Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Congregational Year-Book: For the Year 1857 Gents z - It is now a year since the Plymouth Collection was introduced into use by the Clinton Avenue Congregation for the public worship of God on the Sabbath, and the occasional religious services held in the chapel during the week, and it affords me pleasure to say that it has not only met the expectations which led to its introduction, but that it has been growing in favor with the people, as they have become better acquainted with its peculiar excellences. In making my selections for the pulpit, I have been frequently im pressed with the fullness of the Collection on the main evangelical themes, and the high poetic beauty of a large class of the hymns. It is particularly rich in the expression it affords of christian emotion, covering a wide range of experience, and giving utterance to the deepest and most peculiar feelings of the christian heart. There is a large number of hymns, of the highest value for spiritual uses, to be found in no other collection and no minister or people, after learning their value, could be induced to resign them. The book has also sensibly promoted the practice of Congregational Singing, and so comprehensive is the collection, that, after all abatements are made, which any reasonable criticism could require, there remains enough to which the most fastidious taste cannot object. In a word, ounexperience for a year has served to make the Plymouth Collection a favorite in public and in private; and no one Wishes a change. It is also no small commendation, that the book is typographically so beautiful, and attractive to the eye. Additional lectures on Preaching and other important subjects are delivered before all the classes by eminent ministers and scholars in this country and Europe. There are also Optional classes conducted by the Professors, in New Testament Introduction, German, Syriac, and Chaldee. Once a week there is a rhetorical exercise for all the classes. Instruction in vocal culture and elocution is continued through the entire course. Sacred music is taught to those who desire it. The Libraries of the University, to which the students have access, including the Reference Library of the Divinity School, contain nearly volumes. The Hooker Fellowship, for the encouragement of further theological study in this country or abroad, the income of which is $700 a year for two years after graduation, is open to the class entering in 1880. Expenses. - There is no charge for instruction, use of libraries, or room rent. The rooms, which will accommodate 150 students, are designed in general for only one occupant. Each room has a bedroom attached and is carpeted and furnished with all needful furniture except bedclothing. The chief expenses for the session are for board, an average Of a week, fuel and light, $25 to $30, and $10 a year for care of room and incidental expenses. Scholarship Funds and other Aid. -students whose circumstances require it are aided to the amount of $5100 a year, from the income of scholarship funds. Additional aid to the amount of $75 to $100 is afforded by the American Educa tion Society to its beneficiaries. Commencement of the Term. - The next annual term of study will begin on Thursday, Sept. 16, 1880, and continue till the third Thursday in May, when the vacation of four months, in which the students have the Opportunity to engage in some form of remunerative labor, will commence.
