Book Digenetic Trematodes

  • Author : Rafael Toledo
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2014-06-05
  • ISBN : 1493909150
  • Pages : 480 pages

Download or read book Digenetic Trematodes written by Rafael Toledo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digenetic trematodes constitute a major helminth group that parasitize humans and animals, and are a major cause of morbidity and mortality. The diseases caused by trematodes have been neglected for years, especially as compared with other parasitic diseases. However, the geographical limits and the populations at risk are currently expanding and changing in relation to factors such as growing international markets, improved transportation systems, and demographic changes. This has led to a growing international interest in trematode infections, although factors such as the difficulties entailed in the diagnosis, the complexity of human and agricultural practices, the lack of assessments of the economic costs or the limited number of effective drugs are preventing the development of control measures of these diseases in humans and livestock. In-depth studies are needed to clarify the current epidemiology of these helminth infections and to identify new and specific targets for both effective diagnosis and treatments. The main goal of this book is to present the major trematodes and their corresponding diseases in the framework of modern parasitology, considering matters such as the application of novel techniques and analysis of data in the context of host-parasite interactions and to show applications of new techniques and concepts for the studies on digenetic trematodes. This is an ideal book for parasitologists, microbiologists, zoologists, immunologists, professional of public health workers, clinicians and graduate and post-graduate students.

Book Tumors and Tumor Like Lesions of the Hepatobiliary Tract

Download or read book Tumors and Tumor Like Lesions of the Hepatobiliary Tract written by Arthur Zimmermann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers all liver tumors and lesions that clinically and radiologically mimic liver tumors. It provides readers with a comprehensive overview of this complex and rapidly evolving field. All aspects of surgical pathology are addressed, supplemented by detailed presentations of the lesions’ cell-biologic and molecular features. In addition, the methods employed for diagnosis and diagnostic algorithms are discussed. It appeals to pathologists and hepatologists and serves as an invaluable aid to diagnosis. The field of liver tumors and tumor-like lesions in adults and children has experienced tremendous advances in recent years. Specifically, the recognition of novel entities, deepened insights into known tumors, and refinement of classifications have necessitated continual updates and reappraisals. In addition, previous understanding of hepatic carcinogenesis and tumor progression has been transformed by the very rapid evolution of our understanding of cell biology, genomics, signaling pathways, cell interactions, and mechanisms of invasion and spread of hepatic tumor cells. These general pathology issues must be combined with surgical pathology if a comprehensive understanding of liver tumor pathology is to be achieved.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A state-of-the-art review of what is currently known about the epidemiology of cardiovascular diseases in elderly people and the possibilities for prevention. Noting that little attention has been given to the problem of cardiovascular diseases in this age group, the report aims to highlight opportunities for prevention while also underscoring the medical social and economic implications of increased longevity and the corresponding increase in the prevalence of cardiovascular disease. Both population-based approaches to prevention and strategies for reaching high-risk individuals are considered. Areas where knowledge is weak and research is urgently needed are also indicated. The report has six main sections. The first on demographic trends summarizes key characteristics of the elderly population in various parts of the world discusses the current and projected size of the elderly population and describes changes in life expectancy over the past four years. A profile of cardiovascular diseases in the elderly is provided in the second section, which includes information on the global burden of cardiovascular diseases trends in mortality rates and possible explanations, the most important cardiovascular diseases affecting the elderly, and eight principal risk factors. The third and most extensive section reviews health policy options for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases in elderly people and discusses their relative cost-effectiveness. Emphasis is placed on lifestyle approaches and on the medical management of risk factors. The remaining sections discuss opportunities for rehabilitation and establish guidelines for the development of health policies aimed at the prevention of cardiovascular disease in the elderly.
