Excerpt: ...entrails all hung down, His heart's recess and that foul sack lay bare, Where what we eat as excrement is thrown. And while on him with fixed eyes I stare, He looked at me, and with his hands his breast Oped wide, and said, "See how myself I tear; See how Mahomet maimed is manifest. Before me Ali goes and wails aloud, Sharp cloven from the chin to forelock's crest, And all the rest of whom thou see'st the crowd Were sources in their lifetime of offence And schism; therefore mangled are they bowed. A devil stands behind, of cunning fence, Who with sharp blows and stroke of sharpest sword Tortures each soul of all this pack immense: When we have travelled o'er that road abhorred, Because our wounds are closed again, each one, Ere pass before him any of our horde. But who art thou who from the crag look'st on, Seeking perchance thy torment to delay Which is adjudged thee for thy ill deeds done?" "Not dead is he, nor guilt leads him this way," My Master said, "that he should tortured be; But that he may experience full assay, I, who am dead, must lead by Heaven's decree, And guide him through all Hell from round to round; And this is true just as I tell it thee." 24 The horrible description seems in parts an echo of Lucan ix. 773. I have euphemised the over-bold plainness of the original. 31 The standpoint from which Dante looks on Mahomet, not as the founder of a new religion, but as the author of a schism, like that of the Novatianists or the Donatists, is singularly characteristic of mediaeval thought. In the form of punishment he seems to have haa in his mind the literal meaning of the word. The author of division is himself divided. The special form of Ali's doom, ...

This book was released on 2017-01-24 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Commedia and Canzoniere of Dante Alighieri, Vol. 1 of 2: A New Translation, With Notes Essays and a Biographical Introduction I heard from time to time that others were anticipating me. Versions of the whole or part of the. Commedia in triple rhyme appeared, and met with at least a partial acceptance, by Rev. James Ford (i E. R. Elleby C. Tomlinson (i877), Warburton Pike J. R. Sibbald J. T. Minchin Of these I know little or nothing beyond the fact that I have, within the last few month, transcribed from them, as from all other English versions to which I could gain access, the rendering of the dread inscription of H. 1 - 9. But did I know more, it would, I feel, he at once unbecom ing and unwise to express any opinion on their merits. There can, I believe, he no worse introduction to a translator's work than that he should sit in udgment on the labours of his predecessors. It may be easy to point to this faulty rhyme and that obscure construction, to meanings imperfectly apprehended and special beauties turned into commonplace mediocrities, but then there comes the thought, common alike to Horace and St. Paul, Mutato mine, do is falmla narratur, Thou that judgest doest the same things. I have no doubt that each of these versions has, like my own, its special merits and defects. I hope and believe that each of the translators has found in his work, as I have found in mine, its own best reward. Each, perhaps, has had the added comfort of a small select circle of sym pathising friends. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt: ... clear light: s And he who sees me, nor with love doth burn, Of love shall never have clear-visioned sight: For nothing was denied to my delight, "When Nature begged me of him as her due, Who wills, dear ladies, me to join with you. w Each star that shines within mine eye doth rain Showers of its light, and of its potency: My beauties to the world as new remain, Because from Heaven's high clime they come to me; Nor can men ever know them perfectly, is Save by the knowledge of a man in whom Love dwells, with joy all others to illume." These words are read as written in the eye Of a bright angel, seen with beauty rife, BALLATA IX. The reappearance of "pargoletta" in line i leads to the conclusion that she who speaks, manifesting what she is without speaking, is neither the living nor the transfigured Beatrice, but the Philosophy whom, in the Convito stage of his inner life, he had admitted to a co-ordinate share in his affections, not without the risk of its becoming predominant. So taken, Philosophy boasts, as in Cvnv. ii. 16, of her heavenly origin. To that heaven she will return to Rive a fresh joy to its inhabitants. The poet then transfers to her what he had written of old of Beatrice herself. To assume, with Fraticelli, that the "far/o/ttta " is Beatrice, seems to meat varinnce with Purg. xxxi. 50, as interpreting the successive stages of Dante's inner life, to say nothing of the fact that the term could hardly be applied to one who, like Beatrice, was a "donna." 11 Each planet had its own special influence presided over its own special study in the Trivium and Quadrivium(Conr. ii. 14). All were found combined in Philosophy, as the Queen of Sciences. To understand their preciousness required the...
