Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Common-School System of Germany and Its Lessons to America The German common schools have long been celebrated for their efficiency and thoroughness. They have steadily improved from the time of their organization until the present, and although other nations have also improved their school systems, Germany, it is conceded, still continues in the lead. The three most important lessons, Tm taught the world by Germany are: 1, that all mpg? Teachers must be professionally trained and lessons from therefore have a professional standing; 2, that Germ' they must receive permanent appointments; and 3, that children of lawful school age must attend school every day of the year that it is in session, the parents being held accountable for such attendance. Book excerpt: The object of this book is twofold: first, to give an accurate picture of the German school system, especially that of Prussia, which was foremost in establishing a school system thorough in all respects; and second, to draw lessons from the same which can be applied in the American schools and for the improvement of her school systems. In order to obtain reliable information concerning the German schools it became necessary to examine a vast literature, as there is no single book in German giving a complete picture of the school system, and this would still leave many questions unsettled to the foreign student. Therefore it became necessary to study the subject on the ground where answers and explanations could be obtained from school officials and teachers. This study began twelve years ago, and four of these years have been spent in Germany. Access to the public libraries, and also to the private libraries of school men, together with the advice and assistance of many eminent teachers, have been of utmost value to me in securing correct data and in reaching absolute facts. Not less important was the actual inspection of schools, and this has been made in all parts of Germany; institutions of all kinds have been visited, from the school in the lonely village, where perhaps a single teacher instructs a hundred children, to the most complete school system of the largest city, and from the common school to the gymnasium and university. Uniform courtesy has ever been shown, and the school officials and teachers have never failed to give me an opportunity not only to see actual work, but also to obtain correct information concerning the schools. In regard to the second motive, that of suggesting reforms in the American schools, I trust no one will think that I believe in bodily transporting the German school system to American soil. There are certain reforms needed, and the sooner we recognize the fact and set about their introduction, the better for our schools and for the cause of education. We should be ready to learn from any and every source; and if Germany has anything good that we can apply, prejudice should not prevent its application. That Germany has some good things entirely applicable to our conditions, I believe these pages will show. The object is not to improve the German schools, therefore their defects-and they have serious defects-will not be given prominence....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The System in German Schools We often hear or read of the German School System, but we must use this term advisedly and not to understand that the schools of the German Empire are under one head or authority. There are twenty - six States in the German Empire, including the free cities of Hamburg, Bremen, and Luebeck, each of which has its own system and is in no way connected officially with any other State. In fact, edu cation ln the German Empire, as in our own country, is left entirely to the individual States, yet the schools throughout the Empire are very much alike and similar in quality. There are several reasons for this. In the first place the courses in the Hoehere Schulen (secondary and College Education), are governed by the requirements of the Universities which are practically the same for the twenty-three Universities of the German Empire. The Classmal Gymnasium was the principal school until in the year 1900 when the King of Prus sia issued a decree admitting the graduates from the Reform Schools to the Universities on equal terms with those of the old Gymnasium. Since that time the growth of the Re fonm Schools, in which there is less emphasis put upon Latin and Greek or in which these subjects are made elective, has been very rapid. There is no question that the best teach ing, the most enthusiastic teachers, and the best equipment are found in the Reform Schools. There is likewise no question that the growth in these schools will increase in the future. The teachers of the Classical Schools fight the Reform Schools and insist that there is an effort made by the teachers in them to Almericanize the German Schools. In spite of this opposition, as in our own land, the people are turning more and more to these schools and are neglecting the study of the Ancient Classics. This number, however, in thinly settled hamlets, was reduced, so that in some instances we find but one class in a school. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Common School Education: An Outline Sketch My aim has been to bring the facts adduced to focus upon the history of common school work in America. For this reason more space than usual has been assigned to England and less to Germany, for although most of the current educational philosophy had its origin in the latter country, it is chiefly in the former that the earlier history of the American schools is to be traced. What is calculated to occasion more uneasiness, to those who entertain no Spartan predilections, is the enunciation of the school doctrines of Boston, by the heads of the Toronto University. It is, by no means, a pleasing duty to have to animadvert on the lan guage made use of by the President and Chancellor of that institution. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Schools in the United States Compared With Those in Europe These undoubted facts must be blotted out from the history of the past, before the enemies of the Catholic Church can make good their accusation, that she is opposed to the educa tion, of the people. The allegation that Catholics in this country are not favorable to the system of Common Schools, as here adopted, does not at all sustain the charge; for our opposition to the system does not grow out of any disposition to check or stifle the education of the many, which we' are inclined, on the contrary, to promote by every means in our power, but it is founded on other reasons altogether different. It is because we conscientiously believe that our present Com mon School system is grievously defective and faulty; and that, whether intentionally or not, it infringes our religious liberties, guarantied to us by the Constitution, for the securing of which, the blood of our fathers flowed as freely as did that of those who would fain force upon us their own crude and illiberal ideas of education. Minorities have rights as well as majorities; and when minorities have reason and truth on their side, they have even stronger and more valid rights. Book Our Common School System Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Common School System In a city famous for its schools, a discussion sprang up concerning methods of education. Among other suggestions, one writer says: - "If the question of salary were left to a vote of the people, the pedagogues, instead of getting more, would be obliged to be satisfied with less. To be plain, they are made of the very same materials as laborers, and do not require any more to sustain life; nor are they a whit more deserving; nor should they get a cent more for their time or services. And as to the female teachers, it would be hard to make most people believe that they should receive for their services and time so much more than their equally-deserving and hard-worked sisters, the tailoress and work-girls of the various workshops and factories in our midst, who are obliged to work, and diligently, too, from early morn till night, for about one-half what the schoolteachers get for only four or five hours. Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
