Book The Competitive Strength of the Information and Communication Industry in Europe

Download or read book The Competitive Strength of the Information and Communication Industry in Europe written by H. van Houten and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In front of us lies a rather unique study. Unique in respect of both its initiative and its set up. This study is the result of a private initiative of an international organization of management consultancy firms. It is the first time that such a broad international study was undertaken jointly by individual consulting firms in many different countries. Moreover the method used can be characterized as 'from the bottom up'. Representatives of almost 100 organizations in seven European countries were interviewed by seven individual management consultancy firms on the basis of their own reputation and contacts. Not only the well-known multinationals in the information and communication industry participated, but also medium-sized and small companies as well as government agencies. The study focuses on one sector of industry that is considered to be of prime importance for employment in Europe, viz. the information and communication industry. It is generally assumed that important instruments for the stimulation and strengthening of Europe's position in this field are: reduction of competition within Europe better coordination of R&D efforts improved harmonization of rules, standards and regulations better coordination and education programmes increased stimulation and guidance by governments. This study puts these assumptions to the test. It assesses the state of the art regarding these instruments and identifies the actions needed to improve the present situation.

Book EU Competition Law and the Information and Communication Technology Network Industries

Download or read book EU Competition Law and the Information and Communication Technology Network Industries written by Andrej Fatur and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03-08 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Competition policies have long been based on a scholarly tradition focused on static models and static analysis of industrial organisation. However, recent developments in industrial organisation literature have led to significant advances, moving beyond traditional static models and a preoccupation with price competition, to consider the organisation of industries in a dynamic context. This is especially important in the field of information and communication technology (ICT) network industries where competition centres on network effects, innovation and intellectual property rights, and where the key driver of consumer benefit is technological progress. Consequently, when an antitrust intervention is contemplated, a number of considerations that arise out of the specific nature of the ICT sector have to be taken into account to ensure improved consumer welfare. This book considers the adequacy of existing EU competition policy in the area of the ICT industries in the light of the findings of modern economic theory. Particular attention is given to the implications of these dynamic markets for the competitive assessment and treatment of the most common competitive harms in this area, such as non-price predatory practices, tying and bundling, co-operative standard setting, platform joint ventures and co-operative R&D.

Book European Perspectives in Marketing

Download or read book European Perspectives in Marketing written by Erdener Kaynak and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improve your grasp of contemporary European marketing issues with these fascinating case studies and analyses! From the editor: Europe is not a homogenous mass market. It is rather a heterogeneous market with substantial regional, country, and individual market differences. There are three major sub-markets: European Union (EU) countries, European Free Trade Area (EFTA) countries, and Eastern/Central European (ECE) countries (accession countries). Ten of these countries joined the EU on May 1st, 2004. These countries offer tremendous market opportunities for other European countries, as there is a strong demand in these ten countries for various products and services. Very soon, we will be witnessing the emergence of an enlarged Europe with high market and investment potential. This resource examines marketing practices and consumer behavior in several EU countries, plus one EFTA country and one Associate EU member country. With conceptual frameworks, case studies, analytical insights into European marketing issues, empirical data, and propositions for future testing, European Perspectives in Marketing presents clear, understandable writing on: outsourcing industrial products from Eastern and Central European suppliers cross-cultural differences in the effect of advertising repetition and size—with a case study from Germany the internationalization of small high-tech firms—with case examples from Norway the impact of the euro on Italian consumers’ currency adjustment strategies—have they successfully adapted to the new currency by substituting their old internal price references (based on the high-denomination lira) with a new set of references that reflects the low-denomination currency of the euro? international antitrust strategies and the policies of Pepsi and Coke in Europe as compared to in the United States—and a look at the managerial and public policy implications of US and EU antitrust regulations recent advances in Information & Communication Technology (ICT) and how they can reduce the communication barriers between and within geographically dispersed organizations why young Turkish adults (high school and university students, and young people in the workforce) purchase and use mobile telephones for symbolic rather than practical reasons

Book EU Japan Relations and the Crisis of Multilateralism

Download or read book EU Japan Relations and the Crisis of Multilateralism written by Julie Gilson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting the history of relations between the European Union and Japan, this book explains the origins and significance of the momentous 2018 Economic Partnership Agreement and its parallel Strategic Partnership Agreement. Set within the historical context of the 1991 Hague Declaration and Action Plan of 2001, this book analyses the impact of recent background changes to the liberal trading order, the proliferation of free trade agreements, and uncertainty about role of the United States in the world on relations between Japan and the EU. Adopting a path-dependent approach, it illustrates how these agreements were reached as a result of growing patterns of cooperative behaviour between the EU and Japan, and the imprint of shared past experiences in areas from trade to security. In so doing, this book also raises important questions about the future of multilateral cooperation, exploring the potential for bilateral agreements to undermine the possibility of finding international solutions to increasingly international problems. EU–Japan Relations and the Crisis of Multilateralism will appeal to students and scholars of European and Japanese politics and international relations, as well as policymakers internationally with an interest in these significant agreements.

Book Competitiveness and Economic Development in Europe

Download or read book Competitiveness and Economic Development in Europe written by Sławomir I. Bukowski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-04-12 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of an economy to adapt quickly, flexibly, and effectively to the demands of the changing international economic environment can only be investigated using the achievements of other national economies or regions as a benchmark. This book analyzes the fundamental factors of competitiveness, which will, in turn, facilitate economic development and growth, in the new post-crisis environment. In the economic, social, legal, and technological environment that has emerged in recent years, as well as in the period after the recent financial crisis, it is critical to define, assess, and implement new pathways to competitiveness and economic development. The book covers all aspects of competitiveness and economic growth, from financial intermediaries to tourism and the digital economy, and from regulation and corporate governance to exchange rate dynamics and monetary policy issues. It uses empirical findings from a variety of different countries with divergent economic structures and policies. It examines the new system of production, and the technological, commercial, financial and institutional environment, with the aim of recommending a proportional division of benefits and costs of economic growth. It offers a fresh, holistic, and flexible concept to underscore the new relationship between competitiveness and economic growth. Such an approach is needed, whereby competitiveness is no longer a zero-sum game between countries, but is achievable for all countries. The book recommends future directions and offers policy solutions, and as such, will appeal to students, researchers, and policymakers, as well as those interested in the role of competitiveness in the operation of markets, productivity, and economic development, and how it might foster innovation and growth.
