Book Box Girl

Download or read book Box Girl written by Lilibet Snellings and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When 22-year-old Lilibet Snellings moved to Los Angeles on a whim, she unintentionally became a “slash” to keep her head above water—a writer/waitress/actress/Box Girl. One night each week, Lilibet would go to The Standard Hotel in West Hollywood, don a pair of white boy shorts with a matching tank, touch up her lip gloss, and crawl into a giant glass case behind the front desk. There, she could do whatever she wanted—check email, catch up on reading, even sleep—as long as she ignored the many hotel guests who would point and ask the staff, “Is she allowed to use the bathroom?” (Yes.) Dog-paddling through her twenties, Snellings resisted financial bailouts (for the most part) from her sweet Southern mother and business-oriented dad, while pondering her peculiar position as a human art installation. Was she a piece of art or a piece of ass? Was she allowed to read both Walt Whitman and US Weekly as she lounged in an oversized, waterless aquarium behind a hotel concierge desk? From misinterpreting a modeling agency interview as a talent audition, to avoiding Bond-girl-style deaths at New Year’s Eve parties, Snellings shares and laughs at her many mishaps while living in LA.

Book The Dark Side

Download or read book The Dark Side written by Emmanuel Raufflet and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discredit of a certain brand of capitalism – and the managers that practice it – continues apace. The increasing lack of tolerance for short-term thinking and a systematic neglect of the social, regulatory, and economic conditions in which business ought to operate means we are entering a time of trouble and questions – an era of economic, social, and environmental turbulence. There is a critical need for business educators and trainers to expose students and managers to these issues to examine, explore, and understand the different multifaceted, complex phenomena of our late capitalist era. There is also a need to foster a climate for future and current business managers to reflect, feel, and think differently both ethically and cognitively. The 16 innovative case studies in The Dark Side: Critical Cases on the Downside of Business are designed for this very purpose: to provoke reflection and debate; to challenge and change perceptions; and to create responsible managers. The cases are innovative in two ways. First, in terms of content they acknowledge the diversity of actors and interests in and around organizations. They contain different levels of analysis, and propose different points of view and logics. They recognize that decisions that seem sound when they are made may actually contain the seeds of their later failure. Second, these cases are innovative in terms of format. Whereas most cases are formatted around decision-making situations, these are more diverse and open-ended. This stimulates the use of "judgment" – the capacity to synthesize, integrate, and balance short- and long-term effects, appreciate effects on different groups, and learn to listen and evaluate. Whereas decision-making is the key skill when confronting complicated issues and situations, "judgment-making" relies on experience and is a far better tool in the complex, murky, gray areas typical of business ethics. The cases included here are all finalists or award-winners from the first seven years of the Dark Side of Business Case Competition, a joint event of the Academy of Management's Critical Management Studies Section and Management Education Section. In many areas of management, case studies are almost exclusively devoted to "best practice" cases or difficult decisions faced by basically well-managed firms. When educators look for resources to illustrate to students the more typical cases, let alone the really scandalous practices of the worst firms, the cupboard is almost entirely bare. From the beginning, the Dark Side competition aimed at encouraging case studies that integrate socio-political issues with organizational dynamics, thus contextualizing organizational and management problems within the broader system of capitalism. These cases comprise a diverse and rich collection from a range of countries, continents, and issues and focus on interactions in business organizations as well as between business organizations and groups and societies. The Dark Side: Critical Cases on the Downside of Business is divided into four sections. The first sheds light on gray areas in the behavior of businesses. The second concerns the interactions between business and local communities in diverse countries. The third concerns crises, and specifically how firms may create or manage them. Finally, the fourth section concerns gray areas in business behavior in the global context. The Dark Side: Critical Cases on the Downside of Business will be an essential purchase for educators and is expected to be a widely used resource at all levels of management education.Online Teaching Notes to accompany each chapter are available on request with the purchase of the book.

