Book Asylum Doctor

Download or read book Asylum Doctor written by Charles S. Bryan and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography of an early twentieth-century South Carolina doctor sheds light on his pioneering work with the mentally ill to combat a public health scourge. Thousands of Americans died of pellagra before the cause—vitamin B3 deficiency—was identified. Credit for solving the mystery is usually given to Dr. Joseph Goldberger of the US Public Health Service. But in Asylum Doctor, Charles S. Bryan demonstrates that a coalition of American asylum superintendents, local health officials, and practicing physicians set the stage for Golberger’s historic work—chief among them was Dr. James Woods Babcock. As superintendent of the South Carolina State Hospital for the Insane from 1891 to 1914, Babcock sounded the alarm against pellagra. He brough out the first English-language treatise on the subject and organized the National Association for the Study of Pellagra. He did so in the face of troubled asylum governance which, coupled with Governor Cole Blease’s political intimidation and unblushing racism, eventually drove Babcock from his post. Asylum Doctor describes the plight of the mentally ill in South Carolina during an era when public asylums had devolved into convenient places to warehouse inconvenient people. It is the story of an idealistic humanitarian who faced conditions most people would find intolerable. And it is important social history for, as this book’s epigraph puts it, “in many ways the Old South died with the passing of pellagra.”

Book A History of Richland County

Download or read book A History of Richland County written by Edwin Luther Green and published by Genealogical Publishing Company. This book was released on 1974 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The centerpiece of this work is an exhaustive collection of will abstracts (pp. 207-361), compiled from wills in the Office of the Judge of Probate at Charleston, Camden, and Winnsboro (1747-1783) and from the Office of the Judge or Probate of Richland County (1785-1865). The wills extend beyond the dates specified in the ostensible coverage of the volume itself, which perhaps explains why a second volume was never produced. Information contained in the wills includes the names of the testators; names of heirs and their relation to the testator; bequests of real and personal property; dates of recording and probate; names of executors, witnesses, and appraisers; and exact citations to the original will books and page numbers.

Book Crossroads of a Continent

Download or read book Crossroads of a Continent written by Peter A. Hansen and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-20 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crossroads of a Continent: Missouri Railroads, 1851-1921 tells the story of the state's railroads and their vital role in American history. Missouri and St. Louis, its largest city, are strategically located within the American Heartland. On July 4, 1851, when the Pacific Railroad of Missouri began construction in St. Louis, the city took its first step to becoming a major hub for railroads. By the 1920s, the state was crisscrossed with railways reaching toward all points of the compass. Authors Peter A. Hansen, Don L. Hofsommer, and Carlos Arnaldo Schwantes explore the history of Missouri railroads through personal, absorbing tales of the cutthroat competition between cities and between railroads that meant the difference between prosperity and obscurity, the ambitions and dreams of visionaries Fred Harvey and Arthur Stilwell, and the country's excitement over the St. Louis World's Fair of 1904. Beautifully illustrated with over 100 color images of historical railway ephemera, Crossroads of a Continent is an engaging history of key American railroads and of Missouri's critical contribution to the American story.

Download or read book Relief Recreation Racism written by Robert A. Waller and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-12-28 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the literature dealing with the Civilian Conservation Corps, South Carolina does not figure prominently in most histories of the Great Depression story. That neglect should be corrected! It is important to recognize the ways in which racism has permeated our society, sometimes blatant and sometimes subtle. While the focus is South Carolina, the particulars are representative of what happened in CCC camps across the nation. As one of the most popular facets of President Franklin D. Roosevelts New Deal, the activities and antics of the CCC boys deserve attention. My primary purpose in writing this book is to assist teachers and librarians and their upper level elementary and high school students in understanding this crucial but understudied era in South Carolinas history. These readers and a more general South Carolina audience could identify with a nearby place or make a family connection.
