Book The Concept of Consciousness Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Concept of Consciousness Classic Reprint written by Edwin B. Holt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Concept of Consciousness Clearly the present volume will not aim to be a system. But it does profess not to forget the initial quest of philosophy, and toward this goal it seeks to indicate some little way of advance. Its scope is limited, for it proposes only to give a consistent account, a definition, of one very common yet perplexing feature of the universe - consciousness. Of course, this has been defined many times before, and much discussed, yet so often without consistency and so strikingly without agreement that the last word, very obviously, has by no means been said. Book The Concept of Consciousness

Download or read book The Concept of Consciousness written by Edwin B. Holt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Concept of Consciousness In view of the diversity of philosophical essays a writer may well at once say something of his purpose, and of what the human interest of his effort is to be. Pragmatically speaking, one seems to distinguish two kinds of philosophers. There are on the one hand those who, looking on the world about them, the folded earth and the brave canopy of heaven, desire to account for all this and to see behind the maddening variety that unity which something prompts them to believe is there. So sane and wholesome seems this desire, so proper as a philosophic aim, that one could wish all lovers of knowledge passionately possessed of it. But on the other hand one beholds the high pontiffs of philosophy, builders of massive systems, constructing their edifices not as a frugally devised and modest housing for the data of experience, to hold them compact and demonstrate their kinship, but rather as 'a kind of marble temple shining on a hill,' pompous monuments dedicated ostensibly to Academe and Dialectica - but with the pontiff's name engraved not small upon the portal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Consciousness, Intelligence and Matter Quite recently, in reading a critical notice of Prof. Ernst Haeckel's latest work; the riddle OF the universe, I was pleased to note the general accordance of the ideas herein set forth concerning the (so to speak) intelligence of' matter with the Jena Professor's idea of a sole substance; although it had not occurred to me to label them monism. I concluded, however, to publish the essay for the benefit of my philosophic friends, as a fairly comprehensible introduction to one portion of the Monistic philosophy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Clear Consciousness I can tell you my knowledge, but I cannot make it your knowledge. Your acquiring of knowledge lies within yourself and through your own right desires and by your own right endeavors. This article teaches, that the way to live that is best for one's self is: Keep your body, both Mentally and Materially in as near a perfect condition as is possible. By lowering your Spiritual condition, you are lowering both the mental and material condition of your body, and by neglecting the proper material attention to your body, you are liable to injury, ailments and disease. To attain to the knowledge of the basis and understanding of some things requires the condition of a Clear Consciousness. The Spirituality of a Clear Consciousness is in its true and perfect condition in fact and in action and is known and recognizable by the Clear Consciousness, as well as the Knowledge that the Spirituality could attain to, which would include knowledge! of all that concerned itself. There is nothing in either the Consciousness or the Material Reason of a Clear Consciousness between itself and Pure Intelligence. The statements made herein are based on knowledge of the writer. Book The Mystery of Consciousness

Download or read book The Mystery of Consciousness written by John R. Searle and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has long been one of the most fundamental problems of philosophy, and it is now, John Searle writes, "the most important problem in the biological sciences": What is consciousness? Is my inner awareness of myself something separate from my body? In what began as a series of essays in The New York Review of Books, John Searle evaluates the positions on consciousness of such well-known scientists and philosophers as Francis Crick, Gerald Edelman, Roger Penrose, Daniel Dennett, David Chalmers, and Israel Rosenfield. He challenges claims that the mind works like a computer, and that brain functions can be reproduced by computer programs. With a sharp eye for confusion and contradiction, he points out which avenues of current research are most likely to come up with a biological examination of how conscious states are caused by the brain. Only when we understand how the brain works will we solve the mystery of consciousness, and only then will we begin to understand issues ranging from artificial intelligence to our very nature as human beings.

