Book Killer Triggers

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joe Kenda
  • Publisher : Blackstone Publishing
  • Release : 2021-03-09
  • ISBN : 1982678372
  • Pages : 192 pages

Download or read book Killer Triggers written by Joe Kenda and published by Blackstone Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most common triggers for homicide are fear, rage, revenge, money, lust, and, more rarely, sheer madness. This isn’t an exact science, of course. Any given murder can have multiple triggers. Sex and revenge seem to be common partners in crime. Rage, money, and revenge make for a dangerous trifecta of triggers, as well. This book offers my memories of homicide cases that I investigated or oversaw. In each case, I examine the trigger that led to death. I chose this theme for the book because even though the why of a murder case may not be critical in an investigation, it can sometimes lead us to the killer. And even if we solve a case without knowing the trigger, the why still intrigues us, disrupting our dreams and lingering in our minds, perhaps because each of us fears the demons that lie within our own psyche—the triggers waiting to be pulled.

Book The Granite Attraction Stories of the Pikes Peak Highway and Summit

Download or read book The Granite Attraction Stories of the Pikes Peak Highway and Summit written by Eric Swab and published by . This book was released on 2021-06 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book begins in 1888, with the first efforts to get wheeled vehicles and their passengers to the summit of Pikes Peak. 15 years earlier, the U. S. Army established a weather station at the top of the mountain and manned it all year round with human observers. These two activities have resulted in the mountain being an attraction for visitors, innkeepers, skiers, hunters, and fishermen. Individuals and corporations have been motivated by the challenge of the highway to get their horseless carriages, automobiles, race cars, motorcycles, bicycles, basketballs, wheelbarrows, peanuts, and pianos to the top of the mountain. People have attempted to get rich by selling a piece of the mountain. The summit has been the site of experiments in meteorology, aircraft engine design, and human physiology. It has been the host of numerous proposals for sheltering those visitors and residents. Over the years five structures have been built for this purpose. There have been several struggles for control including an attempt to homestead the summit. It has been the source of tall tales, stories of hardship, and of failure. The book includes 13 maps and is illustrated with 123 images, most of them vintage photographs, many that have never been published before.

Book excerpt: In 1884, the distinguished German jurist Daniel Paul Schreber suffered the first of a series of mental collapses that would afflict him for the rest of his life. In his madness, the world was revealed to him as an enormous architecture of nerves, dominated by a predatory God. It became clear to Schreber that his personal crisis was implicated in what he called a "crisis in God's realm," one that had transformed the rest of humanity into a race of fantasms. There was only one remedy; as his doctor noted: Schreber "considered himself chosen to redeem the world, and to restore to it the lost state of Blessedness. This, however, he could only do by first being transformed from a man into a woman...."

Book The Drama of Trauma

  • Author : Tamara Winslow
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2021-05
  • ISBN : 9781737027935
  • Pages : 532 pages

Download or read book The Drama of Trauma written by Tamara Winslow and published by . This book was released on 2021-05 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE DRAMA OF TRAUMA: VOLUME ONE, is unique when measured against other slants on trauma. Instead of talking about the miseries that victims endure, Dr. Winslow offers hope and genuine help, to hurting souls revealing that there is triumph over trauma. Rather than getting stuck in dead-end ruts put forward by theories and empty therapies, THE DRAMA OF TRAUMA is pre-emptive. It cites John 14:27 as it's presuppositional truth. Jesus commanded His followers, "Let not your heart be troubled." Or it could be said, "Don't permit your heart to be traumatized." You don't have to be a lifelong victim. You can be healed and pre-emptive before trauma ever occurs. Forgotten truths, however, need to be revived and re-learned. What's more, this holistic collection of ideas uncovers an insidious, ancient, and incessant, onslaught of trauma shaking all levels of human life globally, shared and individually. Dr. Winslow, therefore, exposes an ancient, demonic strategy, staged like a theatrical drama in its acts, script, finale, and a cast that targets an expanding audience, while addressing trauma sufferers, therapists, families, doctors, ministers, soldiers, and abuse victims. At the same time she respects the breadth of Christian theology, denominations and spiritual views. But most of all, Dr. Winslow takes this puzzling topic and connects it's pieces into a practical layout that brings hope to the heartbroken. In her many years of experience, talking with, ministering to and praying with trauma sufferers she's seen many trauma victims healed, often instantaneously. For that reason, this message is timely: for such a time as this.

Book Where the Water Goes

  • Author : David Owen
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2017-04-11

  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book Where the Water Goes written by David Owen and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-04-11 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Wonderfully written…Mr. Owen writes about water, but in these polarized times the lessons he shares spill into other arenas. The world of water rights and wrongs along the Colorado River offers hope for other problems.” —Wall Street Journal An eye-opening account of where our water comes from and where it all goes. The Colorado River is an essential resource for a surprisingly large part of the United States, and every gallon that flows down it is owned or claimed by someone. David Owen traces all that water from the Colorado’s headwaters to its parched terminus, once a verdant wetland but now a million-acre desert. He takes readers on an adventure downriver, along a labyrinth of waterways, reservoirs, power plants, farms, fracking sites, ghost towns, and RV parks, to the spot near the U.S.–Mexico border where the river runs dry. Water problems in the western United States can seem tantalizingly easy to solve: just turn off the fountains at the Bellagio, stop selling hay to China, ban golf, cut down the almond trees, and kill all the lawyers. But a closer look reveals a vast man-made ecosystem that is far more complex and more interesting than the headlines let on. The story Owen tells in Where the Water Goes is crucial to our future: how a patchwork of engineering marvels, byzantine legal agreements, aging infrastructure, and neighborly cooperation enables life to flourish in the desert—and the disastrous consequences we face when any part of this tenuous system fails.
