Book Raphael at the Metropolitan

Download or read book Raphael at the Metropolitan written by Linda Wolk-Simon and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2006 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raphael has been the indispensable reference point for countless artists, great and small, Italian and non-Italian. His frescoes in the Vatican quickly asserted themselves as paradigms of the Grand Manner, while his serenely beautiful Madonnas and calmly dignified portraits redefined their respective genres. The combination of clarity and complexity in his compositions results in an ineffable quality of innate grace that many artists have since tried to emulate. Not only Parmigianino, Carracci, Poussin, Ingres, and Degas but Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Manet, and Picasso also mined Raphael's works for inspiration. The Colonna Altarpiece is the only altarpiece by Raphael in an American collection. Raphael painted this work in his early twenties for a convent of nuns in Perugia on the eve of his move to Florence. The two main panels of the altarpiece were bought by former Museum president J. Pierpont Morgan, and later given as a gift to the Museum's Collection in 1916. This volume accompanies an exhibition that reunites all seven parts of the altarpiece for the first time since the seventeenth century: the two main panels in the Metropolitan together with the five components of its predella, divided among the Metropolitan, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, and the National Gallery and the Dulwich Picture Gallery, both in London. Also included is a fine selection of paintings and drawings by Raphael executed during the same period, 1502-5 A.D. Additionally, this exhibition showcases a preliminary study, now in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, for the landscape in the Metropolitan's altarpiece, as well as the beautiful painting Madonna and Child with a Book from the Norton Simon Art Foundation in Pasadena. These works document one of the pivotal moments in Raphael's career, when the young artist abandoned Perugia, in Umbria, and set his sights on Florence, where he encountered the work of Fra Bartolommeo and Leonardo da Vinci. To contextualize the transformative effect of this move, paintings by his master, Perugino, as well as by Pinturicchio and Fra Bartolommeo are also exhibited. -- Metropolitan Museum of Art website.

Book Raphael and the Redefinition of Art in Renaissance Italy

Download or read book Raphael and the Redefinition of Art in Renaissance Italy written by Robert Williams and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-03 with total page 976 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raphael was one of the most important artists of the Italian Renaissance and one of the most important and influential in the entire history of art. His practice of 'synthetic' or 'critical' imitation became a model of creative method; his engagement with the principle of decorum revealed its deeper expressive and philosophical significance and the operation of his workshop helped to redefine the nature of the work that artists do. Robert Williams draws upon the history of literature, philosophy, and religion, as well as upon economic history, to support his detailed and illuminating accounts of Raphael's major works. His analyses serve as the foundation for a set of hypotheses about the aims and aspirations of Italian Renaissance art in general and the nature of art-historical inquiry.

This book was released on 2023-01-13 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raphael’s artworks, paintings, altarpieces, drawings, tapestries, cartoons, prints, ceramics and all other artifacts derived from his works, including copies and forgeries, have been the object of an often-frantic search from his death in 1520 onwards. France, Spain, Germany, England, and Italy were the main destinations for such artworks between the 16th and the 18th centuries, while the market spread overseas from the 19th century onwards. This book is the first full exploration of this phenomenon and of the mechanisms of transmission of Raphael’s artifax through inheritance, sales, swaps and shady transactions. It includes essays in English, French and Italian by some of the most knowledgeable scholars on Raphael, museum curators and experts in the history of collecting, and is a landmark in scholarship on Raphael and art collecting.

Download or read book Painting in Renaissance Perugia written by Sheri Francis Shaneyfelt and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-04-30 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers the first comprehensive study of painting in Renaissance Perugia from the late fifteenth to the mid- sixteenth centuries. Showcasing works by Perugino, Raphael, and Pintoricchio, as well as less familiar artists who worked in Perugia from ca. 1480–1540, Sheri Shaneyfelt traces the influence and impact of Perugino's workshop in central Italy over more than a half a century. She demonstrates why Perugia, which has been overlooked in modern scholarship, was such a vital center for the production of early modern Italian art. Shaneyfelt's study also shifts the focus away from the analysis of individual artistic creativity by highlighting the importance and significance of collaboration and workshop production in Renaissance Italy. Interweaving historical and archival evidence with analyses of numerous paintings and drawings, her book, richly illustrated with 115 color illustrations, offers many new insights into the vibrant artistic culture of early modern Perugia.

Download or read book Giorgio Vasari written by Patricia Lee Rubin and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vasari's Lives of the Painters, Sculptors, and Architects are and always have been central texts for the study of the Italian Renaissance. They can and should be read in many ways. Since their publication in the mid-sixteenth century, they have been a source of both information and pleasure. Their immediacy after more than four hundred years is a measure of Vasari's success. He wished the artists of his day, himself included, to be famous. He made the association of artistry and genius, of renaissance and the arts so familiar that they now seem inevitable. In this book Patricia Rubin argues that both the inevitability and the immediacy should be questioned. To read Vasari without historical perspective results in a limited and distorted view of The Lives. Rubin shows that Vasari had distinct ideas about the nature of his task as a biographer, about the importance of interpretation, judgment, and example - about the historian's art. Vasari's principles and practices as a writer are examined here, as are their sources in Vasari's experiences as an artist.
