Book The Conflict of Ideals in the English Church

Download or read book The Conflict of Ideals in the English Church written by W. H. Griffith Smith and published by . This book was released on 2016-12-29 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the President of your Wycliffe Association called me up about four weeks ago and wished to have a talk on the subject of this evening's address, I suggested to him the possibility of taking for consideration some of the aspects of the Church in the Old Country, and some of the lessons that might possibly be drawn from those aspects for ourselves in Canada. Of course I am well aware that in many ways the conditions in England are altogether different from those in Canada, but at the same time I think it worth our while to study them, and then to endeavour our utmost to see what they mean for us over here.Well, gentlemen, I am, of course, not concerned to-night with those ordinary, matter-of-fact matters that relate to parochial life. The every-day and every-week work of a parish in the Old Country is pretty much the same as it is here. There are the Sun day services and the week day meetings, there is the preaching of the Gospel, the teaching in Sunday School, there are Bible Classes and so on. There is a great deal going on in hundreds and thousands of Parishes of which the world knows nothing, though God Himself knows a great deal. But what I am concerned with to-night, and what really concerns us as members of the Canadian Church, is to consider some of the things that stand out in English Church life, things that are seen in our papers, that are being considered by the authorities, that exercise a marked influence one way or another, and certainly cause a great deal of anxiety. Some twenty years ago, Canon Knox Little, a well-known member of the extreme section of the Church of England, wrote a book entitled, "The Conflict of Ideals in the Church of England," and he endeavored to state as plainly as he could the different sets of ideals that actuate Churchmen, by whatever names they are known. That conflict of ideals has not decreased during the years since the book was written. On the contrary, I believe it is more acute than ever, and it is this in particular that I wish to mention to-night, to illustrate and prove it to you, and then, if I may, to draw a few morals for ourselves.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conflict of Ideals in the English Church Some months ago a well-known Congregational Minister, Dr. Horton, of Hampstead, London, was summoned for libel, because he happened to say in the Daily News that a certain weekly paper was used in the interests of Roman Catholicism. Dr. Horton was summoned for libel for making out that paper to be Roman Catholic when it was not. The Doctor founded his opinion upon the statement of a regular contributor, and when he read it he took it for granted that the paper must be Roman Catholic. He was proved to be erroneous, that it only represented the extreme men of the English Church. Dr. Horton was not fined; he was tochni cally in the wrong, but was awarded the case. Well, now, this was the part of the paper on which Dr. Horton founded h'm judgment. This is the article, or part of the article by the regular contributor I cursed the Protestant Reformation then with heart and soul, and stilldoicurseitandhateitanddetestitwithallitsworhand inallitssbominableoperstions, internalandexternal. I loathe it, abhor it, as the most hideous blasphemy, the greatest woe, the most monstrous horror which has fallen upu the haple race of mortals since the foundation of the world. When the editor was asked in Court about it, he said he did not regard it as offen sive. I would ask you to consider whether you think it was not pretty natural that Dr. Horton should assume that it came from Rome. I am not surprised that 'e made a mistake. I should have thought that a man who all -l himself to say those words wasprettyfugoneinthebomanjrectiombutheclaimedtobe a member of the Church of England. That shows the extent of the conflict of ideals on the subject. I have in my possession a manual called A Book for the Children of God, a little book of instruo tion for young people, and they are taught almost in these very words: The Holy Ghost makes his home in the. Catholic Church, He does not make His home with dissenters; He may visit them from time to time, but they never know when He is coming. It is a serious fact, gentlemen, that this is being taught to scores andhundreds and thousands of young children in the Church of Eng land today; and no wonder people are saying it 'i impo-ible for bothhighchurchmenandevangelicalstoberight. Book Homosexuality and the Crisis of Anglicanism

Download or read book Homosexuality and the Crisis of Anglicanism written by William L. Sachs and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-08-13 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Anglican conflict over homosexuality has drawn worldwide interest and divided the church. However, conflict within Christianity is not new. This book traces the steps by which the crisis emerged, and reveals the deeper debates within the church which underlie both the current controversy and much earlier splits. William L. Sachs contends that the present debate did not begin with opposition to homosexuality or in advocacy of it. He argues that, like past tensions, it originates in the diverging local contexts in which the faith is practised, and their differing interpretations of authority and communion. In the aftermath of colonialism, activists and reformers have taken on prominent roles for and against the status quo. The crisis reveals a Church in search of a new, global consensus about the appropriate forms of belief and mission.

