Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brilliant analysis by John Sommerville, a professor of philosophy who testified for the defense as a non-communist expert in the Smith Act trials of the 1950's. Somerville, philosopher, teacher, husband, father, chose to make a stand for freedom of speech and association by testifying for those accused of communist subversion. His was a principled stand at a time when principles could lead to marginalization and job loss at best, legal harassment, and imprisonment at worst. His hope was that the rule of law would win the day and that freedom of speech could be preserved. Somerville believed that anticommunist legal harassment was on its face contrary to the US democratic tradition and in violation of constitutional protections. Somerville convey in his testimony, documented in this book, the illogic of anticommunism and in so doing contributed to a larger discourse on peace and democratic freedoms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The U.S. government's interpretation of these issues threatened the very existence of civil liberties in our country for a generation. Dr. Somerville's testimony and the Court record herein is a key document not only for U.S. history and the future but wherever there is concern for the status of individual freedom or the meaning of "Marxist" revolution. In the course of some ten days on the witness stand, under intensive examination by several teams of defense and government counsel, as well as three judges, Dr. Somerville went into every aspect of Communist teachings in relation to the issue of forcible overthrow of government, the heart of all the trials."--BOOK JACKET.

Book UNESCO Without Borders

Download or read book UNESCO Without Borders written by Aigul Kulnazarova and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-23 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was established in 1945 with twin aims: to rebuild various institutions of the world destroyed by war, and to promote international understanding and peaceful cooperation among nations. Based on empirical and historical research and with a particular focus on history teaching, international understanding and peace, UNESCO Without Borders offers a new research trajectory for understanding the roles played by UNESCO and other international organizations, as well as the effects of globalization on education. With fifteen chapters by authors from cross-disciplinary and diverse geographical areas, this book assesses the global implications and results of UNESCO’s educational policies and practices. It explores how UNESCO-approved guidelines of textbook revisions and peace initiatives were implemented in member-states, illustrating the existence of both national confrontations with the new worldview promoted by UNESCO, as well as the constraints of international cooperation. This book provides an insightful analysis of UNESCO’s past challenges and also indicates promising future research directions in support of international understanding for peace and cooperation. As such, it will be of key interest to researchers, postgraduate students, academics in the fields of international and comparative education, education politics and policies, and to those interested in the historical study of international organizations and their global impact. The book will also appeal to practitioners, especially those who conduct research on or work in post-conflict societies.

Book The Romance of American Communism

Download or read book The Romance of American Communism written by Vivian Gornick and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Before I knew that I was Jewish or a girl I knew that I was a member of the working class.” So begins Vivian Gornick’s exploration of how the world of socialists, communists, and progressives in the 1940s and 1950s created a rich, diverse world where ordinary men and women felt their lives connected to a larger human project. Now back in print after its initial publication in 1977 and with a new introduction by the author, The Romance of American Communism is a landmark work of new journalism, profiling American Communist Party members and fellow travelers as they joined the Party, lived within its orbit, and left in disillusionment and disappointment as Stalin’s crimes became public. From the immigrant Jewish enclaves of the Bronx and Brooklyn and the docks of Puget Sound to the mining towns of Kentucky and the suburbs of Cleveland, over a million Americans found a sense of belonging and an expanded sense of self through collective struggle. They also found social isolation, blacklisting, imprisonment, and shattered hopes. This is their story--an indisputably American story.
