Excerpt: ...The effect of varying densities, or specific gravities, in gases, is also remarkable on the point of time. Mr. Kelland observes, that the rapidity of mixing is dependant on the relative densities of the gases. Dr. Dalton found "the mobility of gases to be inversely as their densities." Dr. Reid proves, that gases of different densities do not mingle rapidly.-jThe experiments of Professor Graham also prove how influential is the difference of density in aiding or retarding diffusion, and he even comes to the conclusion, that "the specific gravity of gases can be determined by experiment, on the principle of diffusion, with greater accuracy than by ordinary means." "Tho rapidity of mixing is dependant on the relative densities of the gases, and appears, from Mr. Graham's experiments, to be such that the mass which a gas A, in any small time, communicates to the gas 13, is to the mass B which it receives, as tho square root of tho density of A to the square root of the density of B."--Problem 89. t "Fill a jar half full of oxygen, and then cautiously fill it up with carbonic acid. Then remove the cork and introduce a suspended candle. It burns brilliantly in the upper stratum of oxygen, but is extinguished in the carbonic acid below, being kindled again, as it is again drawn upwards into the oxygen. Hence gases of different densities do not mingle rapidly with each other, at least, to any great extent. But, if the oxygen and carbonic acid be left together for a considerable time, they gradually diffuse themselves through each other, part of the heavy carbonic acid rising, while a portion of the lighter oxygen descends."--Elements of Chemistry, by Dr. D. D. Reid, p. 602. I find, also, a satisfactory...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Combustion of Coal and the Prevention of Smoke, Chemically and Practically Considered Being much interested in the improvement of steam vessels, from my connection with several steam navigation companies, and having had a longer and more extended experience in the details of their building and equipping than, perhaps, any indi vidual director of a steam company in the kingdom, my atten tion has been uninterruptedly given to the subject since the year 1823, when I first established a steam company, and undertook to have the first steam-vessel constructed capable of maintaining a commercial intercourse across the Irish Channel, during the winter months, and which, till then, had been con sidered impracticable. Excerpt: ...of flues was 5 feet deep, the second 4 feet, and the third 3 feet; the numerous vertical water-ways, though but 4 inches wide, had an aggregate of no less than 12 feet deep. No adequate or separate space, however, was provided for the downward current of the great quantity of water that must, momentarily, have been required to supply so many ascending currents; the consequence was, that the ascending steam had to struggle against the descending current of the water, while the latter, in its way, was obstructed in reaching the plate-surface. Thus, the rapid generation of steam, and free access of the water to the plates, were both impeded in their respective functions. Another source of injury supposed to arise from the thickness of the plates, here merits attention. On this head Mr. Craddock, advocating the use of thin plates, but overlooking the question of circulation, and the character of the recipient of the heat, falls into the common error. "We know," he observes, "that boiler-plates of or j inch thick, are often heated very considerably, on their exterior, above the temperature of the water in the boiler. This is known to take place to such an extent, practically, as rapidly to deteriorate such parts of the boiler." How this extraordinary alleged fact has been ascertained does not appear. Yet, a dictum, so opposed to all experience, should have been supported by experiments or proof. Now, this supposed heating and deterioration of the plates, must either be a constant or an occasional effect. The former, we know it is not. The latter, therefore, must have been the result of some unusual and disturbing cause, but which he has not explained. It is this cause which has been overlooked, and which here demands...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Combustion of Coals and the Prevention of Smoke, Chemically and Practically Considered, Vol. 1 IT may be asked, why I should have undertaken to write a treatise on a branch Of chemistry; or why suppose I could say any thing on the subject of combustion which had not been better said already by many competent chemical professors. The reply to the latter question must be sought in the following pages. My reply to the former is the following short statement of facts, which, I trust, will exonerate me from presumption, on the one hand, or any uncalled for interference, on the other. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1840 edition. Excerpt: ...2252, --" All chemical action consists in the more intimate union of particles of matter previously brought into the nearest possible contact by mixture; or in the separation of those that may have previously been attached to each other." 2263, --" No chemical action can ensue where the materials are not brought into the nearest possible contact." Let us take the familiar instance of the comhustion of a number of grains of gunpowder. We place them together, in contact, and on approaching a body of the due temperature for ignition, combustion ensues; and the intervals of time occupied by the transmission of heat, from grain to grain, being inappreciable by our senses, the combustion has the effect of being simultaneous. But let us alter the arrangement or collocation of the several grains. Let them be placed consecutively in the nature of a train, so as to establish certain distances between them. Under this arrangement, combustion will no longer be simultaneous, and an appreciable interval will occur between the combustion of the several grains. Let us further suppose, that, at some part of the series, the distance between some of the grains was greater than mutual action or influence demanded. In that case we cannot doubt that the interruption created by such distances would stopthe continuousness of the combustion, and that the grains thus separated would escape combustion. This illustration, it is to be observed, is without reference to chemical action between the atoms or grains. Let us now apply it to the case before us. Let us suppose an atom of hydrogen gas and an atom of oxygen gas brought together, as in the annexed figure, or with that kind of contact which is denominated mechanical, in opposition to chemical, ...
