Book excerpt: Surely the reader had come across situations where he would have given his life to get the “final answer”, the reason for our existence, a Theory of Everything, a true World Formula that contains it all... So did the author of this book. There was this deep-seated and forever unquenchable thirst for fundamental explanations on the one hand, and then there was this very special motivation from somebody else who needed this knowledge, on the other: “How to explain the world to my dying child?” Perhaps this provided the driving force to actually start this million-mile-long journey with the first small—and very tentative—step. Considering all the efforts taken, money spent, disputes fought, papers and books written, and conferences held, it is almost shocking to find that, in principle, the World Formula was already there. It was David Hilbert who wrote it down during World War I in November 1915. The complexity of the math involved was not the only thing that obscured what should have been obvious. This book explains why apparently only very few people had realized his immortal stroke of genius.

Book An SO 3 Monopole Cobordism Formula Relating Donaldson and Seiberg Witten Invariants

Download or read book An SO 3 Monopole Cobordism Formula Relating Donaldson and Seiberg Witten Invariants written by Paul Feehan and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors prove an analogue of the Kotschick–Morgan Conjecture in the context of monopoles, obtaining a formula relating the Donaldson and Seiberg–Witten invariants of smooth four-manifolds using the -monopole cobordism. The main technical difficulty in the -monopole program relating the Seiberg–Witten and Donaldson invariants has been to compute intersection pairings on links of strata of reducible monopoles, namely the moduli spaces of Seiberg–Witten monopoles lying in lower-level strata of the Uhlenbeck compactification of the moduli space of monopoles. In this monograph, the authors prove—modulo a gluing theorem which is an extension of their earlier work—that these intersection pairings can be expressed in terms of topological data and Seiberg–Witten invariants of the four-manifold. Their proofs that the -monopole cobordism yields both the Superconformal Simple Type Conjecture of Moore, Mariño, and Peradze and Witten's Conjecture in full generality for all closed, oriented, smooth four-manifolds with and odd appear in earlier works.

Book A Product Formula for Surgery Obstructions

Download or read book A Product Formula for Surgery Obstructions written by John W. Morgan and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1978 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given a degree one normal map and a closed manifold one can form their product. The result is another degree one normal map. In this paper we calculate the surgery obstruction of the product in terms of the obstruction of the original normal map and invariants of the closed manifold provided that the latter is simply connected. The result depends on the congruence class module 4 of the dimension of the closed manifold.

Book Physical Problems Solved by the Phase Integral Method

Download or read book Physical Problems Solved by the Phase Integral Method written by Nanny Fröman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-06-13 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a thorough introduction to one of the most efficient approximation methods for the analysis and solution of problems in theoretical physics and applied mathematics. It is written with practical needs in mind and contains a discussion of 50 problems with solutions, of varying degrees of difficulty. The problems are taken from quantum mechanics, but the method has important applications in any field of science involving second order ordinary differential equations. The power of the asymptotic solution of second order differential equations is demonstrated, and in each case the authors clearly indicate which concepts and results of the general theory are needed to solve a particular problem. This book will be ideal as a manual for users of the phase-integral method, as well as a valuable reference text for experienced research workers and graduate students.

Book Lectures on Quantum Mechanics

Download or read book Lectures on Quantum Mechanics written by Ashok Das and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2012-01-27 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This set of lecture notes on quantum mechanics aims to teach, in a simple and straightforward manner, the basic theory behind the subject, drawing on examples from all fields of physics to provide both background as well as context. The self-contained book includes a review of classical mechanics and some of the necessary mathematics. Both the standard fare of quantum mechanics texts — the harmonic oscillator, the hydrogen atom, angular momentum as well as topics such as symmetry with a discussion on periodic potentials, the relativistic electron, spin and scattering theory are covered. Approximation methods are discussed with a view to applications; these include stationary perturbation theory, the WKB approximation, time dependent perturbations and the variational principle. Together, the seventeen chapters provide a very comprehensive introduction to quantum mechanics. Selected problems are collected at the end of each chapter in addition to the numerous exercises sprinkled throughout the text. The book is written in a simple and elegant style, and is characterized by clarity, depth and excellent pedagogical organization.

The manuscript takes a look at shape operators, geometry of surfaces in E, and Riemannian geometry. Concerns include geometric surfaces, covariant derivative, curvature and conjugate points, Gauss-Bonnet theorem, fundamental equations, global theorems, isometries and local isometries, orthogonal coordinates, and integration and orientation. The text is a valuable reference for students interested in elementary differential geometry.

Book Following the Formula in Beowulf rvar Odds saga and Tolkien

Download or read book Following the Formula in Beowulf rvar Odds saga and Tolkien written by Michael Fox and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-21 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the Formula in Beowulf, Örvar-Odds saga, and Tolkien proposes that Beowulf was composed according to a formula. Michael Fox imagines the process that generated the poem and provides a model for reading it, extending this model to investigate formula in a half-line, a fitt, a digression, and a story-pattern or folktale, including the Old-Norse Icelandic Örvar-Odds saga. Fox also explores how J. R. R. Tolkien used the same formula to write Sellic Spell and The Hobbit. This investigation uncovers relationships between oral and literate composition, between mechanistic composition and author, and between listening and reading audiences, arguing for a contemporary relevance for Beowulf in thinking about the creative process.
