Download or read book Buffy Omnibus Volume 7 written by Joss Whedon and published by Dark Horse Comics. This book was released on 2005-05-17 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buffy's emotions run high after the tragic loss of her mother, but she still fights. She struggles with blood-starved vamps from another dimension and swarms of green demon children with a penchant for nibbling on faces, and, as barriers between alternate realities erode, nightmare versions of friends and long-dead enemies must be dealt with. Then Buffy's own death — having sacrificed herself for Dawn — takes a toll on the Scoobies, as they deal with demons and crazed forest creatures in a tale by Amber Benson ("Tara") and Christopher Golden. When Buffy is restored to life, she undertakes a secret mission with Angel, and all the loose ends are tied up with Buffy's trip to hell, bringing an end to an amazing four-year run of Buffy comics. * The Buffy Omnibus books collect the earliest Buffy comics and are an excellent precursor to Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight series. * "There's plenty of humor and action here. Lots of strange (and strangely fun) violence. And, for Slayer fans, Omnibus is an opportunity to run down memory lane and relive those early, exciting Slayer days." — comicbookbin.com

Book Aesthetic Persuasion

Download or read book Aesthetic Persuasion written by Eli Ben-Joseph and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1996 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traces James' negative opinions about Jews throughout his life. The sources of his anti-Jewish attitudes and the antisemitic stereotypes in his works were the opinions of his father, who described the Jews as "spiritually bankrupt" and the "epitome of greed"; a broad spectrum of American and French literature, ranging from school texts to well-known authors (e.g. Hawthorne); and ethnographic ideas popular during his lifetime. Discusses discrimination against Jews in the U.S. in the late 19th century, stating that James' works reflect the prevalent negative reaction to Jews. His pro-Dreyfusard position shows some ambivalence in his attitude, but his antisemitism is clearly depicted in his works. He uses the Jews as scapegoats, and sees the Jews in New York, in particular, as immigrants conspiring to conquer the city. States that although antisemitism is a marginal element in James' writing, many other writers and many readers were influenced by his racist attitudes.

Book The American Weird

Download or read book The American Weird written by Julius Greve and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hitherto classified as a form of genre fiction, or as a particular aesthetic quality of literature by H. P. Lovecraft, the weird has now come to refer to a broad spectrum of artistic practices and expressions including fiction, film, television, photography, music, and visual and performance art. Largely under-theorized so far, The American Weird brings together perspectives from literary, cultural, media and film studies, and from philosophy, to provide a thorough exploration of the weird mode. Separated into two sections – the first exploring the concept of the weird and the second how it is applied through various media – this book generates new approaches to fundamental questions: Can the weird be conceptualized as a generic category, as an aesthetic mode or as an epistemological position? May the weird be thought through in similar ways to what Sianne Ngai calls the zany, the cute, and the interesting? What are the transformations it has undergone aesthetically and politically since its inception in the early twentieth century? Which strands of contemporary critical theory and philosophy have engaged in a dialogue with the discourses of and on the weird? And what is specifically “American” about this aesthetic mode? As the first comprehensive, interdisciplinary study of the weird, this book not only explores the writings of Lovecraft, Caitlín Kiernan, China Miéville, and Jeff VanderMeer, but also the graphic novels of Alan Moore, the music of Captain Beefheart, the television show Twin Peaks and the films of Lily Amirpour, Matthew Barney, David Lynch, and Jordan Peele.
