Book excerpt: There is today a dramatic reexamination of structure, authority, dogma -- indeed, every aspect of the life of the Church is held up to scrutiny. Welcoming this as a sign of vitality, Avery Dulles has carefully studied the writings of contemporary Protestant and Catholic ecclesiologists and sifted out six major approaches, or "models," through which the Church's character can be understood: as Institution, Mystical Communion, Sacrament, Herald, Servant, and, in a recent addition to the book, as Community of Disciples. A balanced theology, he concludes, must incorporate the major affirmations of each. "The method of models or types," observes Cardinal Dulles, "can have great value in helping people to get beyond the limitations of their own particular outlook and to enter into fruitful conversation with others... Such conversation is obviously essential if ecumenism is to get beyond its present impasses." This new edition includes a new Appendix and Preface by the author.

Book Understanding Four Views on the Lord s Supper

Download or read book Understanding Four Views on the Lord s Supper written by Zondervan, and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-05-26 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lord's Supper has been the central and characteristic action of the church at worship. But there are still many ways of understanding it and many questions surrounding this meal... Who should participate in the Lord’s Supper? How frequently should we observe it? What does this meal mean? What happens when we eat the bread and drink from the cup? What do Christians disagree about and what do they hold in common? These and other questions are explored in this volume of the fair-minded, informative Counterpoints series. Contributors make a case for one of the following views: Baptist view (memorialism) Reformed view (spiritual presence) Lutheran view (consubstantiation) Roman Catholic view (transubstantiation) All contributors use Scripture to present their views, and each responds to the others' essays. Included are resources for understanding the topic further, such as: A listing of statements on the Lord's Supper from creeds and confessions Quotations from noted Christians A resource listing of books on the Lord's Supper Discussion questions for each chapter to facilitate small group and classroom use The Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What kind of Church arises from the Lord's table?" "Doctrine, customs, culture, and history divide the Churches. Christians do not share a common table. Can a divided and injured Church celebrate the Eucharist, the sacrament of Christian communion?" "These are a few of the questions addressed in this study of the ecclesiology of communion. The "borderless" Church of the infinite love of Christ exists today. The divided Churches need only receive the communion of God as their innermost nature - at the borderless table of God's kingdom."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book The Lord s Supper as the Sign and Meal of the New Covenant

Download or read book The Lord s Supper as the Sign and Meal of the New Covenant written by Guy Prentiss Waters and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2019-01-17 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, 'This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.'" —1 Corinthians 11:24 The Lord's Supper is more than a church tradition or a complex doctrinal controversy—it has practical importance to our daily lives. When Jesus instituted the Supper, it was meant to strengthen the faith of his followers by reminding them of his promises. God has always made promises to his people through covenants, and along with them given signs and meals to point to and confirm his blessings. Looking at the unity of the covenants throughout the Bible, this book will help Christians recover the practical importance of the Lord's Supper as both a sign and a meal of the new covenant blessings God has bestowed on believers in Christ.

