Furthermore, the economic implications of technological changes on society are delineated in this essay. "Technological change includes any application of new ways of transforming resources into products or services. In the traditional sense of the word, technology means new machines -- lathes, presses, computers, and the like. But the concept can be expanded to include new techniques, whether or not they include new machines. From this perspective the work improvements method of scientific management can be considered technological breakthroughs" (Gibson, Ivancevich, Donnelly, Jr. & Konopaske, 2012, p. 488-516). We have all experienced an exorbitant amount of technological changes throughout the world and in the workplace as our global society strives to make the transition into becoming a type one civilization. A paradigm of an unprecedented technological breakthrough throughout the world has been the public release of the internet and the ubiquity of internet which has allowed customers to access it from virtually anywhere in the world. "Similarly to how electricity is now invisible, the internet is beginning to become transparent" (CUNYQueensborough, 2009). Customers can now access the internet through smart phones, smart televisions, smart watches, automobiles, and computers. Furthermore, without even realizing it, computers are advancing rapidly as Moore's Law foreshadowed. "Moore's Law states that the number of transistors on a chip will double approximately every two years" ("Moore's law inspires,"). "Proof of this law becoming a reality is the fact that something as trivial as a birthday card with a built in chip has more processing power than every computer combined throughout NASA in the decade of the 1940s. Another example of this is the fact that a mobile phone has well over 300,000 times the processing power than computers built in the 1940s" (CUNYQueensborough, 2009). Also, the increased prevalence of automated machines and robots designed to complete specific tasks, such as kitchen robots and industrial robots, have made the workplace a far more productive environment with decreased stressors for the organization's remaining workforce. The continuous advancements in technologically will render the world a far more productive place and likely allow our global civilization to transition into become a type three civilization in at least the next 5,800 years (Kaku). Ultimately, technological advancements have ushered in profound beneficial changes in the digital era that have allowed brands to minimize inefficiencies, bolster the productivity of their workforce, decrease operating expenses, and maximize productivity. The proliferation of more technological advancements and changes will have profound implications on the economy and will ultimately lead to an increase in the standard of living coupled with a decrease in the cost of living as more business operations are outsourced to robots and automated processes. The continuous displacement of workforce participants with robots and automated processes could possibly draw forth a universal basic guaranteed income as economic productivity is maximized without the need for human labor.

The purpose of this book is to provide some of that understanding. The subject is so enormous and so intertwined with every human activity that a small selection of it, and that from a special viewpoint, is inevitable. The selection of subject matter has been, of course, conditioned by what interests me and is somewhat heterogeneous. However, it is connected by two major themes. The first is that it emphasizes the dynamic nature of technology, in the sense that it must be approached as a process evolving in time that can often be described in quantitative terms. The second is that I have chosen topics that I believe are essential for a strategic sense of how to plan for, execute, and respond to technological change. These two themes complement each other because the strategic sense requires an appreciation of the dynamics and the dynamics naturally lead to a consideration of how to deal with technology so that it can be used to achieve human objectives. The unifying thought behind the book is that technological change has a systemic as well as an idiosyncratic aspect.

Meanwhile, overall productivity increases steadily and new technology has transformed large parts of the economy, enhancing the skills and paychecks of higher paid knowledge workers. What’s wrong with this picture? Why have so many workers benefited so little from decades of growth? The Work of the Future shows that technology is neither the problem nor the solution. We can build better jobs if we create institutions that leverage technological innovation and also support workers though long cycles of technological transformation. Building on findings from the multiyear MIT Task Force on the Work of the Future, the book argues that we must foster institutional innovations that complement technological change. Skills programs that emphasize work-based and hybrid learning (in person and online), for example, empower workers to become and remain productive in a continuously evolving workplace. Industries fueled by new technology that augments workers can supply good jobs, and federal investment in R&D can help make these industries worker-friendly. We must act to ensure that the labor market of the future offers benefits, opportunity, and a measure of economic security to all.
