Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most mysterious part of photosynthesis yet the most important for all aerobic life on Earth (including ourselves) is how green plants, algae and cyanobacteria make atmospheric oxygen from water. This thermodynamically difficult process is only achieved in Nature by the unique pigment/protein complex known as Photosystem II, using sunlight to power the reaction. The present volume contains 34 comprehensive chapters authored by 75 scientific experts from around the world. It gives an up-to-date account on all what is currently known about the molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics and physiology of Photosystem II. The book is divided into several parts detailing the protein constituents, functional sites, tertiary structure, molecular dynamics, and mechanisms of homeostasis. The book ends with a comparison of Photosystem II with other related enzymes and bio-mimetic systems. Since the unique water-splitting chemistry catalyzed by Photosystem II leads to the production of pure oxygen gas and has the potential for making hydrogen gas, a primary goal of this book is to provide a molecular guide to future protein engineers and bio-mimetic chemists in the development of biocatalysts for the generation of clean, renewable energy from sunlight and water.

Book Chlorophyll a Fluorescence in Aquatic Sciences Methods and Applications

Download or read book Chlorophyll a Fluorescence in Aquatic Sciences Methods and Applications written by David J. Suggett and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-23 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of variable chlorophyll fluorescence have revolutionised global research of photosynthetic bacteria, algae and plants and in turn assessment of the status of aquatic ecosystems, a success that has partly been facilitated by the widespread commercialisation of a suite of chlorophyll fluorometers designed for almost every application in lakes, rivers and oceans. Numerous publications have been produced as researchers and assessors have simultaneously sought to optimise protocols and practices for key organisms or water bodies; however, such parallel efforts have led to difficulties in reconciling processes and patterns across the aquatic sciences. This book follows on from the first international conference on “chlorophyll fluorescence in the aquatic sciences” (AQUAFLUO 2007): to bridge the gaps between the concept, measurement and application of chlorophyll fluorescence through the synthesis and integration of current knowledge from leading researchers and assessors as well as instrument manufacturers.

Book Structure of Phototrophic Prokaryotes

Download or read book Structure of Phototrophic Prokaryotes written by John F. Stolz and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1990-11-27 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth review of the ultrastructure of the phototrophic bacteria and how electron microscopy is used in the study of light-harvesting antennae and reactions centers, as well as ecology. Topics discussed include detailed methods and models for the three basic types of photosynthetic apparatus. The thylakoid (cyanobacteria), intracytoplasmic chromatophore membrane (purple bacteria), and chlorosome (green bacteria) models are presented based on ultrastructural studies including ultra-thin sections, 3-D reconstruction of thick sections, freeze-fracture replicates, and immunolabeling. The book also explains how species of phototrophic bacteria can be identified in natural populations by their ultrastructure. Structure of Phototrophic Prokaryotes will be an invaluable reference resource for researchers and students working in photosynthesis and microbial ecology.

Book Advances in Photosynthesis Research

Download or read book Advances in Photosynthesis Research written by C. Sybesma and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 857 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sixth International Congress on Photosynthesis took place from 1 to 6 August 1983, on the Campus of the "Vrije Universiteit Brussel", in Brussels, Belgium. These Proceedings contain most of the scientific contributions offered during the Congress. The Brussels Congress was the largest thus far held in the series of International Congresses on Photosynthesis. It counted over 1100 active participants. The organizers tried to minimize the disadvantages of such a large size by making maximum use of the facili ties available on a university campus. Most contributions were offered in the form of posters which were displayed in a substantial number of classrooms. The discussion sessions, twice a day, four or five in parallel, took place in lecture rooms in the very vicinity of these classrooms. In this way it was attempted to generate the atmosphere of a small meeting. The unity of the subject Photosynthesis was preserved in the ten plenary lectures, organ1sed in such a way that a general overview of two diverse topics was given every day. In addition, there were the five times four parallel symposia dealing with some six teen general topics. Every editor of proceedings of a congress is faced with the problem of editing and arranging the contributions, a problem compounded by the wide diversity and the large number of the 753 manuscripts.

  • ISBN : 3319325108
  • Pages : 182 pages

Download or read book Atomic Evidence written by David S. Goodsell and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-04 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will take an evidence-based approach to current knowledge about biomolecules and their place in our lives, inviting readers to explore how we know what we know, and how current gaps in knowledge may influence the way we approach the information. Biomolecular science is increasingly important in our everyday life, influencing the choices we make about our diet, our health, and our wellness. Often, however, information about biomolecular science is presented as a list of immutable facts, discouraging critical thought. The book will introduce the basic tools of structural biology, supply real-life examples, and encourage critical thought about aspects of biology that are still not fully understood.