Book Predestination Policy and Polemic

Download or read book Predestination Policy and Polemic written by Peter White and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-04-18 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a major study of the theology of grace in the English Church between the Reformation and the Civil War. On the basis of a wide reading of both English and continental writings, the author challenges the prevailing view that there was essentially a 'Calvinist' consensus in the Elizabethan and Jacobean Church, and stresses instead an indigenous latitudinarianism of doctrine against which a concerted campaign was conducted in the last decade of the sixteenth century in the controversies which led to the Lambeth Articles. Mr White reviews the impact Arminian ideas had in England, firstly through a detailed exposition of the theology of Arminius, and subsequently by means of a review of the links between the English and Dutch churches as the quarrel between the Remonstrants and Contra-Remonstrants reached its climax in the Synod of Dort. Other chapters discuss the place of Hooker in English theology, the impact of Richard Montagu, the ideas of Thomas Jackson, the writings of Neile and Laud on predestination, and the regulation of doctrine in the period of Personal Rule. At all stages the theological debate is related to its political - and often polemical - context, not least in a carefully documented reassessment of the role of the court both in the last years of James' reign and in the early years of the rule of Charles I.

Book The Ideal of the Self Governing Church

Download or read book The Ideal of the Self Governing Church written by C. Peter Williams and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-05-18 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is part of current missiological orthodoxy that newly created churches should obtain independence from cross-cultural missionaries as soon as possible. It is not often realised that much Victorian missionary thinking shared that objective. This important new work examines the ideal of the self-governing church in the Victorian period through a study of the official mind of the Church Missionary Society. The study begins with an examination of Henry Venn's, the famous CMS Secretary, commitment to self-supporting, self-propagating and self-governing churches. Was he a lonely figure battling against the accepted wisdom of the mid-Victorian period? The author argues that he was not, and was, if anything a slightly conservative spokesman for much current wisdom. Far from his views being abandoned at his death, they were the accepted orthodoxy within CMS until the end of the century. Although they came under increasing attack in the nineties, it was not until the beginning of the twentieth century, particularly under the influence of Eugune Stock, that they were finally abandoned. The importance of this study lies not only in its ability to explain Victorian missionary development, but also because it takes on board the age-old issue of how quickly should a church become self-governing.

Download or read book The true Professional Ideal in America written by Bruce A. Kimball and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1996 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bruce A. Kimball attacks the widely held assumption that the idea of American "professionalism" arose from the proliferation of urban professional positions during the late nineteenth century. This first paperback edition of The "True Professional Ideal" in America argues that the professional ideal can be traced back to the colonial period. This comprehensive intellectual history illuminates the profound relationships between the idea of a "professional" and broader changes in American social, cultural, and political history.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Theology Sexuality and Gender

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Theology Sexuality and Gender written by Adrian Thatcher and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 737 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Theology, Sexuality, and Gender presents an unrivalled overview of the theological study of sexuality and gender. These topics are not merely contentious and pervasive: they have escalated in importance within theology. Theologians increasingly agree that even the very doctrine of God cannot be contemplated without a prior grappling with each. Featuring 41 newly-commissioned essays, written by some of the foremost scholars in the discipline, this authoritative collection presents and develops the latest thinking in these areas. Divided into eight thematic sections, the Handbook explores: methodological approaches; contributions from neighbouring disciplines; sexuality and gender in the Bible, and in the Christian tradition; controversies within the churches, and within four of the non-Christian faiths; and key concepts and issues. The final, extended section considers theology in relation to married people and families; gay and lesbian people; bisexual people; intersex and transgender people; disabled people; and to friends. This volume is an essential reference for students and scholars, which will also stimulate further research.