  • Author : Penelope McRedmond
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2018-11-16
  • ISBN : 1526508478
  • Pages : 424 pages

Download or read book Mediation Law written by Penelope McRedmond and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-16 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 2017 the Government passed the Mediation Act 2017. This Act sets out a statutory framework integrating mediation into the Irish civil justice system. The 2017 Act aims to promote mediation as a viable, effective and efficient alternative to court proceedings, thereby reducing legal costs, speeding up the resolution of disputes and reducing the stress and acrimony that often accompanies court proceedings. This new title focuses on the 2017 Act and takes the reader through it section by section, analysing the meaning and impact of each. In addition this is the first book in Ireland to draw together the law from many different disciplines and apply them to mediation. The relevance of the law of contract to mediation and the law relevant to family law mediations are particularly highlighted. The book also examines the law relevant to mediation in the context of the fundamental principles of mediation. The voluntary nature of mediation, the self determination of the parties, the neutrality and impartiality of the mediator and particularly the importance of confidentiality in the mediation process are therefore all explained in relation to the legal issues that arise as a consequence of their relevance to the mediation process. The book enables the reader to understand the relationship between the Mediation Act and the civil justice system with a detailed look at the relevant Rules of Court their interaction with the Act and application by the Courts. In European Union law the impact of the Directive on certain aspects of mediation in civil and commercial matters 2008 is referenced throughout the book. The book also examines a number of statutory procedures that fall outside the Mediation Act, giving a convenient, easily accessible description of the mediation processes under the following: · Workplace Relations Act 2015 · The Residential Tenancies Act 2004 · The Disability Act 2005 · The Multi-Unit Developments Act 2011 · The Civil Liability and Courts Act 2004 · The Financial and Pensions Ombudsman Act 2017 Penelope McRedmond is a UK and US Lawyer and certified mediator. She taught constitutional law for a number of years in the UK and has recently been working as an independent researcher and writer while also lecturing on mediation at the Irish School of Ecumenics at Trinity College Dublin.

Book excerpt: Hold on to your sides for the third and funniest instalment of ‘The Uranus’ space romp trilogy. Journey with the villainous Dr. D’Eath as he threatens to kill the dead people of Lom. Unsuccessful, he moves on to rush the procrastinators of Askme and falls madly in lust with Nyps, so aptly named for her big feet. Meanwhile our hero, Roy, enjoys a few adventures of his own. News of his exploits in the Dead Zone have spread throughout the galaxy and there are those who need his help. Part of his deal with Nev of the Dead Zone was to find Zak from the ‘Kidz Alright’ and to get him to do a gig in exchange for the release of all their prisoners. With both Zak and Nev aboard the Artois there is a final showdown with Dr. D’Eath and Roy uses the Architect’s T.I.T.S. to thwart him, or was it his T.W.A.T? And so the opening three books of our trilogy are done. A book of just over 100,000 words; seasoned with humour and social comment and spiced with a hint of adult language, well quite a bit of that actually.

Book excerpt: Through a variety of archival documents, artefacts, illustrations, and references to primary and secondary literature, On the Job explores the changing styles, business practices, and lived experiences of the people who make, sell, and wear service-industry uniforms in the United States. It highlights how the uniform business is distinct from the fashion business, including how manufacturing developed outside of the typical fashion hubs such as New York City; and gives attention to the ways that various types of employers (small business, corporate, government and others) differ in their ambitions and regulations surrounding uniforms. On the Job sheds new light on an understudied yet important field of dress and clothing within everyday life, and is an essential addition to any fashion historian's library, appealing to all those interested in material culture, the service industry, heritage and history.

He's too old for me, too alpha for my tastes, and too bossy in the bedroom. Though, I have to admit he knows exactly how to use his . . . firehose. I'm not interested in a forever kind of relationship, but he's down for whatever I'm willing to give. Our arrangement is perfect. At least that's how it begins. I never wanted the happily ever after, but he's just so tempting. The smart choice would be to end things before they combust, but for some reason I can't push Cam away. The harder I try, the harder he--well, you get the picture. I wish things were different. I want to be someone worthy of his devotion. But the secrets I hold close, they don't just eat me up inside, they destroy anyone who gets too close. So, I won't fall in love. Simple, right? Wrong. So freaking wrong. I don't just fall. I crash and burn for this man. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Turns out I'm not the only one telling lies and keeping secrets, and his are enough to rip us apart forever. Caught in the Lies reads as standalone but readers can enjoy Cam and Jill's FREE prequel, One Hot Night, available now or begin with Callie's book in Caught in the Flames.
