Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Commercial Apple Industry of North America In collecting material for this work, the authors have visited practically every important apple-growing county in the United States; first in connection with a special investigation of the cost of producing apples in important regions, conducted by the Office of Farm Management, United States Department of Agriculture; and later as Fruit Crop Specialists engaged in organizing a system for estimating important fruit crops and particularly the commercial apple crop of the United States. The authors were impressed with a need of this kind of book, as the many published works on the apple have not dealt systematically with the commercial phase of apple-growing which only recently has become a well defined industry entirely separate from the home orchard. The whole subject of propagation has been omitted, as this is now well treated in separate books. The apple is approached in this book from the point of view of commerce. In the preparation of this work, credit is due to Roy E. Marshall and Fred R. Motz of the Virginia Station for aid in the chapter on pruning; to Prof. W. H. Chandler of Ithaca, New York, for his advice and suggestions; to E. H. Siegler and W. V. Cruess, and to many others both in the Federal Department of Agriculture and the various state schools of agriculture and experiment stations. Book Cider Hard and Sweet History Traditions and Making Your Own Second Edition

Download or read book Cider Hard and Sweet History Traditions and Making Your Own Second Edition written by Ben Watson and published by The Countryman Press. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fully updated and expanded primer for anyone who wants to make cider and for those who just like to drink it. With the rise in consumer demand for local foods and local food products, and the emergence of more small craft food and beverage producers since this book was originally published in 2000, this revised edition of Cider, Hard and Sweet comes at the right time. Watson's expanded the section on the history of cider to chronicle lesser-known cider producers such as those in Spain and Asia; broadened the selection of North American cider varieties and European cider apple varieties; provided new cidermaking basics tailored to beginner and intermediate cidermakers with special attention to the new cidermaking equipment available; added new recipes for cooking with cider from notable chefs and bartenders; and added a new chapter about the recent popularity of perry (pear cider) available for purchase today.

Book Cider Hard and Sweet History Traditions and Making Your Own Third Edition

Download or read book Cider Hard and Sweet History Traditions and Making Your Own Third Edition written by Ben Watson and published by The Countryman Press. This book was released on 2013-09-02 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this richly informative and entertaining book, Ben Watson explores the cultural and historical roots of cider. He introduces us to its different styles—draft, farmhouse, French, New England, and sparkling—and also covers other apple products, like apple wine, apple juice, cider vinegar, and Calvados. Cider is the new thing in today’s drinking world, even though it’s been around for centuries. In spite of its long and colorful history, cider has remained relatively underappreciated by the American public. The purchase in 2012 of a Vermont-based cidermaker for over $300 million signaled that this is all likely to change very soon. Richly informative and entertaining, Cider, Hard and Sweet is your go-to source for everything related to apples, cider, and ciderm aking. It includes great information on apple varieties, cidermaking basics, barrel fermentation, and recipes for cooking with cider—with instructions for making boiled cider and cider jelly, and recipes for dishes with cider braises and marinades. It also teaches readers how to recognize a good cider and takes you from buying store-bought to making the genuine article at home.

Book Trends and Current Characteristics in the United States Apple Market Classic Reprint

Download or read book Trends and Current Characteristics in the United States Apple Market Classic Reprint written by William H. Drew and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trends and Current Characteristics in the United States Apple Market This study is concerned with the structure and operation of the market for fresh and processed apples in the United States. Although studies relative to the marketing of apples in specific regions have been made, there is a noticeable absence of industry-wide studies. Some possible explanations for this situation are: (1) Industry and political pressures have forced a major portion of marketing research funds to be applied to studies of those agricultural products which are most important from the standpoint of volume of gross sales. (2) The complexities of vari ous grades and packages for products such as apples make it difficult to obtain accurate data. (3) Since major production areas are widely scattered across the country, a single industry-wide study is rather diffi cult to promote and to carry on. The ultimate objectives of this study are to: Develop a model depict ing the demand relationships for fresh and processed apples in the United States, and to compute, through linear programming techniques, a least cost pattern of interregional shipments of fresh apples in the United States under various sets of initial conditions. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Crops and Markets, Vol. 10: Issued Weekly by the Bureau of Agricultural Economics, United States Department of Agriculture, Washington, D. C.; March 9, 1925 American growers Were told that the English apple crop grown during 1924 was the shortest in years. Added to this, the growing season was one of the most unfavorable in the history of the country. In the apple districts of Holland, Switzerland, Northern Italy, czecho-slovakia, Roumania and jugo-slavia, however, the crop was the heaviest and the best that they had ever had. The competition of the crop in these countries is not given adequate valuation by our American apple industry. It represents a tremendous volume and has certain lines that represent a much higher class commercial output than is seen in the English crop. Tyrolian shippers put a package on the market that is second only to Pacific Northwestern boxes. It reaches all European markets. In German and Scandinavian markets these apples are seen in much greater velame than are American apples. Book Apple Growing in California Classic Reprint

Download or read book Apple Growing in California Classic Reprint written by Frank Wisdom Allen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apple Growing in California With the large crop of 1926 in practically all sections, prices received for California apples were extremely low. However, the eight-year averages of total value, when compared with comparable figures of other deciduous fruits during the same period, show the value of California's apple crop to have been approximately three times that of either cherries or shipping plums, three times the almond crop, about one million and a half dollars in excess of the pear crop, and almost as great as that of apricot crop. In 1920 and 1921 rather extensive new plantings were made in Sonoma, Butte, San Bernardino, Kern, and Inyo counties. During the past five years new plantings have not been so extensive except in Sonoma and Tuolumne counties. The total number of non-bearing trees for the state now shows a slight decline, while the bearing acreage shows a gradual and consistent increase. With the exception of 1923, a heavy crop year, production has been relatively uniform. Yields on the Whole are dependable, not being so seriously affected by frosts and drought as are the orchards of the eastern states.
