Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conquest of Fear: A Jewish Science View-Point N 0 good purpose has ever been served by disturb ing the nerves of our little ones with the emotion of fear. A child, for example, may suffer more from the fear of a fall than from the fall itself. While it is true that the early steps of a child must be watched, and its early experiences guided, yet a guardianship based on the instilling of fear into the young soul, is far more harmful than any baleful experience which the unguarded child may en counter. It is seldom that an accident befalls a child through its own lack of care or experience; the instinct for self-preservation works strongly and unconsciously from the very earliest stages of childhood. God has created His creatures with the necessary provisions for the protection of life. Many of the bumps, both actual and figurative, which the child receives, are nature's method of gently preparing the child for the greater hard ships, the heavier blows that she may ask him to encounter adequately later in life. And yet we see mothers endlessly warning their children not to jump, not to run, lest they fall; not to do this, not to do that, lest they be hurt, subduing the child with the fear of hurtful consequences, and crippling their development by barring them from necessary experiences. The child will not be hurt by countless falls, but the fear of the fall which has been bred into him, will leave an indelible and hurtful impress upon his nervous organism. It is God's intent that man be free from fear, and it is therefore that the soft babe from the day of its birth, is filled with trustfulness, and is free from fear and forebodings; but man, it seems, refuses to trust himself to higher forces, and prefers to harbor fear for himself and transmit it to his posterity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conquest of Fear When I say that during most of my conscious life I have been a prey to fears I take it for granted that I am expressing the case of the majority of people. I cannot remember the time when a dread of one kind or another was not in the air. In childhood it was the fear of going to bed, of that mysterious time when regular life was still going on downstairs, while I was buried alive under sheets and blankets. Later it was the fear of school, the first contact of the tender little soul with life's crudeness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: It is 1915. Jean Dartemont is just a young man. He is not a rebel, but neither is he awed by authority and when he's called up and given only the most rudimentary training, he refuses to follow his platoon. Instead, he is sent to Artois, where he experiences the relentless death and violence of the trenches. His reprieve finally comes when he is wounded, evacuated and hospitalised. The nurses consider it their duty to stimulate the soldiers' fighting spirit, and so ask Jean what he did at the front. His reply? 'I was afraid.' First published in France in 1930, Fear is both graphic and clear-eyed in its depiction of the terrible experiences of soldiers during the First World War.

Book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book Conquest of the Useless

Download or read book Conquest of the Useless written by Werner Herzog and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most revered filmmakers of our time, Werner Herzog wrote this diary during the making of Fitzcarraldo, the lavish 1982 film that tells the story of a would-be rubber baron who pulls a steamship over a hill in order to access a rich rubber territory. Later, Herzog spoke of his difficulties when making the film, including casting problems, reshoots, language barriers, epic clashes with the star, and the logistics of moving a 320-ton steamship over a hill without the use of special effects. Hailed by critics around the globe, the film went on to win Herzog the 1982 Outstanding Director Prize at Cannes. Conquest of the Useless, Werner Herzog's diary on his fever dream in the Amazon jungle, is an extraordinary glimpse into the mind of a genius during the making of one of his greatest achievements.

Book excerpt: The strangeness of the title of this work, "The Conquest of Death," will doubtless prompt some, into whose hands it may chance to fall, to lay it down without reading; for the conquest of death, they say, is impossible. Yet, who knows if it be so or not? The author of this work has discovered that the conquest of death is altogether within the law, and has sought herein to give some reasons for her belief, which she knows to be worthy of the highest consideration of all the people.
