Book Plautus and the English Renaissance of Comedy

Download or read book Plautus and the English Renaissance of Comedy written by Richard F. Hardin and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifteenth-century discovery of Plautus’s lost comedies brought him, for the first time since antiquity, the status of a major author both on stage and page. It also led to a reinvention of comedy and to new thinking about its art and potential. This book aims to define the unique contribution of Plautus, detached from his fellow Roman dramatist Terence, and seen in the context of that European revival, first as it took shape on the Continent. The heart of the book, with special focus on English comedy ca. 1560 to 1640, analyzes elements of Plautine technique during the period, as differentiated from native and Terentian, considering such points of comparison as dialogue, asides, metadrama, observation scenes, characterization, and atmosphere. This is the first book to cover this ground, raising such questions as: How did comedy rather suddenly progress from the interludes and brief plays of the early sixteenth century to longer, more complex plays? What did “Plautus” mean to playwrights and readers of the time? Plays by Shakespeare, Jonson, and Middleton are foregrounded, but many other comedies provide illustration and support.

Book The Comedies of Plautus Vol 2 of 2

Download or read book The Comedies of Plautus Vol 2 of 2 written by Henry Thomas Riley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Comedies of Plautus, Vol. 2 of 2: Literally Translated Into English Prose, With Notes, Containing the Amphitryon, Rudens, Mercator, Cistellaria, Truculentus, Persa, Casina, P nulus, Epidicus, Mostellaria, and Fragments In the Translation of the Plays contained in the present volume, the text of Fleckeisen has been adopted for the Amphitryon and the Rudens, and that of Weise (as given in the Tauchnitz Edition) for the others. In the supposed interpolations of the Amphitryon and Mercator, Schmieder has been followed. The previous English translations of the author are few in number. A part of the Menaechmi (translated, it is supposed, by William Warner) was published in 1595; to which reference will be found at page 372 of Vol. I. In the latter part of the seventeenth century Echard translated the Amphitryon, Rudens, and Epidicus. Thornton remarks that "his style is coarse and indelicate; when he aims at being familiar, he is commonly low and vulgar." In 1747, Cooke, the Translator of Terence, published a version of the Amphitryon, which Thornton speaks of as apparently intended merely for the use of learners." Of Thornton's translation of Plautus as a poetical work, it is impossible to speak in other than terms of admiration; but from the circumstance of its being in blank verse, it is not sufficiently close to convey to the English reader an accurate idea of the peculiar style of the author. A professed translation of seven of the Comedies of Plautus was published by the Rev. G. S. Cotter in 1827, but in it he avowedly omits a large portion of the text, and a still larger portion without the least intimation. In the present translation, particular attention has been given to the difficult and obscure passages, and it may not be presumptuous to hope that the Notes will be found of value to the classical student. It is hardly necessary to remind the Reader that the asterisks in the text denote where portions of the original are lost. Book excerpt: "This is a book worthy of high praise... All versions are exceedingly witty and versatile, in verse that ripples from one's lips, pulling all the punches of Plautus, the knockabout king of farce, and proving that the more polished Terence can be just as funny. Accuracy to the original has been thoroughly respected, but look at the humour in rendering Diphilius' play called Synapothnescontes as Three's a Shroud... Students in schools and colleges will benefit from short introductions to each play, to Roman stage conventions, to different types of Greek and Roman comedy, and there is a note on staging, with a diagram illustrating a typical Roman stage and further diagrams of the basic set for each play. The translators have paid more attention to stage directions than is usually given in translations, because they aim to show how these plays worked.