This book was released on 2018-07-20 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THIS SINGLE-PERSPECTIVE, ONENESS THEOLOGICAL Argument was written for the sole purpose of providing understanding, clarity, revelation, doctrine, instruction, as well as correction to all individuals-the Believer and non-Believer alike, with regard to an extremely misunderstood and notoriously mis-taught and irreverently practiced subject matter-Holy Communion. The purpose for using such direct wording lies in the fact that numerous individuals have, unfortunately, become victims of Christian denominations that adhere to a form of godliness, denying the power thereof...teaching false doctrine, causing these victimized "Christians" to deny the sound Biblical principle of Holy Communion altogether! Now, in achieving this main objective, I have chosen to utilize an in-depth approach of the Word of God. In short, I have provided numerous Scripture texts to aid towards complete understanding, clarity, as well as revelation of this highly misunderstood and misapplied Biblical subject matter. I would like to submit the following thesis statement as the Major Premise or Central Assertion of this theological thesis: The Biblical viewpoint and religious practice of Oneness Christianity today (with regard to Holy Communion) is to be viewed as a Divinely-instituted Ordinance that ought to be reverently adhered to by all individuals who call themselves a Oneness Apostolic-Pentecostal Christian. The Minor Premise or General Presupposition, then, rests solely upon the following Claim: Despite the current practice within Oneness, Holy Communion is to include both Foot Washing and The Lord's Supper (which is the bread and "wine" [i.e., grape juice]), by performing Foot Washing first! In short, I will provide sound Biblical Evidence that both Foot Washing and The Lord's Supper represent the Biblical constituents of Holy Communion! Now, with this said, please allow me to state (for the record) that the current viewpoint and practice of the Church (including Orthodoxy Christianity; albeit, it's not part of the Church of the Living God), then, may be said to be laden with numerous Scriptural inconsistencies. In other words, in doing my own Biblical study and research, I have encountered much error being taught within numerous Christian denominations as being Biblical. With this said, contrary to standard expository writing guidelines, it is my professional opinion that this has occurred due to a lack of Biblical understanding, faulty Biblical research, spiritual blindness and deafness, improper application of hermeneutics and exegesis, as well as being guilty of not having a proper walk with God (c.f., Ephesians 3:17). This, unfortunately, has caused non-Biblical doctrinal teaching and religious practice, which has led to false doctrine, again, with regard to Holy Communion. Now, I make such frank statements, because what is presented to you within this Single-perspective, Oneness Theological Argument, not only offers the most complete explanation of Biblical Communion, but it provides the best Biblical Evidence as to why this Theological Argument is the most persuasive Oneness Christian Doctrinal viewpoint-it presents the most solid Biblical, contextual, hermeneutical, exegetical, and historical presentation! As you read through this Single-perspective, Oneness Theological Argument, I ask that you momentarily suspend your doctrinal viewpoint, background, and/or denominal tradition, then sincerely pray-seeking after The Wisdom and Counsel of God-asking God to unveil His truth, and to provide complete understanding (including clarity and conviction, if needed) of this profound subject matter. But, most importantly, to reveal the spiritual significance of Holy Communion as being a sound Biblical Ordinance for the Church today, as clearly described and outlined within John 6:41-58 & 13:1-30 (including, I Corinthians 11:23-32).

Book God s Church for God s World

Download or read book God s Church for God s World written by Robert S. Heaney and published by Church Publishing. This book was released on 2020 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: - For all interested in the future of mission in the Anglican Communion - Authors and perspectives encompass the breadth of the world-wide Anglican Church In an era where partnership and communion seem to be under threat, this book re-imagines mis-sion partnership in a diverse and pluralist world. The theme of the Lambeth Conference 2020 is "God's Church for God's World," and this vol-ume serves as a theological resource for the conference and for those interested in the future of the Anglican Communion. Building on the work of the Center for Anglican Communion Studies (VTS) and the Mission Department of the Anglican Communion Office, the book identifies and addresses key theological, cultural, and practical issues that need to be addressed for mission partnerships to thrive. Key among these issues is listening: listening to one another is a profound challenge given socio-economic differences, power differentials, and linguistic divides. Drawing from mission experience, the authors offer best practices for discipleship as listening. Written across cultural differences, the authors hail from Zambia, the United Kingdom, Haiti, India, Latin America, Native American, South Africa, Turkey, the United States, and Lebanon. Each chapter invites readers to explore issues in their context through hearing scripture, hearing each other, and hearing the Spirit.

Book excerpt: The central document of the Second Vatican Council, Lumen Gentium was promulgated by Pope Paul VI on November 21, 1964. This document is "the keystone" of the Councils whole Magisterium. It focuses on the whole Church as a communion of charity. With it, according to John Paul II, the Second Vatican Council wished to shed light on the Churchs reality: a wonderful but complex reality consisting of human and divine elements, visible and invisible.
