Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Was Thomas Lodge an Actor?: An Exposition Touching the Social Status of the Playwright in the Time of Queen Elizabeth In the eighth volume of Dodsley's Select Collection of Old Plays, 1825, edited by Mr. J. P. Collier, an incorrect quotation is'made from Cosson's Plays Confuted in Five Actions, in which Lodge is called a vagrant person visited by the heavy hand of God; and it is thence inferred by the editor that Lodge had been an actor. He again repeats the alleged quotation in his Introduction to the reprint of Gosson's School of Abuse which he superintended for the Shakespeare Society in 1841. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rosalind: A Novel Graceful, too, are the descriptions of the landscapes in Arden, such as that of the fair valley where Rosalynde and Aliena found Montanus and Corydon seeing their sheep feed, playing on their pipes many pleasant tunes, and from music and melody falling into much amorous chat. So charmingly graceful are these descriptions that, together with Shakespeare, Lodge has( made the Forest of Arden almost as much the accepted home\ of the pastoral as Sicily and Arcadia had been hitherto. Book The Realms of Apollo

Download or read book The Realms of Apollo written by Raymond A. Anselment and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In The Realms of Apollo, literary scholar Raymond A. Anselment examines how seventeenth-century English authors confronted the physical and psychological realities of death." "Focusing on the dangers of childbirth and the terrors of bubonic plague, venereal disease, and smallpox, the book reveals in the discourse of literary and medical texts the meanings of sickness and death in both the daily life and culture of seventeenth-century England. These perspectives show each realm anew as the domain of Apollo, the deity widely celebrated in myth as the god of poetry and the god of medicine. Authors of both formal elegies and simple broadsides saw themselves as healers who tried to find in language the solace physicians could not find in medicine. Within the context of the suffering so unmistakable in the medical treatises and in the personal diaries, memoirs, and letters, the poets' struggles illuminate a new cultural consciousness of sickness and death."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book The Impotency Poem from Ancient Latin to Restoration English Literature

Download or read book The Impotency Poem from Ancient Latin to Restoration English Literature written by Hannah Lavery and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book length study of the motif of impotency in poetry from early antiquity through to the late Restoration, this book explores the impotency poem as a recognisable form of poetry in the longer tradition of erotic elegy. Hannah Lavery’s central claim is that the impotency motif is adopted by poets in recognition of its potential to signify satirically through its use as symbol and allegory. By drawing together analysis of works in the tradition, Lavery shows how the impotency motif is used to engage with anxieties as to what it means to enact ’service’ within political and social contexts. She demonstrates that impotency poems can be seen on one level to represent bawdy escapism, but on the other to offer positions of resistance and opposition to social and political concerns contemporary to a particular time. Whilst the link between the 'Imperfect Enjoyment' poems by Ovid and Rochester is well known, Lavery here looks further back to the origins of the concept of male impotency as degradation in the works of earlier Roman poets. This is an important context for considering how the impotency poem then first appears in the French and English vernaculars during the sixteenth century, leading to translations and adaptations throughout the seventeenth century. Lavery's close readings of the poems consider both the nature of the literary form, and the political and social contexts within which the works appear, in order to chart the intertextual development of the impotency poem as a distinct form of writing in the early modern period.