Book The Inner Consciousness How to Awaken and Direct It Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Inner Consciousness How to Awaken and Direct It Classic Reprint written by Swami Prakashananda and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inner Consciousness, How to Awaken and Direct It In theoretical as well as applied psychology no term is more misleading, or confusing than the term consciousness. We use the term often in our conversation; we come across it in our study; but when we are asked to define it pro perly, to explain its significance, its meaning, or the idea for which that word stands, we are unable to do so. And that is because there are so many varied ideas concerning consciousness. There are so many aspects of consciousness, there are so many states of consciousness that we get mixed up - that is, we confuse one with the other. So we must know thoroughly the true significance of the term. Then we can make such distinctions as inner consciousness and outer consciousness. What is truly meant by consciousness, or what is the principle back of that term? There are many ideas which cannot be expressed pro perly for lack of words, or lack of terms. The word consciousness is really derived from the Latin root scio, to know, and con, together; so the word consciousness from the derivative meaning would signify: to know together. Book An Organismal Theory of Consciousness Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Organismal Theory of Consciousness Classic Reprint written by William Emerson Ritter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Organismal Theory of Consciousness With the distinction here made once fully grasped comes the revelation that man is an Object of zoological research and treatment no less certainly than is a horse, a fish, a lobster, or an amoeba. But since man's highest, that is his psychical or spiritual attributes are the ones most decisive of his kind, it is these attributes which make him particularly interesting, zoologically speaking - just as, for example, it is the attributes of a horse as a horse, and not as an animal generally that elicits our particular interest in the horse. Zoology rightly understood is preeminent among all the sciences as the science of particulars. This important truth seems to have been first appreciated by Aristotle; and the fact that oneof the most fundamental differences between him and his teacher, Plato, concerned the doctrine of Par ticulars as opposed to that of Universals, is probably con nected closely with Aristotle's great interest in and attention to zoology. I have not seen any reference to this surmise by writers on Aristotle and his philosophy, yet it appears to me highly significant. Book The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind

This book was released on 2000-08-15 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Book Award Finalist: “This man’s ideas may be the most influential, not to say controversial, of the second half of the twentieth century.”—Columbus Dispatch At the heart of this classic, seminal book is Julian Jaynes's still-controversial thesis that human consciousness did not begin far back in animal evolution but instead is a learned process that came about only three thousand years ago and is still developing. The implications of this revolutionary scientific paradigm extend into virtually every aspect of our psychology, our history and culture, our religion—and indeed our future. “Don’t be put off by the academic title of Julian Jaynes’s The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind. Its prose is always lucid and often lyrical…he unfolds his case with the utmost intellectual rigor.”—The New York Times “When Julian Jaynes . . . speculates that until late in the twentieth millennium BC men had no consciousness but were automatically obeying the voices of the gods, we are astounded but compelled to follow this remarkable thesis.”—John Updike, The New Yorker “He is as startling as Freud was in The Interpretation of Dreams, and Jaynes is equally as adept at forcing a new view of known human behavior.”—American Journal of Psychiatry

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Study in Consciousness: A Contribution to the Science of Psychology Tms book is intended as an aid to students in their study of the growth and develop ment of consciousness, offering hints and suggestions which may prove serviceable to them. It does not pretend to be a complete exposition, but rather, as its sub-title states. A contribution to the science of Psychology. Far ampler ma terials than are within my reach are necessary for any complete exposition of the far-reaching science which deals with the unfolding of consciousness. These materials are slowly accumulating in the hands of earnest and painstaking students, but no effort has yet been made to arrange and systematise them into a co-ordinated whole. In this little volume I have only arranged a small part of this material, in the hope that it may be useful now to. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From the Unconscious, to the Conscious One duty, and one only, lies upon him - to be faithful to the author's meaning. No attempt at literary finish can palliate or excuse the slightest departure from that duty in a work which, however scientific in essence, is necessarily somewhat controversial in form. When to this duty there are added the obligations which the honour of personal friendship involves, faithfulness in rendering the idea becomes doubly imperative. To this all other considerations must give place. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Physiology of Consciousness Vol 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Physiology of Consciousness Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by Louisa Burns and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-02 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physiology of Consciousness, Vol. 3 This volume was prepared in the hope of presenting in a simple manner those physiological conditions which underlie the rational treatment of abnormal mental conditions. If the manner in which the subject is presented appears too grossly materialistic in the light of the idealistic methods which have characterized most of previous discussions of the processes of consciousness, it must be remembered that what ever is really true is oi more worth than even the most beautiful of untrue ideas. We do not now think of astron omy as being materialistic because the laws which govern the heavenly bodies are being determined. The glory of the nightly sky is not lessened because the stars have been analyzed and the planets have been weighed. The forces active in the formation of mountains and oceans are studied. Even the most whimsical of Nature's moods, the variations in the weather, are subject to laws which are being daily made more clear. The development of plants and animals, the physiological activities of the human body and its devel opment, are studied, and the immutable laws are being demonstrated day by day. In all the domain of human thought, the study of conscious phenomena alone has been kept subject to the necessity for an idealistic method of treat ment. This method, which long retarded the development of other sciences, should be set aside also in the study of conscious phenomena. A rational psychology must depend upon the use of those methods which have been successful in the study of other sciences.
