Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Commercial Forest Trees of Massachusetts, How You May Know Them This handbook has been planned and published by the State Forester in order to have a practical working description of the commercial trees at the command of Massachusetts citizens. Technical terms necessarily used in botanical and forestry books are bewildering to the practical, everyday lumberman, farmer or average person. The attempt, therefore, of this treatise is to point out clearly how one can tell the commercially valuable trees of Massachusetts in a plain and untechnical manner. The really most important points or characters the tree has, which distinguish it from all others, are first pointed out. This will be all many persons may care to know. If five needles growing in a cluster always denote a white pine, for example, and people have their attention called to it, few will ever mistake that tree for others. They can settle the matter easily by examining the tree for themselves. Likewise, other trees can be told by following the same plan of identification. Book Some Additional Notes Upon Trees and Tree Planting in Massachusetts Classic Reprint

Download or read book Some Additional Notes Upon Trees and Tree Planting in Massachusetts Classic Reprint written by Charles Sprague Sargent and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-27 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Additional Notes Upon Trees and Tree Planting in Massachusetts There is certainly no proof yet, and perhaps no very strong indication even, that any foreign tree, with the excep tion only of the willow, ' yet introduced into Massachusetts, has qualities not possessed in a greater degree by some'na tive tree, which would recommend its general cultivation in economic forest planting, although it is, of course, too soon yet to pronounce with perfect confidence upon all the for sign trees introduced into our plantations. Individual ia tercet, which has cultivated here foreign trees, and especially European trees, often upon a large scale, has made it possi ble to determine at least that many trees, largely cultivated in Europe in economic forests, and in, a1nerica in orna mental plantations, are utterly unsuited to our climate. Too much praise can hardly be given to the men who have been patiently testing here for years the merits of foreign trees. Book American Forest Trees Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Forest Trees Classic Reprint written by Henry H. Gibson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Forest Trees The commercial timbers of this country are divided into two classes, hardwoods and softwoods. The division is for convenience, and is sanctioned by custom, but it is not based on the actual hardness and softness of the different woods. The division has, however, a scientific basis founded on the mechanical structures of the two classes of woods, and there is little disagreement among either those who use forest products or manufacture them, or those who investigate the actual structure of the woods themselves, as to which belong in the hardwood and which in the softwood class. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trees and How to Know Them: A Manual With Analytical and Dichotomous Keys of the Principal Forest Trees of the South The practical study of trees for many years, together with an effort to instruct others, has led me to prepare the keys offered in this book; they have grown from a few pencil notes relative to the trees in the University grounds and vicinity to a more com prehensive tabulation of the principal forest trees of the Southern States. All the trees of this territory are not included, because an exhaustive list would make the keys so cumbersome as to threaten their practical use. On the other hand they include 'many trees that are not indigenous to the territory. It was thought well to do this because the importation of foreign va rieties for ornamental uses has made desirable a knowledge of their relationship.
