Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Poems of Robert Herrick In 1844 was published in paper covers 2 vols. 16mo. an unpretentious but not at all an unworthy little edition intrinsically "edited by Henry G. Clarke" (London: H. G. Clarke & Co.). In 1846 came William Pickering's typographically beautiful and attractive edition: 2 vols, cr. 8vo, and a few on large paper. The Editor was neither vigilant nor capable. The Writer of the Memoir disclaimed the editing. He was the late Samuel Weller Singer. He might equally have relinquished any merit for his Memoir seeing that as Mr. Hazlitt not unjustly remarks, it is "but a lame paraphrase of that attached to the edition of 1823," and altogether is perfunctorily done. In 1848 was published "Selections from Herrick for Translation into Latin Verse with a short Preface by the Rev. A. J. Macleane, M.A., Trinity College, Cambridge, Principal of Brighton College (London: George Bell; pp. 79, 16mo.) Other complete editions appeared in 1850 and 1852 - each in 2 vols. This numbering has rendered it possible to print those Epigrams, which successive editors have joined in deploring, in a detachable Appendix, their place in the original being indicated by the numeration. It remains to be added that the footnotes in this edition are intended to explain, _as unobtrusively as possible, difficulties of phrase or allusion which might conceivably hinder the understanding of Herrick's meaning. In the longer Notes at the end of each volume earlier versions of some im portant poems are printed from manuscripts at the British Museum, and an endeavour has been made to extend the list of Herrick's debts to classical sources, and to identify some of his friends who have hitherto escaped research. An editor is always apt to mention his predecessors rather for blame than praise, and I therefore take this Opportunity of acknowledging my general indebtedness to the pioneer work of Mr. Hazlitt and Dr. Grosart, upon whose foundations all editors of Herrick must neces sarily build.
