questions. Rather, in this respect it has set a new highwater mark. For while the fifth century is generally regarded as the golden age of christological controversy, yet, from the point of view of the number and variety of the scholars interested and of the individuality and diversity of the results reached, the last half century has had no parallel in the history of Christianity. In these questions of Christology the ultimate determinant, the final test to which every student must come, is Christ's own mind as expressed in His words and in His manner of acting; everything that He says or does, either directly or indirectly to reveal His self-consciousness, is of the first importance; whatever be the method pursued in attempting a solution of a christological problem, one cannot evade the query, What did He say about Himself? Then, closely connected with the questions of His self-consciousness is that of its origin. When and how did it begin? Did He possess it from His earliest years? Or was there for Him, as for every normal child, a gradual unfolding of reason and of the consciousness of His relation to God? Or was it only in mature manhood, when on the threshold of His public career, that the consciousness of His mission and all that it implied flashed upon Him? Or was its coming rather like that of dawning day, at first dim, then steadily growing into fulness of light and culminating in the brilliant clarity of the noonday? Book The Doctrine of the Person of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Doctrine of the Person of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint written by H. R. Mackintosh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of the Person of Jesus Christ That there is a main stream, that the authors of the New Testament are eventually one in their view of Christ, with a unity which is powerful enough to absorb and subdue their differences Of interpretation, is not indeed to be lightheartedly assumed. But it is rendered ex tremely probable by the simple experimental fact that the Church has always found it possible to nourish her faith in the Redeemer from every part of the apostolic writings. Further, this natural presumption is vindicated by a closer scrutiny of the facts. Two certainties are shared in common by all New Testament writers: First, that the life and consciousness of Jesus was in form com pletely human; second, that this historic life, apprehended as instinct with the powers of redemption, is one with the life of God Himself. In Christ they find God personally present for our salvation from sin and death. Yet in spite or rather because of this basal agreement it is the more impressive to contemplate the sovereign freedom with which they surveyed Christ, telling what they saw in books which have been quite justly described as literature, not dogma. Each looked at Jesus with his own eyes; each Spoke out of his own mind; and to force their words about Him into a mechanical and external harmony is simply to misconceive the genius of Christian faith. Book The Christ Is Not a Person

Download or read book The Christ Is Not a Person written by J. C. Tefft and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-02 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are we born? For what purpose are we here? The longer we remain unaware of what is taking place within us of what drives us and what can liberate us from the bonds of egocentric behavior the longer we allow what the Buddha called the sorrow of life to hold sway. The sorrow of life is the sum and consequence of our total identification with the world that is created by self. The word Consciousness means something more than what the mind of self thinks, imagines, or conceives. Awareness in Pure Consciousness is an awareness that is other than self and beyond thought. Contrary to traditional thinking, the so-called unseen, unknown world is nothing more than Consciousness of which we are unaware. Unawareness in Consciousness has been evolving into Awareness in Consciousness since before time began. The author of this work comprehensively sets forth a meaning of ancient scripture that likely has not been advanced to you before. He demystifies ancient legends and myths so the essential truth of ancient teachings shines through. Using ancient scripture as a guide, he insightfully explores a growing conscious awareness that has been emerging within mankind over the last few thousand years. A must read for anyone looking to discover the deeper meaning of ancient scripture beyond a literal interpretation of the words.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Science: The Gospel of the Kingdom The Founder of the Christian religion referred to his message as the gospel of the kingdom; and of this kingdom of heaven or kingdom of God he said much in parables but several things explicitly. He said it is at hand (that is to say, it is present and within reach); he said it is within you (which is to say, it is a state of consciousness); and he said it comes upon you as devils or evils are cast out. Heaven, therefore, is not the sequence of death; it is an active state of goodness. It is gained by over coming evil; not by dying, but by right living. The kingdom of heaven is the consciousness of good. It is the reign of Life, Truth, and Love in man. We'are in heaven here and now to the extent that we realize the actual qualities of true being.
