Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coming War Germany beaten in the field will not be Germany permanently crippled, though she may for some years to come be Germany at a great disadvantage, and also, it should be remembered, a Germany avid to overcome her disadvantages. Germany beaten may quite well be Germany transformed, with Kaiserism banished, and a New Germany built up on the ruins of the old. What will happen then Will the Germany-that-is-to-be, that arises from the ashes of war, lie down and acquiesce in a diminished trade, a falling revenue and crippled resources There is only one possible answer Never l The will to live, the absolute necessity of regaining lost trade and lost capital; of re covering lost prestige in Science and the Arts the impossibility of neglecting the resources she has, and of abandoning what has been successfully begun, will drive Germany to work again with redoubled vigour. Her canals, her railways, her rivers, her harbours will still be there so will her immense resources in coal, so far exceeding ours so also will German perseverance and thoroughness. Nor must it be forgotten that her population was insufficient before the war for her needs in labour. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: There are two ways of looking at the war: one as a journalist, the other as a theologian. The journalist tells you what happens; the theologian not only why it happens, but also what matters. If we look at this war through the eyes of a journalist or a commentator, it will he only a succession of events without any remote causes in the past, or any great purpose in the future. But if we look at the war through the eyes of God, then the war is not meaningless, though we may not presently understand its details. It may very well be a purposeful purging of the world’s evil that the world may have a rebirth of freedom under His Holy Law, for: Every human path leads on to God, He holds a myriad finer threads than gold, And strong as holy wishes, drawing us With delicate tension upward to Himself. Our approach is from the divine point of view, first of all, because it is the only explanation which fits the facts; secondly because the American people who have been confused by catchwords and slogans are seeking an inspiration for a total surrender of their great potentialities for sacrifice, both for God and country. The great mass of the American people are frankly dissatisfied with the ephemeral and superficial commentaries on what is happening. Being endowed with intelligence, they want to know why it is happening. We all know what we are fighting against; we want to know what we are fighting for. We all know that we are in a war; we want to know what we must do to make a lasting peace. We know whom we hate; but we want to know what we ought to love. We know we are fighting against a barbarism that is intrinsically wicked; we want to know what we have to do to make the resurrection of that wickedness impossible.

And these forecasts of the mili tary critics might stand now as histories of the great war. So it is possible to speak with some authority con cerning the character of that next war, especially since so many able Europeans have already recorded and analyzed the experiences and lessons of the first world war. Though we cannot do more than guess at the participants, we can foresee the methods of that struggle and its direct and indirect results on the lives and property, the souls and bodies, of the nations who find themselves involved. Book The War Outside My Window

Download or read book The War Outside My Window written by Janet Elizabeth Croon and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2018-06-01 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable account of the collapse of the Old South and the final years of a young boy’s privileged but afflicted life. LeRoy Wiley Gresham was born in 1847 to an affluent slave-holding family in Macon, Georgia. After a horrific leg injury left him an invalid, the educated, inquisitive, perceptive, and exceptionally witty twelve-year-old began keeping a diary in 1860—just as secession and the Civil War began tearing the country and his world apart. He continued to write even as his health deteriorated until both the war and his life ended in 1865. His unique manuscript of the demise of the Old South is published here for the first time in The War Outside My Window. LeRoy read books, devoured newspapers and magazines, listened to gossip, and discussed and debated important social and military issues with his parents and others. He wrote daily for five years, putting pen to paper with a vim and tongue-in-cheek vigor that impresses even now, more than 150 years later. His practical, philosophical, and occasionally Twain-like hilarious observations cover politics and the secession movement, the long and increasingly destructive Civil War, family pets, a wide variety of hobbies and interests, and what life was like at the center of a socially prominent wealthy family in the important Confederate manufacturing center of Macon. The young scribe often voiced concern about the family’s pair of plantations outside town, and recorded his interactions and relationships with servants as he pondered the fate of human bondage and his family’s declining fortunes. Unbeknownst to LeRoy, he was chronicling his own slow and painful descent toward death in tandem with the demise of the Southern Confederacy. He recorded—often in horrific detail—an increasingly painful and debilitating disease that robbed him of his childhood. The teenager’s declining health is a consistent thread coursing through his fascinating journals. “I feel more discouraged [and] less hopeful about getting well than I ever did before,” he wrote on March 17, 1863. “I am weaker and more helpless than I ever was.” Morphine and a score of other “remedies” did little to ease his suffering. Abscesses developed; nagging coughs and pain consumed him. Alternating between bouts of euphoria and despondency, he often wrote, “Saw off my leg.” The War Outside My Window, edited and annotated by Janet Croon with helpful footnotes and a detailed family biographical chart, captures the spirit and the character of a young privileged white teenager witnessing the demise of his world even as his own body slowly failed him. Just as Anne Frank has come down to us as the adolescent voice of World War II, LeRoy Gresham will now be remembered as the young voice of the Civil War South. Winner, 2018, The Douglas Southall Freeman Award

Book Polly Sees the World at War Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Polly Sees the World at War IT was a warm Spring day in late April, a sun shiny, comforting hopeful sort of day that half apologized for its sister days of wind and rain and promised the real beginning of Spring. In the city the people on the sidewalks hummed little snatches of song to themselves as they went about their work and remembered all the pleasant things that they had ever wanted to do. - Old plans long put away as impossible were brought out and eagerly reconsidered, for in the Spring every thing is possible. The sparrows Spluttered and splashed in the mud-puddles, and the dogs barked and chased them, frisky and joyous in spite of their repeated failures to catch them. All the world loves Spring, for it is the time of year when the spirit of adventure is strongest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Neglected Aspects of War The cause of Universal Peace, upon which so much of the world's attention has been fixed this summer by the Hague Conference, can progress surely to success only upon the same conditions by which any other movement for good reaches its goal. It will not be advanced, but retarded, by neglecting diligently and calmly to consider facts, to look them straight in the face; to see things as they are, and not merely as one would wish to see them now, or as it is possible that our descendants may be privileged to see in a future happier age. Among many perversions of thought and resultant exaggerations of statement, by the unconditional advocates of Arbitration, there is one which underlies all others.
