Book Status of the Connecticut Warbler in British Columbia

Download or read book Status of the Connecticut Warbler in British Columbia written by John Morton Cooper and published by Wildlife Branch. This book was released on 1997 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Connecticut warbler (Oporornis agilis) is an uncommon, forest-interior, neotropical migrant that is locally distributed in the boreal plains and taiga plains ecoprovinces of British Columbia. Due to its low populations, restricted distribution, and threats to habitat, the species is listed as a candidate for threatened or endangered status. This report describes the general biology of this warbler, its habitat and distribution, population size and trends, legal protection status, factors limiting growth and spreading of the warbler population, and the special significance of the species in British Columbia. The report concludes with recommendations and management options to protect the province's Connecticut warbler population.

Book Vulture

    Book Details:
  • Author : Katie Fallon
  • Publisher : University Press of New England
  • Release : 2017-03-07
  • ISBN : 151260030X
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Vulture written by Katie Fallon and published by University Press of New England. This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turkey vultures, the most widely distributed and abundant scavenging birds of prey on the planet, are found from central Canada to the southern tip of Argentina, and nearly everywhere in between. In the United States we sometimes call them buzzards; in parts of Mexico the name is aura cabecirroja, in Uruguay jote cabeza colorada, and in Ecuador gallinazo aura. A huge bird, the turkey vulture is a familiar sight from culture to culture, in both hemispheres. But despite being ubiquitous and recognizable, the turkey vulture has never had a book of literary nonfiction devoted to it - until Vulture. Floating on six-foot wings, turkey vultures use their keen senses of smell and sight to locate carrion. Unlike their cousin the black vulture, turkey vultures do not kill weak or dying animals; instead, they cleanse, purify, and renew the environment by clearing it of decaying carcasses, thus slowing the spread of such dangerous pathogens as anthrax, rabies, and botulism. The beauty, grace, and important role of these birds in the ecosystem notwithstanding, turkey vultures are maligned and underappreciated; they have been accused of spreading disease and killing livestock, neither of which has ever been substantiated. Although turkey vultures are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which makes harming them a federal offense, the birds still face persecution. They've been killed because of their looks, their odor, and their presence in proximity to humans. Even the federal government occasionally sanctions "roost dispersals," which involve the harassment and sometimes the murder of communally roosting vultures during the cold winter months. Vulture follows a year in the life of a typical North American turkey vulture. By incorporating information from scientific papers and articles, as well as interviews with world-renowned raptor and vulture experts, author Katie Fallon examines all aspects of the bird's natural history: breeding, incubating eggs, raising chicks, migrating, and roosting. After reading this book you will never look at a vulture in the same way again.

  • Author : William Rapai
  • Publisher : University of Michigan Press
  • Release : 2012-02-08

Download or read book The Kirtland s Warbler written by William Rapai and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2012-02-08 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the Kirtland’s warbler and wildlife conservation in a way that no other book has. It looks back on the history of this unique bird, examines the people and policies that kept the warbler from extinction, explores the cult of personality that surrounds it, and examines the challenges of the future—all through the eyes of the people who have acted so passionately on its behalf. The story of the Kirtland’s warbler is a story of complex relationships between the bird and its environment, the humans who interact with it, and the complex government policies that affect it. And now, just when it appears that the Kirtland’s warbler has recovered for good, a change in its status may send the warbler’s population into a downward spiral once again.

Book excerpt: Known to many as "the butterflies of the bird world," wood warblers allure even the most experienced and discriminating birders. Their annual migrations to and from nesting areas in the United States and Canada draw thousands of birders to places such as High Island, Texas; Crane Creek, Ohio; and Point Pelee, Ontario, where warblers stop to rest and feed during the long journey. There birders have a chance to see and photograph these colorful, elusive songbirds whose quick, darting flight among high branches and thick cover makes them some of the most challenging birds to observe and identify. In this entertaining, beautifully illustrated book, Bob Thornton recounts his and Vera Thornton's cross-continent adventures in finding and photographing all 52 species of wood warblers that nest in the United States. In addition to describing where and how they photographed each species, Thornton tells marvelous stories of the colorful characters they encountered along the way. He also touches on the current human threats to wood warblers that come from loss of habitat.
