Before Henry is long in the grave, John's greedy wife, Fanny, persuades her husband to renege on the promise. Henry Dashwood's love for his second family is also used to arouse his jealousy and convince him not to help his sisters. Mrs Dashwood moves her family to Barton Cottage in Devonshire, near her cousin, Sir John Middleton. Their new home is modest, but they are warmly received by Sir John and his wife as well as his friend, Colonel Brandon. Brandon is attracted to Marianne, and Mrs Jennings teases them about it. Marianne is not pleased, considering the thirty-five-year-old Colonel Brandon an old bachelor, incapable of inspiring love in anyone. While out for a walk, Marianne is caught in the rain, slips, and sprains her ankle. The dashing John Willoughby sees and assists her back to her home. Marianne quickly comes to admire his good looks and tastes in poetry, music, art, and love. This leads Elinor and Mrs Dashwood to suspect that the couple are secretly engaged. Elinor cautions Marianne against her unguarded conduct, but Marianne refuses to check her emotions.

Book excerpt: Jane Austen (16 December 1775 – 18 July 1817) was an English novelist known principally for her five major novels which interpret, critique and comment upon the life of the British landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Her most highly praised novel during her own lifetime was Pride and Prejudice which was her second published novel. Her plots often reflect upon the dependence of women on marriage in the pursuit of favorable social standing and economic security. Austen's main novels are rarely out of print today though they were first published anonymously and brought her little personal fame with only a few glancing reviews during her lifetime. A significant transition in her posthumous reputation as an author occurred in 1869, fifty-two years after her death, when her nephew published A Memoir of Jane Austen which effectively introduced her to a wider public and reading audience. Austen's most successful novel in her own lifetime was Pride and Prejudice which went through two editions during her own life. Her third published novel was Mansfield Park which was largely overlooked by the professional reviewers though it was a great success with the public still within her lifetime. All five of her major novels were published for the first time between 1811 and 1818. From 1811 until 1816, with the premiere publication of Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1815), she achieved success as a published writer. She wrote two additional novels Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, both published posthumously in 1818, and began another one, which was eventually titled Sanditon, but died before completing it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sense and Sensibility is a novel by Jane Austen that was published in three volumes in 1811 and became a classic. The comic work offers a lucid depiction of 19th-century middle-class life as it follows the romantic relationships of Elinor and Marianne Dashwood. While focusing on the sisters Elinor and Marianne, the novel tells the story of the impoverished Dashwood family. After sisters become destitute upon the death of their father, they leave to John, their half- brother who is instructed to take care of them. But John is dissuaded of his duty by Fanny, his greedy wife. Initially, titled as Elinor and Marianne, Austen significantly revised it in 1809. It was her first published novel. Sense and Sensibility contains what would become Austen’s trademark features: insightful observation, characterization, and wit. Upon publication, Sense and Sensibility was a success and it later was adapted for film, stage, and television. After its commercial success, it spurred a resurgence of interest in Austen’s other novels.
